The Palin Parent Rating Scales: Parents' Perspectives of Childhood Stuttering and Its Impact

Purpose The goal of this study is to explore the psychometric properties of the Parent Rating Scales–V1 (S. K. Millard, S. Edwards, & F. M. Cook, 2009), an assessment tool for parents of children who stutter, and to refine the measure accordingly. Method We included 259 scales completed prior to therapy. An exploratory factor analysis determined the test constructs and identified the items that had greatest loadings on those factors. Items that did not load on the factors were removed, and normative scores calculated. Results The resulting 19-item questionnaire measures three factors: (a) the impact of stuttering on the child; (b) the severity of stuttering and its impact on the parents; and (c) the parents' knowledge about stuttering and confidence in managing it. Reliability was demonstrated, norms established, and an automated online version constructed. Conclusions The Palin Parent Rating Scale is a valid and reliable tool, providing a method of exploring parents' perceptions of stuttering, the impact it has on the child and themselves, and the parents' knowledge of and confidence in managing the stuttering. This is an important addition to the existing range of assessments that may be used to evaluate stuttering in children up to age 14;6 (years;months) and allows the wider targets of parent-led therapy programs to be evaluated.

Childbirth has been identified as a possible traumatic experience, leading to traumatic stress responses and even to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The current study investigated the psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) in a group of women who recently gave birth (N = 435). In addition, a comparison was made between the original IES and the IES-R. The scale showed high internal consistency (α = 0.88). Using confirmatory factor analysis no support was found for a three-factor structure of an intrusion, an avoidance, and a hyperarousal factor. Goodness of fit was only reasonable, even after fitting one intrusion item on the hyperarousal scale. The IES-R correlated significantly with scores on depression and anxiety self-rating scales, as well as with scores on a self-rating scale of posttraumatic stress disorder. Although the IES-R can be used for studying posttraumatic stress reactions in women who recently gave birth, the original IES proved to be a better instrument compared to the IES-R. It is concluded that adding the hyperarousal scale to the IES-R did not make the scale stronger.

Parents and teachers play a significant role in the diagnosis of ADHD in children in the clinical setting. With the same in consideration a study was conducted to compare the perception between parents and teachers on the rating scales for ADHD children. The study was conducted on a sample of parents and teachers of 100 children diagnosed as having ADHD as per ICD-10 diagnostic criteria. A newly constructed and standardized parent rating scale for parents of ADHD children and attention deficit comprehensive teacher rating scale for teachers was administered on the target sample. Results indicate that there was statistically no significant difference in the rating of perception between parents and teachers on four dimensions, viz (i) attention (ii) hyperactivity (iii) social skills (iv) oppositional behaviour of ADHD children. To verify these findings, positive correlation was found between parents and teachers perception on all the four dimensions.J Med Sci.2010;13(1);11-14

The hypothesis that the parents and siblings of children with nephrotic syndrome are more likely to develop psychosocial problems than those of healthy children was tested. Seventy-nine siblings from 36 such families were compared with 79 healthy children from closely matched families using interviews, parent rating scales, teachers' reports, and psychological tests. Although few striking differences were found between the two groups, the findings suggest several areas of increased vulnerability among the parents and siblings of children with nephrosis. Parents often denied the existence of apparently stressful events, but the personality profiles of the siblings suggested decreased social confidence and a lesser degree of self-acceptance. Evidence of inhibition, such as less aggression and poorer academic performance, were also described in response to questions in the interview. These results should prove useful to clinicians in the management of families of children with this or other chronic illnesses.
