In the beginning of July last, I obtained, from the Frith of Forth, a species of bream, which has not been mentioned by naturalists as inhabiting the British seas. A few days after, I procured, from the same quarter, a second specimen of the same species, each exhibiting a conspicuous dark violet-coloured spot at the base of the upper part of the pectoral fins. (See Plate VI.)On consulting the continental works on Ichthyology, I find this bream to agree best with the description Baron Cuvier has given of the Pagellus acarne, an inhabitant of the Mediterranean; but, as no figure of the fish accompanies his description, the discrimination of the species is rendered somewhat uncertain.

The author obtained, in the early part of last September, at Brixham, in Devonshire, seven specimens of a species of Gurnard, which has been known for thirty years past to the fishermen there under the name of Finned Captains. This he ascertained to be the Trigla lucerna of Brunner. The species is known as an inhabitant of the Mediterranean, where it was first noticed by Rondeletius, but mistaken by him for the T. cuculus of Linnæus. Since then, Brunner noticed it at Marseilles, Risso at Nice, Leach at Malta, and Cuvier at Naples; but it had not been previously observed by any naturalist on the British coasts. The largest specimen obtained by the author is 10½ inches long. The back is light red, the pectoral fins dark blue, the sides marked by a silvery band from the gill-cover to the tail; the lateral line smooth, and formed by numerous semicircular plates, beautifully radiated at their free margin ; the scales thin, large, and entire; the second ray of the first dorsal fin very long, so as to reach, when folded down, beyond the sixth ray of the second dorsal fin. A new species of gobiid, Hazeus ingressus sp. nov. (Teleostei: Gobiidae) is described from the Levantine coast of Turkey. The species probably originates from the Red Sea and represents the 11th alien gobiid species in the Mediterranean Sea. The new species is distinguished from its Indo-Pacific congeners by a combination of the following characters: no dark blotch on the first dorsal fin; caudal fin coloration; scales in lateral series 25-28 (modally 27); second dorsal fin rays I,8; anal fin rays I,8-9; predorsal scales ctenoid 7; short, stout gill rakers 2+8. This finding suggests that the Lessepsian invasion intensely continues with the inclusion of the known species as well as undescribed species.

During a study aiming at the evaluation of the distribution of the soft-bottom community at different taxonomic scales, thefamily Syllidae was analysed to the species level. Among the identified material, one undescribed species belonging to the genus Sphaerosyllis Claparède, 1863 was found and two species constitute new reports for the Mediterranean Sea and for the Iberian Peninsula: Parapionosyllis cf. macaronesiensis Brito, Núñez and San Martín, 2000, and Syllis cf. mauretanica (Licher, 1999) n. comb., both only previously known from the subtropical Eastern Atlantic Ocean. The new species of Sphaerosyllis is mainly distinguished in having bulbous, small antennae, tentacular and dorsal cirri, small parapodial glands, with granular material, and compound chaetae with short blades. In this paper, we describe the new species and the specimens of the new reports.

A new species of Cribraria, described herein as C. bicolor, appeared in moist chamber cultures on samples of the bark of Eucalyptus sp. collected at two localities in Australia. The morphology of representative specimens was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy, and micrographs of relevant morphological details of sporocarps and spores are provided. The species has a number of distinct and unique morphological features, including a glossy bright-violet globose sporotheca and a two-colored long stalk which is bright-red over the lower one-third and light yellow or lemon-yellow over the upper two-thirds. The combination of these characteristics as well as a shallow calyculus which is dark-violet when viewed under a dissecting microscope and bright red in transmitted light when mounted in lactophenol makes C. bicolor a well-defined morphospecies when compared to all other species of Cribraria. The stability of the taxonomic characters of the species was confirmed by an examination of a number of specimens.

Xylaria fusispora, an undescribed species of Xylaria (Xylariales, Xylariaceae), is described and illustrated as a new species based on collections from Guizhou Province, China. Both morphology and phylogenetic analysis of nrDNA ITS sequences support the establishment of this new species. The fungus is characterized by its fusoid-equilateral ascospores and an ascus apical ring not bluing in Melzer’s reagent. The differences between the new species and the related fungi are discussed.

Gaidropsarus mauli, new species, is described from the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal vent site (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) and from the Bay of Biscay. It is distinguished from congeners by a combination of characters such as the number of vertebrae, the size of the first dorsal-fin ray, the profile of the head and the shape of the snout, in dorsal view, the size and the position of the eyes, the length of the pelvic fins, the shape of the pectoral fins, and the length of the lateral line. A comparison with the other 13 valid species of the genus is presented.

A new species of characid, Hyphessobrycon hamatus, is described from the upper rio Tocantins, Goiás, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all other Hyphessobrycon species by the presence of bony hooks on dorsal, anal, pelvic, and pectoral fins of males, the two black humeral spots, the 4 or 5 teeth in the inner series of the premaxilla, a maxilla with 2-3 teeth, the iii-v, 16-18 anal-fin rays, and a lateral line with 10-32 perforated scales and 33-35 scales in a longitudinal series.

The Brazilian land planarians Cratera crioula, C. joia, Geoplana hina, and G. taxiarcha (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Geoplanidae) are revised taxonomically from type material and additional specimens. Geoplana hina sensu Carbayo et al. (2013) was found to be an undescribed species and therefore is described and named as Cratera picuia sp. n. A new species of the genus is also described and named as Cratera arucuia sp. n. G. hina and G. taxiarcha are transferred to Cratera. The most remarkable morphological feature of Cratera—a dilated terminal portion of the ejaculatory duct—is either absent, inconspicuous, or variable in C. hina, C. joia, C. picuia sp. n., and C. arucuia sp. n. Based on the monophyletic status of Cratera inferred elsewhere, an emendation of the genus is here proposed to encompass the morphological variation observed in the genus.
