Energy-efficient electric motors are gathering an increased attention since they are used in electric cars or to reduce operational costs, for instance. Due to their high efficiency, permanent-magnet synchronous motors are used progressively more. However, the need to use rare-earth magnets for such high-efficiency motors is problematic not only in regard to the cost but also in socio-political and environmental aspects. Therefore, an increasing effort has to be put in finding the best design possible. The goals to achieve are, among others, to reduce the amount of rare-earth magnet material but also to increase the efficiency. In the first part of this multipart paper, characteristics of optimization problems in engineering and general methods to solve them are presented. In part two, different approaches to the design optimization problem of electric motors are highlighted. The last part will evaluate the different categories of optimization methods with respect to the criteria: degrees of freedom, computing time and the required user experience. As will be seen, there is a conflict of objectives regarding the criteria mentioned above. Requirements, which a new optimization method has to fulfil in order to solve the conflict of objectives will be presented in this last paper.

Buildings in Turkey consume a great amount of energy to supply comfort conditions. This is due to the ineffective design decisions by designers with no consideration of the environmental impact and energy efficiency. Thus, building design parameters should be studied and examined during the design stage considering the environment that is a crucial factor for the energy efficient building design, which may lead to better energy performance and fewer CO2 emission. BIM as a new way of working methodology enables energy efficient design solutions considering design parameters for the improved high building performance in Turkey. Therefore, this research aims to develop a strategic BIM framework encapsulating the optimized design process, technology implementation, building design rules considering the local values and energy performance assessment of the concept building design. Research adopts multi case studies methodology that helps to gain qualitative and quantitative insights and understand the current practices. Revit based BIM modelling is used with Design Builder for energy performance simulation in relation to the building design parameters. The outcome will be a design guide for the energy optimised building design in Turkey. This design guide will help designers to successful use of BIM for design optimization process, effective technology implementation, rules-based design development and energy assessment scheme reflecting local values for sustainable building design.

Abstract We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of suspended arrays of small volume, high quality factor (Q) silicon nitride photonic crystal nanobeam (PCNB) cavities with lateral nanorod fin structures. By controlling the alignment position of the fins with respect to the air holes, the resonance wavelength and Q-factor of the PCNB cavities can be tuned to realize the desired performance. Measured tunable range of 2 × 104 and 10 nm is achieved for Q-factor and resonance wavelength, respectively, with the highest Q-factor measured at 2.5 × 104. Incorporating such nanorod fins into the nanobeam cavity is demonstrated to provide improved mechanical support, thermal transport, and channels of lateral carrier injection for the suspended PCNB. The proposed PCNB cavities with lateral fins are advantageous for energy efficient, ultra-compact lasers, modulators, filters, and sensors.

Crude oil resources in the world continue to diminish; automobile, agricultural machinery and construction machinery manufacturing companies are placing more emphasis on energy efficient series hydraulic hybrid systems which can replace their conventional transmission systems. Series hydraulic hybrid system is a mechatronics system with two source of power (that includes prime mover and hydro-pneumatic accumulator) which drives the vehicle. Even though, it has been proven as an energy efficient system, sizing of the components or sub-system for automobiles has got a major influence on energy efficiency of vehicle. In this paper, a power bond graph approach is used to model the dynamics of series hydraulic hybrid system and simulation results elucidate various modes of operations. It also shows the dynamic response of hydro-pneumatic accumulator, prime-mover and system output speed. Further, design optimization of system is carried out to optimize the physical /process parameters for the maximum system's output energy that, leads to increase in energy efficiency and environmental friendly vehicle.
