A computerized problem-solving task was employed to study the relationships among problem-solving behaviors and learning styles. College students made choices to find their way home in a simulated “lost in the woods” task and wrote their. reasons at each choice point. Time to read relevant information and time to make decisions were measured by the computer clock. These variables were correlated with learning style variables from Schmeck's (1977) questionnaire. The findings indicated that subjects who perceived themselves as competent learners take more time on the problem-solving task, use more information and make fewer wrong choices.

Hasta la fecha, se ha alcanzado una serie de logros en los estudios sobre la relación entre las estrategias de aprendizaje de idiomas y la competencia lingüística. Sin embargo, son limitados los estudios acerca de la relación entre el uso de estrategias de expresión oral y el rendimiento en exámenes de expresión oral en lengua inglesa, especialmente en un contexto chino. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo explorar dicha relación entre la aplicación de estrategias de expresión oral y el rendimiento en las pruebas de expresión oral de los exámenes IELTS, mejorando así el rendimiento en inglés oral mediante la elección y formación en la estrategia más adecuada en cada caso. 93 estudiantes chinos de postgrado que han realizado el examen IELTS durante su formación universitaria respondieron a un cuestionario sobre su uso de las estrategias de expresión oral, y los datos se analizaron con el software IBM SPSS Version 22, que aborda específicamente los análisis de correlación, regresión y ANOVA. Los principales resultados muestran lo siguiente: (1) El uso general de las estrategias de expresión oral se encuentra en un rango de frecuencia media, y la estrategia de expresión oral más usada es la compensación, mientras que la menos utilizada es la cognitiva. (2) El rendimiento en la prueba de expresión oral de los exámenes IELTS está positivamente correlacionado con el uso de los seis tipos de estrategias de expresión oral.

This study examined the effect of crowded versus uncrowded conditions upon pulse and self-rated arousal, and upon verbal production performance in subjects' first and second languages. Participants were 52 francophone college students. Arousal estimates were identical for crowded and noncrowded conditions as was verbal performance, thereby contradicting the theories of Zajonc (1965) and Freedman and Perlick (1979) in which crowding is viewed as an activating and intensifying stimulus. Crowding itself appears to have no direct effect on arousal or behaviour as measured.

The purpose of this study was to test the perceived effects of psychological skills training (PST) on anxiety and anaerobic performance in college-aged students. Fifty-five college students (44 females, 11 males) volunteered to complete an online survey instrument. Participants were recruited via convenience sampling methods to answer questions built through a Qualtrics online survey. The questionnaire was split into two sections. The first section asked participants to identify psychological skills, their familiarity with them, and their frequency of use. The second section consisted of categorizing each skill so participants could mark the extent to which it influences their training goal. Data analysis showed males were more familiar with five out of six psychological skills when compared to females. This is result is likely due to males showing higher stress levels during training and performance compared to females. The findings of this study confirm the importance of mental health education and PST in college students.

This chapter provides an overview of wellness theories, along with a profile of the challenges facing music students today, and a brief background of performing arts medicine. The multidimensional nature of wellness is introduced as the basis for the explorations that follow in this book. The top impediments to academic performance faced by college students are identified and grounded in national surveys and research. Some of these challenges include stress, anxiety, sleep deprivation, and depression. A discussion specific to music students points to additional challenges, such as performance-related musculoskeletal injuries, isolation, competition, and performance anxiety. The toolkit at the end of the chapter provides eight assessments for each dimension of wellness.

36 college students participated in a study designed to determine the effect of induced changes in arousal on olfactory sensitivity. Each subject's sensitivity was measured under conditions of low, moderate, and high arousal. The results showed that sensitivity was significantly decreased under both low and high arousal but not under moderate arousal. No difference between the conditions of low and high arousal was found. The results are discussed in terms of the inverted-U shaped function between arousal and performance.
