In recent years, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been intensively studied as an effective adsorbent for the removal of pollutants from wastewater. One of the main problems for its use corresponds to the agglomeration of the CNTs due to the interactions between them, which prevents using their entire surface area. In this study, we test the effect of dispersion of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the removal of heavy metals from acidic solutions. For this, polyurethane filters were dyed with a well-dispersed oxidized MWCNTs solution using chemical and mechanical dispersion methods. Filters were used in column experiments, and the sorption capacity increased more than six times (600%) compared to experiments with suspended MWCNTs. Further, kinetic experiments showed a faster saturation on MWCNTs in column experiments. These results contribute to a better understanding of the effect of dispersion on the use of CNTs as heavy metal ions adsorbent.

This work studies the adsorption of heavy metal ions (Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI)) in aqueous solutions on amino-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-NH2) in the ppb concentration range (50-3000 �g/l) as a function of contact time, initial concentration of heavy metal ions and the presence of four inorganic electrolyte anions (Cl-, SO42-, NO3-, PO43-). The adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution was studied using different kinetic models. The results showed that the adsorption process is best fitted with the pseudo-second-order model indicating that the process is controlled by chemisorptions through electrostatic attraction and chemical interaction/complexation between the metal ions and the surface functional groups of MWCNTs-NH2. The intra-particle diffusion model showed that diffusion is slow, but did not govern the rate of the overall adsorption process. The effects of Cl-, SO42-, NO3- and PO43- anions on the adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) are variable (improvement, reduction, no impact).

Kinetic study on the removal of zinc(II), copper(II), lead(II) and cadmium(II) from the aqueous solutions using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was carried out to examine the temperature effect on the adsorption of zinc(II), copper(II), lead(II) and cadmium(II) as well as to explore the potentiality of using carbon nanotubes as a promising adsorbent for environmental remediation. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were characterized by BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), FE-SEM (Field emission scanning electron microscopy), and DPASV (differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry). Adsorption experiments were carried out and comparisons with the previous work were made. Experimental results showed that the multi-walled carbon nanotubes can successfully remove zinc(II), copper(II), lead(II) and cadmium(II) from aqueous solutions. Increasing solution temperature can significantly improve the removal efficiency because of the endothermic nature of adsorption process. The kinetics of zinc(II), copper(II), lead(II) and cadmium(II) adsorption on multi-walled carbon nanotubes were analyzed, and the calculation results showed that the heavy metal ions adsorption is a pseudo-second-order process, and its capacity increases with increasing solution temperature. The binding of the metal ions by the multi-walled carbon nanotubes was evaluated from the adsorption capacities and found in the following order: copper(II) > lead(II) > zinc(II) > cadmium(II). Finally, multi-walled carbon nanotubes demonstrated that they are a promising adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions.
