AbstractTo celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the Midland Institute of Otology (MIO) a. meeting was held in the Belfry Hotel, West Midlands, 19–21 September 1997. The meeting comprised an excellent academic conference, social events and a golf tournament. A report on the academic conference has been published (Stansbie and Pahor, 1997).The MIO has been established to further the cause of ENT in the Midlands and it has succeeded in its aim to a great extent. An historical overview of the Institute is of interest and would serve perhaps as a model for similar organizations, especially in the provinces. The Institute was the brainchild of William Stirk Adams. He remained the President from the conception of the Institute till his death. It is befitting to present a biography of such a dedicated personality.

In this reflective essay, written for the 50th anniversary of Management Learning, we look at the history of the journal from a unique vantage point, our interconnected, academic lived experience of publishing in the journal. Our aim is to undertake an historical review of our publications in Management Learning in order to identify the key themes of our work, to make connections with broader academic and social events of the time and to assert the continuing relevance of these themes for future scholarship. We review 27 papers that we have published in Management Learning since Volume 1 (1971) and identify four main themes from our papers. These are set in the context of the development of critical management education. We highlight the broader dimensions to our themes and suggest two areas with implications for future scholarship in Management Learning. In our conclusion, we use our findings and reflections to identify what we have learned about management learning, as well as making a call for action in relation to what we are labelling historical reflexivity.

The Local Arrangment Committee (LAC) welcomes attendees to Portland and has put together several social events for the Microscopy & Microanalysis '99 meeting that we hope registrants and their families will enjoy. A list of those events and other happenings in the greater Portland area can be obtained on our web page at: http:// www.ohsu.edu/core. Briefly, for those of you arriving on Saturday and who would like the opportunity to have a taste of the region's award-winning lagers, porters, and stouts that evening, there will be a brew bus tour of several of the local pubs. On Sunday morning, for the golf enthusiast, we are sponsoring the annual golf tournament at the spectacular Skamania Lodge in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. The course is located right off the Columbia River, in Washington, not far from Portland.

The publication discusses the security issues of mass events in the ancient era, the legal basis for the organization of such ventures in ancient Rome. It also shows the calendar of mass events in the Roman Empire, the issues of the order of occupying seats in the audience and the problem of the responsibility of the originators of social events, as well as the sources of financing. The next part presents the current state of safety of mass events and shows the tragedies in stadiums that led to the current state of prevention systems.

Comic strips can be used as a style of visualization on a human–computer interface because they can represent a wide variety of affairs with contexts or time series. This paper describes two systems for sharing personal context as comic strips: ComicDiary and Comic-FOAF-Viewer. Both the systems depict personal experiences or profiles including personal relationships in their comic strips and hyperlinks among related comics based on other characters in the story. ComicDiary allegorizes individual episodes that happen during touring exhibitions by creating a comic from a user's touring records accumulated from personal guidance systems and environmental facts, e.g., social events. For example, a ComicDiary might show a user's personal diary during a Japanese academic conference. The comic describes where the conference was held, the most interesting presentations, what happened, and so on. Exhibitions are places visited by people of all generations. Comic representation of a personal diary with amiable expressions fits such places. The comic strip is automatically generated, composed of 12 frames, and shown as a diary. Users can view their diaries at information kiosks located at exhibition sites. Friend of a Friend (FOAF), which is an XML/RDF application for expressing personal information and relationships, has attracted attention from Web developers because its files can describe human-centered networks such as Social Network Service (SNS). Current FOAF visualization tools utilize graphs or tables; however, it is difficult to represent a variety of relations. Comic-FOAF-Viewer aims to represent the multifarious relations and personal information that FOAF has to offer for surfing interfaces in FOAF networks.
