A stable and high lubricant ultrathin film was fabricated by self-assembled procedure at room temperature. Thickness of the films was regularly increased with the layer-by-layer self-assembly process in which poly (acrylic acid)-ferric hydroxide (PAA-Fe(OH)3) sol as anion polyelectrolyte and photosensitive diazoresin (DR) as cationic polyelectrolyte. And the process which based on electrostatic attraction was verified by UV-vis measurement. Furthermore, the ionic bonds in the films converted to covalent bonds under UV irradiation. Finally, the surface morphology and microtribology of the films were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and friction force microscopy (FFM). The results indicate that the films are flat and uniform through the self-assembly technique and the surface friction coefficients maintain at a rather low value.

AbstractAmphiphilic diblock copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PMMA-b-PAA) was prepared by 1,1-diphenylethene (DPE) method. Firstly, free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate was carried out with AIBN as initiator in the presence of DPE, giving a DPE-containing PMMA precursor with controlled molecular weight. tert-Butyl acrylate (tBA) was then polymerized in the presence of the PMMA precursor, and PMMA-b-PtBA diblock copolymer with controlled molecular weight was prepared. Finally, amphiphilic diblock copolymer PMMA-b-PAA was obtained by hydrolysis of PMMA-b-PtBA. The formation of PMMA-b-PAA was confirmed by 1H NMR spectrum and gel permeation chromatography. Transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering were used to detect the self-assembly behavior of the amphiphilic diblock polymers in methanol.

The synthesis of a semicrystalline block copolymer comprising a hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) pure block and an amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)-r-poly(octadecyl acrylate) random block by nitroxide-mediated polymerization is reported.
