Magnetite formation of serpentinized ultramafic rocks leads to variations in the magnetic properties of serpentinites; however, magnetite precipitation is still on debate.

In this work, we analyzed 60 cores of ultramafic rocks with a variety of serpentinization degrees. These rocks belong to the ultramafic-mafic San Juan de Otates complex in Guanajuato, Mexico. Geochemical studies have been previously conducted, enabling us to compare changes in the magnetic properties against the chemical variations generated by the serpentinization process. By studying the density and magnetic properties such as anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility, hysteresis curves as well as magnetic and temperature-dependent susceptibility and, we were able to identify the relationship between magnetic content and serpentinization degree, the predominant magnetic carrier, and to what extent the magnetite grain size depends on the serpentinization. Variations in these parameters allowed us to better constrain the temperature at which serpentinization occurred, the generation of other Fe-rich phases such as Fe-brucite and/or Fe-rich serpentine as well as distinctive rock textures formed at different serpentinization degrees.

We have investigated the magnetic properties and magnetostriction of ZnxNi1-xMnSb compounds prepared by solid state reaction method. It is found that for x less than 0.6 the magnetization of ZnxNi1-xMnSb almost remains unchanged. However, when x is larger than 0.6 the magnetization starts to drop linearly. Experimental result indicates that at low Zn concentrations, x < 0.7, the Curie temperature (TC) decreases with increasing Zn concentration x. However, when x > 0.7, the Curie temperature increases distinctly with increasing x. The Zn concentrartion dependence of magnetostrictive ceofficient is also studied. The experimental curve shows that when x < 0.6 the value of magnetostriction coefficient for ZnxNi1-xMnSb decreases linearly with the increasing Zn concentration x. However, when x is above 0.6, the magnetostrictive ceofficient raises distinctly. By analyzing the XRD pattern, the structures of the materials are examined and the relationship between the properties and the structures are discussed. A structural phase transition is observed. It has been indicated that the structure plays an important role in the magnetic and magnetostrictive properties of the system.

ABSTRACTThe variation of ac magnetic properties along the length of melt-spun Fe-based amorphous ribbons was examined in relation to the variations of the roller surface temperature and the ribbon thickness. The results indicated that the lengthwise variation of magnetic properties strongly depends both on the roller surface temperature and the ribbon thickness. The critical cooling rates at which core loss begins to increase were determined from the relationship between core loss and cooling rate. For ribbons cast at lower cooling rate than critical cooling rate, the finedomain patterns were usually observed on the free surface. From the disappearance of the fine-domain pattern and the remarkable decrease of core loss by removal of the surface layers, it is ascertained that the surface layers deteriorate magnetic properties.

AbstractPerovskite-like mixed metal ruthenates are of interest owing to their varied electronic and magnetic properties, which are heavily dependent on the ordering of the transition metals. We report the synthesis and structural characterization of the first 1:2 ordered perovskite ruthenate, Sr3CaRu2O9. The structure was determined from a combination of powder X-ray, electron and neutron diffraction data and is characterized by a 1:2 ordering of Ca2+ and Ru5+ over the sixcoordinate B-sites of the perovskite lattice. Sr3CaRu2O9 is the first example of this structure-type to include a majority metal with d electrons (Ru(V), d3). The relationship of this material to the K2NiF4-type Sr1.5Ca0.5RuO4 (i.e., Sr3CaRu2O8) highlights the dramatic effects of the ruthenium valence on the resultant structure. Remarkably, these two structures can be quantitatively interconverted by the appropriate choice of reaction temperature and atmosphere.

Abstract Single crystals of the new oxochlorotantalate Nd7.33Ta8O28Cl6, could be obtained only by chemical transport reactions (T2 → T1; T2 - 1000 °C, T, = 900 °C) with mixtures of Cl2/TaCl5 as transport agent. NdTaO4 was chosen as the starting material. A direct preparative route to Nd7.33Ta8O28Cl6 from binary and ternary components, however, was not successful. Nd7.33Ta8O28Cl6 , crystallizes in the space group Cmmm with a = 10.3381(8) Å, b = 18.865(1) Å, c - 3.9152(3) A; Z = 1. The structure was refined to R - 4.42%, R w = 2.76%. Main building units are pairs of edge-sharing TaO6 -octahedra which are connected with threefold capped trigonal prisms around Nd. Especially remarkable is one Nd position with an occupation factor of 0.833. The relationship of this new structure type with Nd2Ta2O7Cl2 is considered. Furthermore, we have measured the magnetic susceptibilities of both Nd-compounds in a temperature range from 3,6 to 251,3 K. The results are compared with calculated data.
