Background: Schoolboy rugby is a popular sport which forms the bedrock of rugby development in many African countries, including Zimbabwe. With burgeoning talent identification programmes, the development of multi-dimensional, logically- validated, and reliable test batteries is essential to inform the objective selection of potentially talented young rugby athletes. Objectives: This study sought evidence on the absolute and relative test-retest reliability of the component test items in the newly-assembled SCRuM test battery. Methods: Utilising a pragmatic test-retest experimental design, a sample of 41 Under-19 schoolboy players playing competitive rugby in the elite Super Eight Schools Rugby League in Harare, Zimbabwe, participated in the study. Results: Physiological and game-specific skills tests which showed good to excellent relative reliability and acceptable absolute reliability, included: 20 m and 40 m speed, L-run, Vertical Jump (VJ), 60 s Push-Up, 2 kg Medicine Ball Chest Throw test (2 kg MBCT), Wall Sit Leg Strength test (WSLS), Repeated High Intensity Exercise test (RHIE), One Repetition Maximum Back Squat (1-RM BS) and Bench Press tests (1-RM BP), Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Level 1 test (Yo-Yo IRT L1), Tackling Proficiency test, Passing Ability Skill test and Running and Catching Ability skill test. Conclusion: All these tests are reliable and warrant inclusion in the SCRuM test battery for possible profiling of U19 schoolboy rugby players during the ‘in-season’ phase provided there is adequate participant familiarisation and test standardisation. The test-retest ICCs and measurement errors are generalisable to other young athletes in this population, making the tests useful for the evaluation of training and developmental effects of the measured constructs.

An analysis of the muscle mechanical properties (MMPs) of the pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) is relevant for understanding the physiopathology of urinary incontinence (UI). However, there is no objective and reliable methodology currently available for quantifying the MMPs of PFMs. Thus, the objective was to determine the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the MMPs of PFM assessment with a hand-held tonometer device, called the MyotonPRO, in young women with and without UI. Sociodemographic and pelvic floor questionnaires, plus MMPs of PFMs were assessed in 38 nulliparous women with UI and 40 matched healthy women by two trained physiotherapists on two different occasions, 48–72 h apart. Good to excellent absolute reliability was found for tone, stiffness, and decrement of both intra- and inter-rater analyses in both study groups (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient ranged from 0.75 to 0.92), with a trend of lower values for relaxation and creep. The standard error of measurement (SEM) did not achieve 10% of the mean values for any MMPs. The minimum detectable change (MDC) values were also provided for clinical applications. In conclusion, the relative reliability of tone, stiffness, and the assessment of the decrement of PFMs with MyotonPRO is good to excellent for UI and healthy women. The SEM and MDC values were acceptable for their application in clinical settings.

Purpose: To investigate the test–retest reliability of physiological variables across four different test days and four different submaximal exercise intensities during seated upper-body poling (UBP).Methods: Thirteen abled-bodied, upper-body trained men (age 29±3years; body mass 84±12kg; height 183±5cm) performed four submaximal 4-min stages of seated UBP on four separate test days. The four submaximal stages were set at individual power outputs corresponding to a rating of perceived exertion of 9, 11, 13, and 15. The absolute reliability for pairwise test-day comparisons of the physiological variables was investigated with the smallest detectable change percentage (%SDC) and the relative reliability with the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC).Results: Absolute and relative reliability across test-day comparisons and submaximal stages were moderate to excellent for all variables investigated (V̇O2 – %SDC range: 5–13%, ICC range: 0.93–0.99; HR – %SDC range: 6–9%, ICC range: 0.91–0.97) other than blood lactate, for which absolute reliability was poor and relative reliability highly variable (%SDC range: 26–69%, ICC range: 0.44–0.92). Furthermore, absolute and relative reliability were consistent across the low-to-moderate exercise intensity spectrum and across test days.Conclusion: Absolute and relative test–retest reliability were acceptable for all investigated physiological variables but blood lactate. The consistent test–retest reliability across the exercise intensity spectrum and across test days indicates that a familiarization period to the specific exercise modality may not be necessary. For generalizability, these findings need to be confirmed in athletes with a disability by future large-scale studies.

This study provided a proof-of-concept and test–retest reliability of measures frequently used to assess a mental fatigue paradigm. After familiarization, 28 healthy men performed (40-min) the Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVP) test in a test–retest design, having mental fatigue sensation, motivation, emotional arousal, total mood disturbance, and electroencephalography (EEG) in the prefrontal cortex measured before and after the test. EEG was recorded during a 3-min rest so that the power spectral density of theta (3–7 Hz) and alpha (8–13 Hz) bands was calculated. Pre-to-post RVP test changes in psychological and physiological domains were compared (paired-T tests), and absolute (standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimal difference (MD)) and relative reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)) were calculated. The RVP test induced an increase (p < 0.05) in mental fatigue sensation (120.9% (109.4; 132.4)) and total mood disturbance (3.5% (−6.3; 13.3)), and a decrease in motivation (−7.1% (−9.2; −5.1)) and emotional arousal (−16.2% (−19.1; −13.2)). Likewise, EEG theta (59.1% (33.2; 85.0); p < 0.05), but not alpha band, increased due to RVP test. All psychophysiological responses showed poor-to-moderate relative reliability. Changes in mental fatigue sensation and motivation were higher than SEM and MD, but changes in EEG theta band were higher only than SEM. Mental fatigue sensation, motivation, and EEG theta band were sensitive to distinguish a mental fatigue paradigm despite true mental fatigue effects on theta activity may be trivial.

"ABSTRACT. Introduction: Coaches should be able to estimate successfully different physical attributes of junior tennis player’s performance such as power, in order to monitor players’ progress and to design the most appropriate training program. However, this process requires reliable and valid field tests. Objective: Aim of this study was to examine absolute and relative reliability of overhand ball throw (OBT) test within testing session and to investigate its validity. Methods: 257 Hungarian junior boy and girl tennis players (aged 11- 17) separated into four groups, performed OBT and serve speed (SS) tests of standardised protocol. Results: Dependent sample t-test revealed no significant (p= 0.31-57>0.05) difference between test and retest sample means within testing session and magnitude of effect size (dz=0.1-0.5) were trivial for all groups. Furthermore, all groups had low typical percentage error (CV= 3-4 %), and standard error of measurement values was consistently low (SEM= 0.12- 0.18). Within test-retest consistency illustrated strong relative reliability (ICC= 0.98-0.99). Moreover, significantly large to very large positive correlations were found between OBT and SS (r= 0.57-0.81; p˂0.01) tests. The coefficient of determination indicated that OBT explained 32-65% of the SS for groups. Conclusions: These findings suggest that absolute and relative reliability of OBT test is high within testing session and validity of OBT test is acceptable for measuring power ability of flat serve execution in junior tennis players."

Failures to replicate high-profile priming effects have raised questions about the reliability of so-called “social priming” phenomena. However, not only are many of the relevant studies not particularly social in nature, but other robust priming effects that are clearly social in nature do not count as social priming. Most importantly, the focus on the supposedly social aspect of the work has obscured factors that help to account for the relative reliability of priming effects. Here, we examine the construct of social priming, describe some simple demonstrations on the role of experimental design in priming reproducibility, and discuss future avenues for building a better understanding of priming. We conclude that the term “social priming” should be laid to rest, and that it is time to move past arguments about the reliability of specific effects and shift our energy to building theories that help us better understand the mechanisms underlying priming effects.

This study aimed to assess the within- and between-session reliability of the KiSprint system for determining force-velocity-power (FVP) profiling during sprint running. Thirty (23 males, 7 females; 18.7 ± 2.6 years;) young high-level sprinters performed maximal effort sprints in two sessions separated by one week. Split times (5, 10, 20 and 30 m), which were recorded with a laser distance meter (a component of the KiSprint system), were used to determine the horizontal FVP profile using the Samozino’s field-based method. This method assesses the FVP relationships through estimates of the step-averaged ground reaction forces in sagittal plane during sprint acceleration using only anthropometric and spatiotemporal (split times) data. We also calculated the maximal theoretical power, force and velocity capabilities and the slope of the FV relationship, the maximal ratio of horizontal-to-resultant force (RF), and the decrease in the RF (DRF). Overall, the results showed moderate or good to excellent within- and between-session reliability for all variables (ICC > 0.75; CV < 10 %), with the exception of FV slope and DRF that showed low relative reliability (ICC = 0.47-0.48 within session, 0.31-0.33 between-session) and unacceptable between-session absolute reliability values (CV = 10.9-11.1 %). Future studies are needed to optimize the protocol in order to maximize the reliability of the FVP variables, especially when practitioners are interested in the FV slope and DRF. In summary, our results question the utility of the sprint-based FVP profiling for individualized training prescription, since the reliability of the FV slope and D RF variables is highly questionable.

Introduction Given that pinch is a precision grip involved in sustained submaximal activities, a Sustained Contraction (SC) task could be associated to Maximal Voluntary Contraction (MVC). To better evaluate the thumb-index system, the test-retest reliability of pinch MVC and SC, measured by a visual feedback-based pinch gauge was assessed. Methods 26 healthy participants performed MVC and SC in two separate sessions. SC required to maintain 40%MVC as long as possible and it was evaluated in terms of time, accuracy (Mean Distance between force trace and target force, MD), precision (Coefficient of Variability of force trace, CV). MD and CV analyses were conducted dividing the SC task into three equivalent time stages (beginning, middle, exhaustion). Relative Reliability (RR) was measured by Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, and Absolute Reliability (AR) was measured by Standard Error of Measurement and by Bland-Altman plot. Results MVC and Time showed high RR and AR in both hands. RR of MD and CV in right hand was excellent in the beginning and middle stages, and fair in the exhaustion one, showing decreasing reliability as fatigue increases. In the left hand RR of MD and CV was generally lower. MD showed excellent reliability in the beginning stage and good reliability in the other stages. CV showed fair relative reliability at both beginning and middle stages, excellent in the last one. Conversely, it was observed high AR of MD and CV in all stages in both hands. Conclusions All indices are reliable to assess motor control of thumb-index pinch in both hands.

Introduction Assessment of tendon stiffness in vivo traditionally involves maximal muscle contractions, which can be challenging in pain populations. Alternative methods are suggested, although the clinimetric properties are sparse. This study investigated the concurrent validity and the intrarater reliability of two ultrasound-based methods for assessing patellar tendon stiffness. Methods Patellar tendon stiffness was assessed in 17 healthy adults with (a) the dynamometer and B-mode ultrasonography method (DBUS) and (b) the strain elastography method. Correlations between the two methods were analysed using Kendall’s Tau-b. The relative reliability of both methods was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The absolute reliability was presented by Bland–Altman plots, standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change (MDC). Results No correlation was found between the two methods, irrespective of reference tissue in strain elastography (Kendall’s Tau-b Hoffa = –0.01 (p = 1.00), Kendall’s Tau-b subcutis = 0.04 (p = 0.87)). Tracking of the tendon elongation in the DBUS method had good to excellent relative reliability (ICC = 0.95 (95% confidence interval – CI: 0.85–0.98)) and high absolute reliability (SEM = 0.04 mm (1%), MDC = 0.11 mm (3%)). The strain elastography method had good to excellent relative reliability, regardless of reference tissue (ICC Hoffa = 0.95 (95% CI: 0.86–0.98), ICC subcutis = 0.94 (95% CI: 0.82–0.98)), but low absolute reliability (SEM Hoffa = 0.06 (20%), MDC Hoffa = 0.18 (60%), SEM subcutis = 0.12 (41%), MDC subcutis = 0.32 (110%)). Conclusions No concurrent validity existed for DBUS and strain elastography, suggesting that the two methods measure different tendon properties. The overall reliability for the DBUS method was high, but the absolute reliability was low for strain elastography stiffness ratios. Therefore, the strain elastography method may not be recommended for tracking differences in patellar tendon stiffness in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND Poor physical fitness has negative impact on health conditions. More and more health-related applications (App) have emerged to reduce burden of medicine, and inconvenience of long distance. However, there were insufficient studies about home-based fitness tests on the app. Insufficient monitor of physiological signals during executing fitness assessment was noted. Therefore, we developed the fitness App incorporating all components of fitness assessments under physiological signals monitor. OBJECTIVE The first aim of study was to investigate the reliability of home-based fitness assessments on health mobile app in healthy adults. Secondly, we aimed to examine and compare the results of fitness assessment on the App. METHODS Thirty-one healthy young adults self-executed fitness assessments on the App for 2 trials in 2-3 day interval. The fitness assessments include cardiorespiratory endurance, strength, flexibility, mobility and balance tests. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was computed as relative reliability of fitness assessments and determined consistency between 2 trials. The standard error of measurement (SEM), smallest real difference at 90% confidence interval (SRD90), and Bland-Altman analyses were analyzed and used for agreement, sensitivity to real change, and systematic bias detection. RESULTS The relative reliability of fitness assessments was moderate to good (ICCs for raw scores= 0.8 to 0.99, for converting scores= 0.69 to 0.99). The SEM and SRD90 were 1.44 to 6.91 and 3.36 to 16.11, respectively in all fitness assessments. The 95% confidence interval of mean difference indicated no significant systematic error between 2 trials in strength, and balance tests. The Bland-Altman analyses revealed no significant systematic bias between 2 trials for all fitness assessments and few outliers. The Bland-Altman plots illustrated narrow limits of agreement for UE strength, trunk strength, and right leg stance tests, indicating good agreement between 2 trials. CONCLUSIONS Home-based fitness assessments on the health mobile application were reliable and feasible. The results of fitness assessments can offer comprehensive understanding of health conditions and help to prescribe safe and suitable exercise training. CLINICALTRIAL ChiCTR2000030905
