Abstract An ion exchange method to determine the alkalinity of water-soluble tea ash containing high levels of manganese is described. A chromatographic column containing a strong cation exchange resin (20–50 mesh) in Na+ form, with a bed volume of 5 mL is used. The present ion exchange method is compared to pH titrations and also to the official AOAC methods (31.012, 31.015, 31.016). Results with the new method are accurate and precise.

Abstract An ion exchange procedure for Ephedrine Sulfate Sirup NF, based on the ability of ephedrine to be retained on a polystyrene sulfonate cation exchange resin column, was studied collaboratively by eight laboratories. The compound is held on the column by a positive charge located in the cationic center of the molecule, it is then eluted with hydrochloric acid, and its ultraviolet absorption is measured. The addition of 57.88 mg ephedrine sulfate to Ephedrine Sulfate Sirup NF resulted in recoveries of 58.39 and 57.72 mg, or 101 and 100%, respectively. Recoveries for collaborative samples, each containing 19.22 and 19.33 mg/5 ml, were 99.8 ± 1.83 and 101 ± 4.09%, respectively.

Sn-containing hydrotalcite-like compounds were prepared by three different methods such as (i) direct synthesis, (ii) ion-exchange and (iii) grafting. These catalysts were proved to have framework Sn species by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and UV-vis spectroscopy. The catalysts prepared by three methods were found to be active and selective for the liquid phase Baeyer–Villiger (BV) oxidation of admantonone using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidant and acetonitrile as a solvent. The Sn-hydrotalcite-like catalysts prepared by ion-exchange method exhibited better catalytic performance than the catalysts prepared by other two methods. Among the ion-exchanged hydrotalacite-like catalysts, 3% Sn ion-exchanged hydrotalcite exhibited superior activity at 30% conversion and 100% selectivity.

In this study, high-purity Li2CO3 was prepared by carbonation-decomposition and ion-exchange methods using the industrial-grade lithium carbonate, and the effect of cycles and ion-exchange of the mother liquor on purification was investigated. Results showed that the process of cycles can improve the purity and productivity of Li2CO3. The impurities (such as K, Na, Ca and Mg) could be removed in the process. The purity of product decreased and the impurity contents increased after 4 cycles. At the same time, the ion-exchange process by D412 resin was used to deeply remove the residual Ca and Mg after the simple carbonation-decomposition and cycle process. The comparison of different flowing speed of solution through the ion-exchange resin indicated that the low flowing speed was beneficial for the deep removal of the Ca and Mg. considering the problem of efficiency, the flowing speed of 10-20 ml/min was appropriate. The high purity and productivity of Li2CO3 indicated that the carbonation-decomposition method combining with the mother liquor cycles and ion-exchange method has a good perspective in the field of lithium carbonate purification.

Abstract Phenylpropanolamine is retained on a sulfonated polystyrene cation exchange resin by the positive charge located in the cationic center of the molecule. Phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride is eluted from the column with 0.27N HCl and determined by UV absorption. Duplicate recoveries were 101 and 101%. The method is recommended for collaborative study.
