The exponential traffic growth of wireless communication networks gives rise to both the insufficient network capacity and excessive carbon emissions. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can improve the spectrum efficiency (SE) together with the energy efficiency (EE) and has been regarded as a promising technique for the next generation wireless communication networks. Channel model reflects the propagation characteristics of signals in radio environments and is very essential for evaluating the performances of wireless communication systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the state of the art in channel models of massive MIMO. First, the antenna array configurations are presented and classified, which directly affect the channel models and system performance. Then, measurement results are given in order to reflect the main properties of massive MIMO channels. Based on these properties, the channel models of massive MIMO are studied with different antenna array configurations, which can be used for both theoretical analysis and practical evaluation.

A semiempirical multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model is proposed for high-speed railway (HSR) viaduct scenarios. The proposed MIMO model is based on the combination of realistic single-input single-output (SISO) channel measurement results and a theoretical geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM). Temporal fading characteristics involvingK-factor and Doppler power spectral density (PSD) are derived from the wideband measurement under an obstructed viaduct on Zhengzhou-Xi’an HSR in China. The GBSM composed of a one-ring model and an elliptical model is employed to describe the entire propagation environment. Environment-related parameters in the GBSM are determined by the measured temporal fading properties. And a close agreement is achieved between the model results and measured data. Finally, a deterministic simulation model is established to perform the analysis of the space-time correlation function, the space-Doppler PSD, and the channel capacity for the measured scenario. This model is more realistic and particularly beneficial for the performance evaluation of MIMO systems in HSR environments.

High-speed railway (HSR) wireless communications are required to ensure strict security. In this work, we study the secrecy performance of a nonorthogonal multiple access- (NOMA-) aided HSR wireless communication system in the case of an eavesdropping user. Specifically, applying NOMA technology to the HSR communication system can effectively improve the data rates. Therefore, we study the secrecy performance of the downlink NOMA system under the HSR wireless communication. In particular, the exact analytical results for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) based on no small-scale channel state information (CSI) are derived. We also provide all of the parameterizations for the proposed channel model. Finally, the correctness of theoretical derivation is verified via simulations. Results show the positive effect of utilizing the NOMA for enhancing wireless systems secrecy performance.

The rapid development of high-speed railway (HSR) and train-ground communications with high reliability, safety, and capacity promotes the evolution of railway dedicated mobile communication systems from Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway (GSM-R) to Long Term Evolution-Railway (LTE-R). The main challenges for LTE-R network planning are the rapidly time-varying channel and high mobility, because HSR lines consist of a variety of complex terrains, especially the composite scenarios where tunnels, cuttings, and viaducts are connected together within a short distance. Existing researches mainly focus on the path loss and delay spread for the individual HSR scenarios. In this paper, the broadband measurements are performed using a channel sounder at 950 MHz and 2150 MHz in a typical HSR composite scenario. Based on the measurements, the pivotal characteristics are analyzed for path loss exponent, power delay profile, and tap delay line model. Then, the deterministic channel model in which the 3D ray-tracing algorithm is applied in the composite scenario is presented and validated by the measurement data. Based on the ray-tracing simulations, statistical analysis of channel characteristics in delay and Doppler domain is carried out for the HSR composite scenario. The research results can be useful for radio interface design and optimization of LTE-R system.

With the rapid development of high-mobility wireless communication systems, e.g., high-speed train (HST) and metro wireless communication systems, more and more attention has been paid to the wireless communication technology in tunnel-like scenarios. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) nonstationary multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model with high-mobility wireless communication systems using leaky coaxial cable (LCX) inside a rectangular tunnel over the 1.8 GHz band. Taking into account single-bounce scattering under line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) propagations condition, the analytical expressions of the channel impulse response (CIR) and temporal correlation function (T-CF) are derived. In the proposed channel model, it is assumed that a large number of scatterers are randomly distributed on the sidewall of the tunnel and the roof of the tunnel. We analyze the impact of various model parameters, including LCX spacing, time separation, movement velocity of Rx, and K-factor, on the T-CF of the MIMO channel model. For HST, the results of some further studies on the maximum speed of 360 km/h are given. By comparing the T-CF between the dipole MIMO system and the LCX-MIMO system, we can see that the performance of the LCX-MIMO system is better than that of the dipole MIMO system.
