Systematics of the genus Halgerda Bergh, 1880 (Heterobranchia : Nudibranchia) of Mozambique with descriptions of six new species

The species of the genus Halgerda Bergh, 1880, are restricted to the Indo-Pacific; some being common inhabitants of reefs off the coast of Mozambique. These species have been relatively well studied morphologically, but few molecular data are available. During a seven-year period surveying the reefs of Mozambique, 11 Halgerda spp. were collected, six of which are described here. We provide details on their morphology, anatomy, novel genetic markers and additional information about their colour variation. The new species described herein are Halgerda leopardalis, sp. nov., H. mozambiquensis, sp. nov., H. jennyae, sp. nov., H. meringuecitrea, sp. nov., H. nuarroensis, sp. nov. and H. indotessellata, sp. nov., the last of which was found to be a pseudocryptic species of H. tessellata. Moreover, we identified two species complexes, one composed mainly of specimens from the Western Indian Ocean and another with specimens mostly from the Pacific Ocean and Western Australia.

A taxonomic study of the Hymenasplenium unilaterale subclade (Aspleniaceae) is presented based on morphological and molecular evidence. Twelve species are recognized, nine of which are described as new. The nine new species include H. kinabaluense, H. solomonense, H. madagascariense, H. nigricostatum, H. neocaledonicum, H. oligosorum, H. queenslandicum, H. samoaense, and H. vanuatuense. Of the 12 species recognized, one occurs in Malaysia, East Africa, and Reunion, one in southern Vietnam, and the rest restricted to 1–2 islands of the Indian Ocean or the Pacific Ocean. These new species have been erroneously treated as H. unilaterale by earlier pteridologists. All species were included in a recent phylogenetic analysis and supported as distinct lineages based on molecular data. A key to the species and information on their distributions, habitats, and major distinguishing characters are provided.

Upeneus stenopsis n. sp. is described based on four specimens collected off northern Australia and Quezon Island,Philippines, at depths between 165 to 275 m and compared with four closely related species: the deep-water dwellingUpeneus davidaromi (Red Sea) and U. mascareinsis (Western Indian Ocean) and the shallow Indo-West Pacific species,U. subvittatus and U. vittatus. The new species can be distinguished from all other Upeneus species by a narrow caudalpeduncle and a combination of morphometric and meristic characters. This is the first record of a deep-water goatfish ofthe genus Upeneus from the Pacific. A juvenile Upeneus collected off Quezon at 127–142 m depth was also assigned tothe new species and compared to four similar-sized (69–79 mm SL) specimens of U. mascareinsis. A diagnosis is providedfor U. subvittatus, along with evidence of its occurrence in the Eastern Indian Ocean and interspecific comparisons. Thecontinued need to screen scientific fish collections for the occurrence of undescribed species that have successfully colonized and adapted to the depth zone surrounding the ocean margin is outlined.

A new species of Hyalascus is described from the submarine volcanic crater seamount of Andaman Back-arc Basin, Indian Ocean. The genus was previously known in the Pacific Ocean only.

The genus Trimma contains 17 nominal and 13 valid species. Five of these are here reported from the Chagos Archipelago: T. eviotops, T. macrophthalma, T. mendelssohni. T. nauclei, and T. taylori. An additional 7 species arc described as new and another is described but not named, for a total of 13 species known from these islands. The biogeographic affinities of Chagos species of Trimma appear to lie with the western Indian Ocean rather than the western Pacific, but the evidence is weak because of the lack of knowledge of the Pacific Trimma fauna.

Although cone snails are among the most studied group of gastropods, new species are still regularly described. Here, we focus on Afonsoconus Tucker & Tenorio, 2013, a lineage that includes only two species from the Indo-Pacific Ocean. The analysis of molecular (partial mitochondrial cox1 gene sequences) and morphological (shell and radular tooth) characters revealed that the samples collected by dredging in deep water during a recent expedition carried out in the Mozambique Channel are different from the samples collected in the Pacific Ocean. We thus introduce here a new species, Afonsoconus crosnieri sp. nov., from the SW Indian Ocean including records from the Mozambique Channel, the Comoros and Glorieuses Islands, Madagascar, South Africa and Reunion Island.

A new species of swimming crab, Laleonectes kuriya, is described from the western Indian Ocean (Réunion and southwestern India). The new species is morphologically most similar to the Pacific species, L. nipponensis (Sakai, 1938), but differs primarily in the relative length of the ambulatory legs, as well as in the shape of the malesixth pleomere and the form of the first and second male pleopods.

A new pseudocryptic species of fiddler crab,Tubucaalcockisp. n., is described from the northern Indian Ocean. The new species was previously identified withT.urvillei(H. Milne Edwards, 1852), but can be distinguished by the structures of the anterolateral angle of the carapace and male first gonopod. The molecular data of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene shows that both are sister taxa and the divergence time is estimated at 2.2 million years ago, around the beginning of the Pleistocene. While the new species is widely distributed in the northern part of Indian Ocean, occurring from the Red Sea to India and the Andaman Sea;T.urvilleisensu stricto has a more restricted range, and is known only from southeastern Africa.

The marine ascomycete Dryosphaera tropicalis Kohlm. & Volkm.-Kohlm., sp.nov., is described from the Caribbean (Tobago), the Indian Ocean (Sri Lanka, Thailand), and the Pacific Ocean (Hawaiian Islands: Hawaii, Kauai, Maui, and Molokai). The new species occurs on intertidal and supratidal wood on sandy beaches. It is compared with the type species, Dryosphaera navigans from temperate waters, and differs mainly by ascospore dimensions and appendages. Key words: arenicolous fungi, ascomycetes, Dryosphaera, marine fungi, tropics.

Numerous specimens of squat lobsters belonging to the families Munididae, Munidopsidae and Eumunididae were collected during several cruises along the eastern coasts of Africa. The study of these specimens revealed the presence of 10 new species (one Eumunida Smith, 1883, eight Munida Leach, 1820 and one Munidopsis Whiteaves, 1874). We describe and illustrate these new species, providing some new data on occurrences and colour patterns for previously described taxa. We have also included molecular data from two mitochondrial markers (16S rRNA and COI) to support the taxonomic status of different species. Some deep-sea species show a clear increase in their geographic range distribution. Finally, a key to known species of the genus Munida from the western and central Indian Ocean is also presented.

The sponge genus Strongylodesma is reviewed and redefined, and now accommodates eight closely related species. The type species of Strongylodesma Lévi is redescribed and an additional two new species are described from the Indo-Pacific: S. novaecaledoniae sp. nov. and S. tongaensis sp. nov. Several specimens previously identified as species of Batzella (Poecilosclerida: Chondropsidae) have been re-assigned to Strongylodesma, as the new species S. purpureus sp. nov. and S. nigra sp. nov. With the description here of new species from the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Atlantic, the biogeographical distribution of Strongylodesma now appears to be generally tropical with a subtropical South African component, whereas previously it was only known from South Africa. Although species of Strongylodesma have not previously been recorded from the intermediate locations (Western Indian Ocean, South-east Asia, central west Pacific, and New Zealand), re-evaluation here will facilitate more readily the recognition of taxa in these intermediate regions, if they exist, in the future. The species are not widespread, except perhaps along the south-east coast of South Africa, and where they occur they are not abundant. Species occur over a wide depth range, from the intertidal in Tsitsikamma, South Africa, to 140 m in the Caribbean.
