Abstract Steel reinforcement corrosion is one of the most serious causes of the premature deterioration of North American bridges and parking garages. Carbon steel rebars are very vulnerable to corrosion in salt contaminated concrete from deicing or coastal environment since the chloride ions induce severe corrosion as they reach the reinforcing steel rebars and depassivate the carbon steel. This paper evaluates the potential of using stainless steel coatings as a means to protect steel rebars from corrosion, especially in a salt contaminated concrete environment. The 316 L stainless steel coated coupons and rebars were prepared using Arc-sprayed and HP/HVOF processes. The corrosion performance of coatings were evaluated using linear polarization, a.c. impedance and salt spray techniques. Metallographic examination was also performed to characterize the coating microstructure.

Chulalongkorn University (CU) is located at the heart of Bangkok, which is one of the most traffic congested cities in the world. It is very crucial for the university to develop a green and clean transportation system that is good for both the CU community and the whole society. To reduce on-campus traffic, the university provides four parking buildings on the edge of four corners of the campus to serve visitors, students, faculties and staffs who travel by private cars. While providing added convenience, these parking garages reduce traffic congestion on campus and, thus, pollutions from harmful emissions and traffic noises. To promote eco-friendly transportation in the campus, the university provides “CU Shuttle Bus” - an electric shuttle bus service that cover not only campus area, but also reach out to public sky train and subway stations around the campus. The CU Shuttle Bus’s mobile application, developed by engineering students, helps improve user experience by showing all useful information including campus map, bus routing, and real-time locations of all buses. To encourage walking and cycling within the campus and to promote good health and fitness, the university has been constructing covered walkways and bike lanes throughout the campus. In addition, “CU Bike” - a bike sharing program, was first introduced in 2014 and has quickly grown in popularity among CU students since. A new “CU Toyota Hamo”, an electric vehicle rental program, is another great option of green transportations for those who cannot ride a bicycle and for older people of the aging society. All these projects help promote the development of innovations and practices that are both sustainable and protective of the environment of Chulalongkorn University, as well as the surrounding community, the country and planet as a whole.

Shrinkage cracking can be a critical problem in concrete construction, especially for flat structures such as highway pavements, slabs for parking garages, and bridge decks. One way to reduce the shrinkage cracking is to provide reinforcement in the form of wire mesh to resist tensile forces. In recent years, short, randomly distributed fibers have been used to control shrinkage cracking. The efficiency of shrinkage-reducing admixtures (SRAs) in controlling restrained shrinkage cracking of concrete is reviewed. A ring-type specimen was used for restrained shrinkage cracking tests. The SRA selected for this investigation was a propylene glycol derivative, which was used at 1 and 2 percent by weight of cement. Free (unrestrained) shrinkage, weight loss, compressive strength, and fracture toughness were also investigated. The results of SRA concretes were compared with that of plain concrete with the same water-to-cement ratio. A theoretical model based on nonlinear fracture mechanics was developed for predicting transverse cracking of the concrete ring specimen caused by drying shrinkage. The model prediction of time to cracking compared well with the experimental data. The model can be extended to different geometries and dimensions than those considered in this research.

The aim of the paper is to verify the existence of a market failure in the parking market in the city of Brno with regard to the possibility of providing public support for the construction or operation of parking garages. The paper deals with only one of the signs of market failure, which is the demonstration of imperfect competition. The existence of imperfect competition is conditioned by the dominant position on the market (market share of at least 40%). The market is defined on the basis of walking distance as a key factor for the use of a parking space and on the basis of the categorization of individual types of parking spaces (especially with regard to street parking and parking in car parks and parking garages and P + R parking). The performed analysis did not confirm the existence of imperfect competition on the parking market in the central part of the city of Brno.

This paper reports the characterization of the 2.45-GHz-ISM-band radio wave propagation channel. Specifically, measurements were performed in an underground parking garage, with the aim of optimizing breadcrumb systems for a Rapid Intervention Team application. The effects of the high penetration loss and large reflections by the concrete reinforced building structure on the path loss and the large-scale fading were studied. Based on the analysis of the wireless channel, critical points for reliable communication between members of a Rapid Intervention Team were identified. In particular, attention was paid to dealing with large, spatially confined signal losses due to shadowing, the anticipation of corner losses and the ability of the system to operate on multiple floors.
