A short history of nitrocellulose (NC) use in propellants is discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of NC as a semi-synthetic component of powders and rocket propellants are presented. Based on the conventional classification of propellants, the options of eliminating nitrocellulose in different types of powders and rocket propellants are discussed in detail. The analysis shows that in the foreseeable future, the elimination of NC in single-base and double-base propellants is highly unlikely. The observed trends in triple-base propellant development also does not show any tendencies in the elimination of NC, only the replacement of nitroguanidine with cyclic nitroamines. However, the elimination of NC in LOVA composite propellants is probable. Synthetic, rubber-based solid composite rocket propellants, with ammonium perchlorate as the oxidizer, are the only ones not dependent on NC.

This paper presents the results of a comparative investigation into the effects of the ignition method on the ballistic properties of three types of propellants: a single-base propellant, a double-base propellant and a low vulnerability (LOVA) propellant, as determined via closed vessel tests (CVT). Conventional gunpowder ignition and plasma jet ignition methods were used. The influence of the ignition method on the values of the propellant characteristics obtained in CVT was analysed. It was found that the method of ignition has an influence on the values of propellant characteristics, determined in CVT. An analysis of the experimental form functions showed that plasma ignition is not a solution to the problems inherent to the process of determining the ballistic properties of propellants in which the burning process deviates from the geometric burning law.

 Before this paper, the authors have obtained the tangent median relation by using the trigonometric function equation. In this paper, on the basis of the linear positioning solution of one-dimensional equidistant double-base linear array, by proper approximate treatment of the strict solution, and by using the direction finding solution of single base path difference, the sinusoidal median relation of azimuth angle at three stations of the linear array is obtained. By using the sinusoidal median relation, the arithmetic mean solution of azimuth angle at three stations is obtained. All these results reveal the intrinsic correlation between the azimuth angles of one-dimensional linear array.

Experimental and theoretical determination of water-jet velocity using high speed videography for disruptor application is reported in this paper. Water-jet disruptor extensively uses the water as a liquid projectile. It helps to destroy improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or explosive devices (EDs) by breaking detonating cord in the system, making it non-operational. The use of such system against suspected objects is a fashion that continues to be met tremendous achievement. Such a device is also known as explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) disruptor. It is used by bomb technicians or squad to make disable and/or neutralize at a safe distance. The primary purpose of an EOD disruptor is to remotely open or provide destruction to suspected objects. To “remotely open” is to open the suspect objects, exposing their contents. “Provide destruction” means penetrating, cutting, or removing the components of the fusing system in order to make them disable. A secondary purpose of a disruptor is to create a means of access (for example, through a window or door of vehicle or into a trunk). Double and single base propellants are used in the experimental trials for assessing water-jet velocities. An attempt has been made to validate the water-jet velocity using experimentally high speed videography for the first time and making its theoretical analysis by conducting the various trials at a laboratory with different propellants. The stand-off distance between disruptor and target is 0.5 m. This kind of research work is not reported in open access till the date. This is the newness of this research work. The experimental water-jet velocity for single base propellant varies from 349.63 to 503.56 m/s and for double base propellant it varies from 515.07 to 890 m/s. The theoretical water-jet velocity for single base and double base propellant works out to be as 616.44 m/s and 692.62 m/s respectively. From this research study, it is concluded that there is good agreement between theoretical and experimental results.

ABSTRACT Mutations that increase the activity of the promoter for the antirepressor gene of phage P22 were isolated by pseudoreversion of four severe promoter-down mutations. The sequence changes in these pseudorevertants include single base pair substitutions, single base pair deletions, tandem double base pair deletions and multisite mutations. The single base pair substitutions change nonconsensus base pairs to consensus base pairs at positions -14 and -8. The other mutations provide support for the idea that the length of the spacer region between the conserved -35 and -10 hexamers is an important determinant of promoter strength. Deletions of one or two base pairs in the spacer region apparently activate an alternate -10 hexamer by shifting it from a spacing of 19 base pairs to a spacing of 18 or 17 base pairs, respectively.
