Artificial mechanical heart valve (MHV) replacement is the common cardiovascular surgical procedure, yet its effect is far from satisfaction. Most important reasons lie in the model design and choice of the materials in the fabrication of the prosthetic heart valves. Based on systematic design methodology of TRIZ theory (Russian acronym for Theory of Solving Inventive Problem), the device structure is analyzed by comparing the past successful designs generated during the evolution of MHV. This paper represents a modeling technique integrating the well-established TRIZ with the conflict and contradiction modeling, substance-field and product functional analysis tools and provides some important trends in evolutionary development of production systems in MHV design. By analyzing the structural behavior and material performance, a complex case study from the research of different structural patterns and characteristics of current tri-leaflet modeling shows the validity of TRIZ theory to guide MHV design.

In this paper we present a hybrid optimization approach to perform robust design. The motivation for this work is the fact that many realistic engineering systems are mutimodal in nature with multiple local optima, and moreover may have one or more uncertain design parameters. The approach that is presented utilizes both local and global optimization algorithms to find good design points more efficiently than either could alone. The mean and variance of the objective function at a design point is calculated using Monte Carlo simulation and is used to drive the optimization process. To demonstrate the usefulness of this approach a case study is considered involving the design of a beam with dimensional uncertainty.

Abstract:The aim of the research is to make a comparison between system integrated measurement technologies in the field of engineering education in order to the students getting more detailed knowledge about the high level problem solving. A comparative case study was conducted with 3 different types of systems, as follows: Beckhoff, National Instruments, and HBM. The criteria of the systems are determined based on experience and the importance level of them was calculated by preference matrix. The ranks of the alternatives are calculated by Kesselring method, which provides the effectiveness value of the systems compared to the benchmark. The result of the paper shows a suitable method for selecting engineering systems.

The main idea of this chapter is to promote maintenance centered to safety, in accordance to adaptive fuzzy inference model, which has online adjustment to working conditions. Input data for this model are quality of service indicators of analyzed engineering system: reliability, maintainability, failure consequence, and severity and detectability. Indicators in final form are obtained with permanent monitoring of the engineering system and statistical processing. Level of safety is established by composition and ranking of indicators according to fuzzy inference engine. The problem of monitoring and processing of indicators comprising safety is solved by using the features that Industry4.0 provides. Maintenance centered to safety is important for complex, multi-hierarchy engineering systems. Sudden failures on such systems could have significant financial and environmental effect. Developed model will be tested in the final part of the chapter, in the case study of bucket wheel excavator.
