The first dodecanuclear [MII6LnIII6] clusters with a ‘Star of David’ metal topology have been synthesized with a variety of different divalent 3d-metal ions and lanthanides, and exhibited single-molecule magnetism and magnetic refrigeration.

Two [MIII2DyIII2] complexes (M = Fe for 1 and Co for 2) with mixed organic ligands were obtained. Complex 2 exhibits single molecule magnet behavior with Ueff = 64.0(9) K.

A family LnIII4 clusters were successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. Magnetic studies show that Gd4 cluster displays magnetic refrigeration, while Dy4 cluster demonstrates two distinct slow magnetic relaxation processes.

The unusual ferromagnetically coupled compound was prepared by the use of Me3SiN3 with the metal ions being exclusively bridged by end-on N3−. Th cationic molecule is a rare example of a 3d-metal cluster exhibiting a “Janus”-faced SMM behavior for the dried and wet forms.

The syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of giant molecular 3d and 3d/4f paramagnetic metal clusters are surveyed. Such complexes combine fascinating crystal structures, interesting magnetic properties and sizes comparable to those of classical magnetic nanoparticles providing a powerful bottom-up approach to nanoscale magnetic materials.

ABSTRACTIn order to realize the magnetic refrigeration system, it is necessary to develop a 100 W class refrigerator with COP > 7.5. This requires us to find new magnetic refrigerant materials, of which cooling capacity is 2.5 times higher than that of Gd. In this paper, first we discuss the cooling capacity of magnetic refrigerant materials to achieve COP = 7.5. Then, we compare the experimental results of MnAsSb, MnFe(PGe) and La(FeCoSi)13 compounds with the calculated cooling capacity. It is suggested that a composite layer material of MnFe(PGe) would show excellent cooling capacity in the temperature span of 20 K.
