The present study investigates how diotic and dichotic masked thresholds, in a notched-noise masking paradigm, are affected by activation of the Medial OlivoCochlear (MOC) reflex. Thresholds were obtained for a 500-Hz pure tone diotic or a dichotic signal, S (S0 or Sπ respectively), in the presence of a simultaneous or forward diotic masker (bandpass noise with no notch or a 400-Hz notch). A diotic precursor sound (bandpass noise with a 400- or 800-Hz notch) was presented prior to the signal and masker to activate the MOC reflex. For simultaneous- and forward-masking conditions, the decrease in masked thresholds as a notch was introduced in the masker was larger for the diotic than for the dichotic condition. This resulted in a reduced binaural masking level difference (BMLD) for the masker with a notch. The precursor augmented these two effects. The results indicate that the effect of the precursor, eliciting the MOC reflex, is less pronounced when binaural cues are processed.

Two studies were devised to determine if objective quantification of the masking level difference is possible using the auditory evoked response (AER). In the first study, click stimuli were presented under three conditions: both the stimulus and masker in phase (SoNo); stimulus in phase, masker antiphasic (SoN π ); and stimulus antiphasic with masker in phase (S π No). In the second study 1000 Hz pure-tone stimuli were presented under SoNo and S π No phasic conditions. AER’s were obtained at various intensity levels for each condition. The AER demonstrated differences in N 1 -P 2 amplitudes evoked by the homophasic and antiphasic conditions for threshold and suprathreshold levels.

In random noise, masking is influenced almost entirely by noise components in a narrow band around the signal frequency. However, when the noise is not random, but has a modulation pattern which is coherent across frequency, noise components relatively remote from the signal frequency can actually produce a release from masking. This masking release has been called comodulation masking release (CMR). The present research investigated whether a similar release from masking occurs in the analysis of a suprathreshold signal. Specifically, the ability to detect the presence of a temporal gap was investigated in conditions which do and do not result in CMR for detection threshold. Similar conditions were investigated for the masking level difference (a binaural masking release phenomenon). The results indicated that suprathreshold masking release for gap detection occurred for both the masking-level difference (MLD) and for CMR. However, masking release for gap detection was generally smaller than that obtained for detection threshold. The largest gap detection masking release effects obtained corresponded to relatively low levels of stimulation, where gap detection was relatively poor.

The first aim of this study was to obtain a more detailed picture of the effect of masker bandwidth (20 Hz to 1000 Hz bandwidth) on the masking level difference (MLD) for a 500-Hz signal as a function of listener age. The results of the pure-tone signal experiment showed that the MLDs of older children differed from adults only for the narrowest masker bandwidth. In contrast, children younger than about 7 years of age tended to have smaller MLDs than adults at all but the widest masker bandwidths. These results suggest that the younger the listener, the wider the noise bandwidth must be for MLDs of adult magnitude to be observed. One interpretation of this effect is that younger listeners require relatively great spectral dissimilarity (and, therefore perceptual dissimilarity) between the signal and masker in order to obtain MLDs of adult magnitude. The second aim of this study was to test this possibility by determining the MLD for noise signals in cases where the signal and masker bandwidths were the same. The results of this experiment showed that the MLDs of children were as large as those of adults when the signal/masker bandwidth was 320 Hz, but were smaller than those of adults when the signal/masker bandwidth was 20 Hz. This indicates that the factor limiting the MLD for narrowband noise in children is related more to the masker bandwidth than to the perceptual similarity between the signal and the masker.

Results from a special battery of auditory tests are used to document, for the first time, recovery from a total unilateral hearing loss occurring as part of a latero-medial inferior pontine syndrome. Although sensitivity for pure tones and speech was regained within two months of onset, definite retrocochlear signs persisted for nine months. The tests which best demonstrated the lingering retrocochlear abnormality were binaural masking level difference procedures for 500 Hz pure tones and speech and examination of the amplitude of the acoustic reflex over a ten second time period. The relative sensitivity of other speech and pure tone tasks in detecting the retrocochlear problem is detailed.

Abstract Introduction The auditory structures of the brainstem are involved in binaural interaction, which contributes to sound location and auditory figure-background perception. Objective To investigate the performance of young adults in the masking level difference (MLD) test, brainstem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs) with click stimulus, and frequency-following response (FFR), as well as to verify the correlation between the findings, considering the topographic origin of the components of these procedures. Methods A total of 20 female subjects between 18 and 30 years of age, with normal hearing and no complaints concerning central auditory processing underwent a basic audiological evaluation, as well as the MLD test, BAEP and FFR. Results The mean result on the MLD test was of 10.70 dB. There was a statistically significant difference in the absolute latencies of waves I, III and V in the BAEPs of the ears. A change in the FFR characterized by the absence of the C, E and F waves was noticed. There was a statistically significant difference in the positive correlation of wave V in the BAEPs with the MLD. There was a statistically significant difference in the positive correlation of the mean MLD and the V, A and F components of the FFR. Conclusion The mean MLD was adequate. In the BAEPs, we observed that the click stimulus transmission occurred faster in the right ear. The FFR showed absence of some components. The mean MLD correlated positively with the BAEPs and FFR.
