Abstract Holographic display is the only technology that can offer true 3D with all the required depth cues. Holographic head-worn displays (HWD) can provide continuous depth planes with the correct stereoscopic disparity for a comfortable 3D experience. Existing HWD approaches have small field-of-view (FOV) and small exit pupil size, which are limited by the spatial light modulator (SLM). Conventional holographic HWDs are limited to about 20° × 11° FOV using a 4 K SLM panel and have fixed FOV. We present a new optical architecture that can overcome those limitations and substantially extend the FOV supported by the SLM. Our architecture, which does not contain any moving parts, automatically follows the gaze of the viewer’s pupil. Moreover, it mimics human vision by providing varying resolution across the FOV resulting in better utilization of the available space-bandwidth product of the SLM. We propose a system that can provide 28° × 28° instantaneous FOV within an extended FOV (the field of view that is covered by steering the instantaneous FOV in space) of 60° × 40° using a 4 K SLM, effectively providing a total enhancement of > 3 × in instantaneous FOV area, > 10 × in extended FOV area and the space-bandwidth product. We demonstrated 20° × 20° instantaneous FOV and 40° × 20° extended FOV in the experiments.

AbstractWe present the results of the analysis of a movie taken over a small field of view in the intermediate corona at a spatial resolution of 0.5“, a temporal resolution of 1 s and a spectral passband of 7 nm. These CCD observations were made at the prime focus of the 3.6 m aperture CFHT telescope during the 1991 total solar eclipse.

Rapidly developing augmented reality, solid-state light detection and ranging (LIDAR), and holographic display technologies require spatial light modulators (SLMs) with high resolution and viewing angle to satisfy increasing customer demands. Performance of currently available SLMs is limited by their large pixel sizes on the order of several micrometers. Here, we propose a concept of tunable dielectric metasurfaces modulated by liquid crystal, which can provide abrupt phase change, thus enabling pixel-size miniaturization. We present a metasurface-based transmissive SLM, configured to generate active beam steering with >35% efficiency and a large beam deflection angle of 11°. The high resolution and steering angle obtained provide opportunities to develop the next generation of LIDAR and display technologies.

The air-to-ground missile with strapdown seeker may have the problems, including small field of view(FOV), limited overload, and fall angle constraint. To solve the above mentioned problem, a phased guidance scheme is proposed. In this scheme, the attack trajectory is divided into the following six stages, including glided stage, fall angle constraint stage, target acquisition and adjustment stage, terminal guidance stage and blind zone stage. The glided stage is designed to increase range, the terminal fall angle is attained ahead of time at fall angle constraint stage. The aim of target acquisition and adjustment stage is to adjust the missile attitude, so that the target will fall within the FOV of the seeker. It creates good condition to capture the target for strapdown seeker. In the terminal stage, the guidance law of proportional navigation and attitude track are used to fit the needs of FOV constraint and attack accuracy. The simulation result shows that the project trajectory can solve the application of attacking moving targets for air-to-ground missile with strapdown seeker under multi constraints.
