Abstract The quality of dimension lumber (2 by 4 lumber) was preliminarily investigated in four common Mongolian softwoods: Pinus sylvestris L., Pinus sibirica Du Tour, Picea obovata Ledeb., and Larix sibirica Ledeb. to produce high quality dimension lumber for structural use. In total 61, 39, 67, and 37 pieces of lumber were prepared for Pinus sylvestris, Pinus sibirica, Picea obovata, and L. sibirica, respectively. The lumber was visually graded and then tested in static bending to obtain the 5% lower tolerance limits at 75% confidence level (f0.05) of the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and the modulus of rupture (MOR). In addition, the effects of sawing patterns on bending properties were also analyzed. The f0.05 of the MOE and MOR were 4.75 GPa and 15.6 MPa, 3.39 GPa and 11.0 MPa, 3.78 GPa and 11.7 MPa, and 6.07 GPa and 22.3 MPa for Pinus sylvestris, Pinus sibirica, Picea obovata, and L. sibirica, respectively. These results suggested that with a few exceptions, characteristic values of MOR in the four common Mongolian softwoods resembled those in similar commercial species already used. In visual grading, over 80% of total lumber was assigned to select structural and No. 1 grades in Pinus sylvestris and Pinus sibirica, whereas approximately 40% of total lumber in L. sibirica was No. 3 and out of grades. Sawing patterns affected bending properties in Pinus sylvestris and L. sibirica, but did not affect Pinus sibirica and Picea obovata. Dynamic Young's modulus was significantly correlated with bending properties of dimension lumber for the four species. Based on the results, it was concluded that dimension lumber for structural use can be produced from the four common Mongolian softwoods.

Introduction Given that pinch is a precision grip involved in sustained submaximal activities, a Sustained Contraction (SC) task could be associated to Maximal Voluntary Contraction (MVC). To better evaluate the thumb-index system, the test-retest reliability of pinch MVC and SC, measured by a visual feedback-based pinch gauge was assessed. Methods 26 healthy participants performed MVC and SC in two separate sessions. SC required to maintain 40%MVC as long as possible and it was evaluated in terms of time, accuracy (Mean Distance between force trace and target force, MD), precision (Coefficient of Variability of force trace, CV). MD and CV analyses were conducted dividing the SC task into three equivalent time stages (beginning, middle, exhaustion). Relative Reliability (RR) was measured by Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, and Absolute Reliability (AR) was measured by Standard Error of Measurement and by Bland-Altman plot. Results MVC and Time showed high RR and AR in both hands. RR of MD and CV in right hand was excellent in the beginning and middle stages, and fair in the exhaustion one, showing decreasing reliability as fatigue increases. In the left hand RR of MD and CV was generally lower. MD showed excellent reliability in the beginning stage and good reliability in the other stages. CV showed fair relative reliability at both beginning and middle stages, excellent in the last one. Conversely, it was observed high AR of MD and CV in all stages in both hands. Conclusions All indices are reliable to assess motor control of thumb-index pinch in both hands.

In this study, Larix gemilinii and metal plate were selected as the main materials. According to GB5005-2003, the connection properties of tension-splice joint and larch wood were investigated. The results showed that the elastic modulus of Larix gemilinii was not affected by the performance parameters of tension-splice joint greatly and three kinds of failure modes were introduced. Besides the design value for the ultimate bearing capacity of Larix gemilinii and the design value for the ultimate tensile bearing capacity of the metal plates were determined. A conservative calculation method for ductility ratio of metal plates was proposed. The ductility ratio of the metal plate connected joint changed with the construction modes, and the ductility ratio for metal plate parallel to the grain (more than 2.4) was obviously bigger than that of perpendicular to the grain, which complies with the requirements for ductility ratio in anti-seismic structure.

Abstract Background Due to the differences in the way gun law permissiveness scales were created and speculation about the politically motivated underpinnings of the various scales, there have been questions about their reliability. Methods We compared seven gun law permissiveness scales, varying by type and sources, for an enhanced understanding of the extent to which choice of a gun law permissiveness scale could affect studies related to gun violence outcomes in the United States. Specifically, we evaluated seven different scales: two rankings, two counts, and three scores, arising from a range of sources. We calculated Spearman correlation coefficients for each pair of scales compared. Cronbach’s standardized alpha and Guttman’s lambda were calculated to evaluate the relative reliability of the scales, and we re-calculated Cronbach’s alpha after systematically omitting each scale to assess whether the omitted scale contributed to lower internal consistency between scales. Factor analysis was used to determine single factor loadings and estimates. We also assessed associations between permissiveness of gun laws and total firearm deaths and suicides in multivariable regression analyses. Results All pairs of scales were highly correlated (average Spearman’s correlation coefficient r = 0.77) and had high relative reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.968, Guttman’s lambda = 0.975). All scales load onto a single factor. The choice of scale did not meaningfully change the parameter estimates for the associations between permissiveness of gun laws and gun deaths and suicides. Conclusion Gun law permissiveness scales are highly correlated despite any perceived political agenda, and the choice of gun law permissiveness scale has little effect on study conclusions related to gun violence outcomes.
