Chondrosarcomas represent approximately 20% of primary malignant bone cancers, being known as the most frequent neoplasia of the anterior thoracic wall. In our case, we present a case of a primary sternal chondrosarcoma in a 50-year-old female patient that has been polychemiotherapy and radiotherapy treated for breast cancer. Despite the initial treated malignancy of breast cancer in the personal pathologic history of the patient, it was discovered that the sternal tumor was not a metastatic disease from the breast neoplasm. After multiple investigations, the patient was successfully treated for the sternal chondrosarcoma after a radical sternal resection with a chest wall reconstruction completed with two titanium plates that were anchored on the ribs and with the placement of methyl methacrylate mesh.

This article is a continuation of a case study in which we presented the results of research on processes generated under fire conditions by mixing molten ammonium nitrate (AN) with selected polymers. Here, we present an analysis of how certain materials, which may frequently appear in farm buildings and are commonly used in the immediate vicinity of humans, can potentially form explosives. The chosen materials include polyamides (PA) from which the wear-resistant machine elements are made (e.g., high-performance gears, wheels of transport trolleys); polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used, i.e., in construction carpentry, electrical insulation, and hydraulic pipes; polystyrene (PS) used, i.e., in insulation and containers; and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), i.e., so-called organic glass and plexiglass. The research results showed that these seemingly harmless and safe materials, mixed with AN and heated under fire conditions, may turn into explosives and stimulate stored AN. This creates significant risks of an uncontrolled fire progress.

The copolymers of 2,3-Dichloropropene with vinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate, and styrene of different compositions were obtained via free-radical copolymerization. The copolymerization constants for the comonomers were found from the dependence of the copolymer composition on the initial mixture content. An increase in the content of 2,3-Dichloropropene in the initial mixture was found to decrease the yield and intrinsic viscosity of the copolymer for all systems. The reactivity of 2,3-Dichloropropene in copolymerization reactions was assessed according to the reciprocals of the copolymerization constants of vinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate, and styrene, which indicate the reactivity of the dichlorinated monomer when interacting with comonomer radicals. It was found that 2,3-dichloropropene is the most active in the reaction with a styrene radical. However, its reactivity with a methyl methacrylate radical decreases by a factor of 0.88 as compared to the styrene radical. The lowest reactivity of 2,3-Dichloropropene is observed when interacting with a vinyl chloride radical. The synthesized copolymers can be further modified by replacing chlorine atoms with functional groups.

Nanoscale particles ZnS:Nd3+, CdS:Nd3+ and (Zn,Cd)S:Nd3+ were synthesized and doped in a polymerizing methyl methacrylate medium during the production of optically transparent polyacrylate composites of the composition PMMA/ZnS:Nd3+, PMMA/CdS:Nd3+ and PMMA/(Zn,Cd)S:Nd3+. The excitation of photoluminescence (FL) and FL of semiconductor structures in composites is associated with the transition of electrons from the valence band to the conduction band and to the levels of structural defects of semiconductor particles, followed by recombination at these levels. Based on changes in the excitation spectra of FL and FL composites, assumptions are made about the structure of particles, the distribution of Nd3+ ions in it and their effect on photoluminescence.
