This paper illustrates how software and hardware for telecommunications and data acquisition enable cost-effective monitoring of peaking gas turbines using personal computers. It describes the design and evaluation of a system which transmits data from each start-up and shutdown over 1,500 miles to a monitoring computer. It presents system structure, interfaces, data content, and management. The system captures transient sequences of acceleration, synchronization, loading, thermal stabilization, steady operation, shutdown and cooldown; it yields coherent sets of speed, load, temperature, journal eccentricity, vibration amplitude, and phase at intervals appropriately spaced in time and speed. The data may be used to characterize and identify operational problems.

<p>Chemical by product diagnostic technique is an efficient, cost-effective and reliable diagnostic technique for gas insulate switchgear condition monitoring in view of its high sensitivity and anti- internal and external electromagnetic interference and noise. In this research paper, coaxial simulated gas insulated switchgear chamber and four different types of artificial defect were designed to cause partial discharge that will simulate the decomposition of sulphur hexafluoride gas in the chamber when energize. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer was used as the method of chemical by-product technique to detect the SF<sub>6</sub> decomposition product and its concentration. Different numerous by-products were detected (SO<sub>2</sub>, SOF<sub>2</sub>, SO<sub>2</sub>F<sub>2</sub>, SO<sub>2</sub>F<sub>10</sub>, SiF<sub>4</sub>, CO, C<sub>3</sub>F<sub>8</sub>, C<sub>2</sub>F<sub>6 </sub>) under this experiment using four different types of defect and the by-products differs with the type of defect and the generation rate. Gas insulated switchgear health condition can be feasibly diagnosed by analyzing the decomposition products of SF<sub>6</sub> to identify its fault.</p><p> </p>

In engineering, combining a number of solutions and technologies can result in more effective systems than using only one approach on its own. In particular, it has been shown that in condition monitoring (CM), smarter maintenance systems may be obtained by integrating various sensors together. This paper extends this idea by integrating various non-homogeneous technologies horizontally. The proposed system is an internet-based condition monitoring (e-CM) prototype that can identify abnormal tension in moving belts. It is shown that by applying a classification technique, known as novelty detection, it is possible to decide the status of belt tension by processing the belt vibration signals from an optical sensor (i.e. an indirect sensing approach). A novel method for industrial network communication using XML to create a single standard format for sensor information is also used to link the sensor to the process controller via the internet using the flexible CAN bus technology; this is used together with low-cost microcontrollers with a built-in ethernet link for data acquisition and transmission. The resulting integrated approach is more efficient because: (a) it can reduce waste by minimizing process interruptions caused by direct belt inspection methods while obtaining high detection accuracy (99.67 per cent) and (b) it can provide on-line remote CM that is cost-effective, simple, standardized, and scalable across a wide area and for a relatively large number of sensors. This improvement is especially important when applied to bottleneck processes and critical components.
