Two new oxystominid species (Nematoda: Enoplida) from an abyssal plain in the southern Philippine Sea

Two new species of free-living marine nematodes, Litinium dispariseta sp. nov. and Wieseria minor sp. nov. are described from an abyssal plain with a water depth of 4117–5035 m near the Southern Kyushu-Palau Ridge in the tropical Western Pacific Ocean. Litinium dispariseta sp. nov. is characterized by having distinct inner labial setae two times longer than the outer labial setae, wrench-like amphideal foveas, a single preanal midventral supplementary seta and a short cylindrical tail with bluntly rounded tip. It differs from congeners by its distinctly long inner labial setae relative to the outer labial setae (two times longer vs shorter or equal in length) and peculiar wrench-like amphideal foveas (vs horseshoe shaped or ovoid with round to oval anterior aperture). Wieseria minor sp. nov. has a clavate tail, a character found only in the four congeners W. glandulosa (Kreis, 1929), W. longiseta (Allgén, 1947), W. clavata Gerlach, 1956 and W. inaequalis Gerlach, 1956. However, Wieseria minor sp. nov. differs from these congeners by its much smaller body size (1045 µm vs 2120–3125 µm) and oblong amphideal foveas with double contour (vs a single oblong or ovoid loop). An emended diagnosis for Wieseria and pictorial keys for Litinium and Wieseria are provided.

Two new species of deep-sea chrysogorgiid gorgonians are described from the tropical Western Pacific: Iridogorgia densispicula n. sp. from an unnamed seamount in the Caroline Plate with water depth of 1204 m and Iridogorgia squarrosa n. sp. from an unnamed seamount near the Mariana Trench with water depth of 1458 m. Iridogorgia densispicula n. sp. has a slender stem with bud-like polyps, dense sclerites in polyps and branches, spindle-like scales in polyp bases, and long rods in tentacles. Iridogorgia squarrosa n. sp. has a brown to nearly black axis, large polyps with eight obvious columns, elongated scales in the back of tentacles, and special scales at base of polyps with many sculptures. By the combination of these features, the two new species differ distinctly from each other and all other congeners. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that I. densispicula n. sp. is sister to all other Iridogorgia Verrill, 1883, while I. squarrosa n. sp. showed close relationship with I. splendens Watling, 2007.

Two new free-living marine nematodes of the family Oxystominidae are described from San Antonio Bay (Río Negro) and San José Gulf (Chubut). Litinium australis sp. n., is characterized by having a rounded tail, by the first and second crown of cephalic setae with different lengths, gubernaculum with apophysis and by the presence of at least four precloacal papillae; Thalassoalaimus nestori sp. n., is characterized by having a conical tail, cephalic setae equal in length, gubernaculum with rounded and dorso-caudally directed apophysis and two precloacal papillae. An emended diagnosis of the genus Thalassoalaimus and a key to species are given.

Two new species of free-living marine nematodes,Adoncholaimus daikokuensissp. nov. andA. pseudofervidussp. nov., from the coastal area of northern Japan, are described and illustrated.Adoncholaimus daikokuensissp. nov. is similar to five congeners,A. derjugini,A. punctatus,A. oxyuroides,A. squaluscomb. nov. andA. filicaudacomb. nov. in the absence of a gubernaculum, but differs in the absence of a ventral swelling on tail, spicule length and buccal cavity length.Adoncholaimus pseudofervidussp. nov. is similar toA. fervidusin having large body size, short tail, similar positions of the excretory pore and nerve ring, short spicules, arrangement of subventral setae in posterior region of body in males, and a single pair of terminal pores of the Demanian system surrounded by small gland cells in females.Adoncholaimus pseudofervidussp. nov. differs fromA. fervidusin having smaller, more anteriorly located amphids, longer buccal cavity, absence of gubernaculum in the male, and a different position of the terminal pores in the female. Two new species of marine nematodes, Paramphimonhystrella longispicula sp. n. in the deep-sea sediments from the Philippine Sea in the tropical Western Pacific Ocean with the water depth of 3920–5176 m and P. eurystoma sp. n. in the shelf seafloor from the East China Sea with the water depth of 55–64 m, are described. Both species possess long and slender spicules, which are present only in the congener P. barbula, a species discovered from the continental slope of New Zealand. Paramphimonhystrella longispicula sp. n. can be easily distinguished from P. barbula by the relatively broader buccal cavity, the unequally long cervical setae and a higher number of terminal setae. Paramphimonhystrella eurystoma sp. n. is unique in having a peculiar gubernaculum with two proximal capitula and a peculiar hammer-shaped cuticularized piece posterior to vulva, by which it can be distinguished from P. longispicula sp. n. and P. barbula as well as other congeners. Paramphimonhystrella longispicula sp. n. differs from P. eurystoma sp. n. also by the number of terminal setae (4 vs. 2). A dichotomous key to nine valid species of Paramphimonhystrella is provided.

Two new species of free-living marine nematodes, Daptonema longiapophysis sp. nov. and Cobbia sinica sp. nov. from the Yellow Sea, China are described and illustrated. Daptonema longiapophysis sp. nov. is characterized by spicules with a projection on the ventral and dorsal side respectively and the length of the gubernacular apophysis longer than the length of spicules. Cobbia sinica sp. nov. is characterized by one big dorsal tooth, long conico-cylindrical tail and gubernaculum with a small dorsal apophysis.

Two new species of free-living marine nematodes of the subfamily Enoplolaiminae are described from Río Negro and Chubut Provinces, Argentina. Enoplolaimus variispiculum sp. n. is characterized by having asymmetric spicules, different in size and distal tips. It is the only species with this characteristic in the whole genus. Mesacanthoides flagellatum sp. n. is characterized by mandibles texture, weakly cuticularized and mottled and mandibular plates with pronounced “v” shaped incision posterior to the anterior bar. Cephalic capsule wider than long with setae on posterior end, males with long spicules, complex gubernaculum and flagellate tail.
