Two new supramolecular polymeric coordination complexes, {Zn(phen)2[Au2(CN)4](H2O)}·1.5H2O 1 and {Mn(phen)[Au2(CN)4](H2O)}·PriOH 2, have been obtained through a self-assembly process. The three-dimensional supramolecular architectures of compounds 1 and 2 are sustained by aurophilic, hydrogen-bonding, and/or π–π interactions. Gold atoms linked with aurophilic bonds arrange in a pattern not frequently observed.

In order to develop transferable and practical avenues for the assembly of coordination complexes into architectures with specific dimensionality, a strategy utilizing ligands capable of simultaneous metal coordination and self-complementary hydrogen bonding is presented. The three ligands used, 2(1H)-pyrazinone, 4(3H)-pyrimidinone and 4(3H)-quinazolinone, consistently deliver the required synthetic vectors in a series of CdII coordination polymers, allowing for reproducible supramolecular synthesis that is insensitive to the different steric and geometric demands from potentially disruptive counterions. In all nine crystallographically characterized compounds presented here, directional intermolecular N—H...O hydrogen bonds between ligands on adjacent complex building blocks drive the assembly and orientation of discrete building blocks into largely predictable topologies. Furthermore, whether the solids are prepared from solution or through liquid-assisted grinding, the structural outcome is the same, thus emphasizing the robustness of the synthetic protocol. The details of the molecular recognition events that take place in this series of compounds have been clearly delineated and rationalized in the context of calculated molecular electrostatic potential surfaces.

Solid-state self-assembly of 2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-tris(methanaminium) 2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triacetate is mediated by hydrogen bonding. It gives rise to three-dimensional network of hydrogen bonds in which each trication is coordinated with eight trianions and vice versa. The resulting crystal structure topologically corresponds to the simple inorganic cesium chloride type.

The construction of a porphyrin array by a stepwise, hierarchical self-assembly process is described. Four molecular clip host molecules are complexed, in a solid state self-assembly process, to one porphyrin guest molecule. When dissolved in chloroform, the 4:1 host-guest complexes spontaneously self-assemble into an array in which the porphyrins are organized in a cofacial stack. The ensemble is stabilized by a combination of π-π interactions between the porphyrins and between the aromatic surfaces of the host molecules.

Manganese(II) bis(4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenylbutane-1,3-dionate) complexes with pyridin-4-one (pyon), 3-hydroxypyridin-2-one (hpyon), 1-fluoropyridine (pyF) and methanol were prepared and the solid-state structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The coordination of the metal center in all complexes was found to be octahedral. In compounds [Mn(tfpb)2(pyon)2] (1) and [Mn(tfpb)2(hpyon)2] (2) extended hydrogen bonding is present facilitating the formation of a three-dimensional supramolecular structure in 1 and a layered structure in 2 through N–H···O hydrogen bonding enhanced by C–H···O interactions as well as C–F···π interactions. In [Mn(tfpb)2(pyF)2] (3) a layered structure is formed through C–H···O and C–H···F interactions as well as π···π and C–F···π interactions. In [Mn(tfpb)2(MeOH)2] (4) a layered structure is formed through a combination of O–H···O and C–F···π interactions.

The title platinum(II) complex, [Pt(C10H8BrN2)(C5H7O2)], has a bidentate cyclometallated phenylimidazolylidene ligand and an acetylacetonate spectator ligand, which form a distorted square-planar coordination environment around the PtIIcentre. In the solid state, the molecules are oriented in a parallel fashion by intermolecular hydrogen bonding and π–π and C—H...π interactions, while close Pt...Pt contacts are not observed. The structure is only the second example for this new class of compounds.

The asymmetric unit of the title salt, C7H7N2+·BF4−, comprises two independent but nearly identical formula units. The solid-state structure comprises corrugated layers of cations and anions, formed by C—H...F hydrogen bonding, that are approximately parallel to (010). Further C—H...F hydrogen bonding consolidates the three-dimensional architecture. The sample was refined as a two-component non-merohedral twin.
