The Drosophilidae (Diptera) of Iron Range, Queensland.

A collection made in the rainforests of Iron Range. far north Queensland, in May 1981 yielded 54 species of Drosophilidae in the genera Drosophila (34 species, six described as new; first Australian record for D. menisigra Bachli), Liodrosophila (three species). Sphaerogastrella (one species), Zygothrica (one species), Nesiodrosophila (two species, both new). Microdrosophila (three species), Mycodrosophila (seven species, three new), Paramycodrosophila (one new species) and Leucophenga (two species). Seventy-six described species of Drosophilidae have now been recorded at Iron Range, and several further species are known to exist; a key to these species is provided. The 12 new species described in this paper bring the Australian drosophilid total to 234.

In recent decades, major advances in the systematics of the Western Hemisphere genus Paracloeodes Day have been made in South America. Despite the taxonomic progress, uncertainties in identification remain due to the morphological similarities among some nymphs and due to the general lack of knowledge of the imago stages (only 4 of 20 are described from throughout the range of the genus). This study addresses these impediments in part through description of the male imagoes of six species (P. atroari Nieto & Salles, P. binodulus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, P. ibicui Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, P. pacawara Nieto & Salles, P. peri Nieto & Salles, P. waimiri Nieto & Salles), description of two new species based on morphologically distinct nymphs (P. aristotelesi sp. n. and P. carolinae sp. n.), description of one new species based on morphologically distinct nymph and male imago (P. prismatobranchus sp. n.); redescription of three species based on type material (P. ibicui Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, P. leptobranchus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty and P. eurybranchus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty); proposal of one new synonym based on morphological analyses of specimens from Bolivia, Brazil and Uruguay, including type specimens (P. pacawara = P. morellii Emmerich & Nieto); and the presentation of a new key to identify nymphs from South America to the species level.

Abstract The cosmopolitan Ganoderma is an important pathogen on arboreal plant hosts. Ganoderma is particularly diverse in tropical and temperate regions. It has long been used as traditional medicine because of its beneficial medicinal properties and chemical constituents. In this study, Ganoderma collections were made in tropical regions of Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and temperate Yunnan Province, China. The specimens are described based on micro-macro characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of combined ITS, LSU, TEF1α, and RPB2 sequence data. In this comprehensive study, we report 22 Ganoderma species from temperate and tropical regions of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), namely G. adspersum , G. applanatum , G. australe , G. calidophilum , G. ellipsoideum , G. flexipes , G. gibbosum , G. heohnelianum , G. hochiminhense , G. leucocontextum , G. lingzhi , G. lucidum , G. multiplicatum , G. multipileum , G. myanmarens e , G. orbiforme , G. philippii , G. resinaceum , G. sinense , G. subresinosum , G. williamsianum , and G. tsugae . Of these species, 12 were collected from Yunnan Province, China; three species, were collected from Laos; three species, 2 new records, and one new species were collected from Myanmar; 15 species, and four new records were collected from Thailand; and one new species was collected from Vietnam. Comprehensive descriptions, color photographs of macro and micro characteristics, the distribution of Ganoderma in the GMS and worldwide, and a phylogenetic tree showing the placement of all the Ganoderma reported from the GMS are provided.

In order to improve knowledge of Trichoptera diversity in Northeast Region, Brazil, we present here the first checklist of caddisflies from Maranhão State with a description of a new species and geographical records for the Northeast Region and for all of Brazil. Collections were made in 16 sites distributed in three municipalities of Maranhão State. A total of 54 caddisflies species, 26 genera and 10 families were recorded, including one new species of Leptoceridae, Triplectides maranhensis sp. nov., which is described and illustrated. All species listed here are recorded for the first time for the state, 23 of which are new records for the Northeast Region, as well as five new species for Brazil. These results increase the number of species reported from the Northeast Region from 167 to 221.

The Holarctic weevil genus Procas Stephens, 1831 is revised for the first time. Six species are recognized: four in the western Palaearctic Region, one in the eastern Palaearctic Region and one in the Nearctic Region. One new species, P. michaelis, sp. n. is described from Spain and one new subspecies, P. picipes levantinus, ssp. n. is described from the Levant. P. picipes (Marsham, 1802), sp. rev. and P. p. steveni (Gyllenhal, 1835), ssp. rev. are released from synonymy with P. armillatus (Fabricius, 1801). The species are separated using, among others, characters derived from sternite 8 of the male which is here used at species level for the first time.        Related genera are discussed. Notodermus Desbrochers, 1875, gen. rev. and Apachiscelus Desbrochers, 1875, gen. rev. are released from synonymy with Procas. Pseudypera Voss, 1936, is returned to synonymy with Notodermus (stat. rev.). Syrdariellia Ter-Minassian, 1978 = Theanellus Reitter, 1912, syn. n. Hypera siccensis (Normand, 1951), comb. n. (ex Procas) = H. pollux (Fabricius, 1796), syn. n. Procas cottyi Perris, 1864 = P. armillatus (Fabricius, 1801), syn. rev. The following new combinations are made in Theanellus: T. alepensis (Pic), comb. n. (ex Procas); T. alternans (Faust, 1885), comb. n. (ex Procas); T. testaceus (Bajtenov, 1974), comb. n. (ex Procas); T. antoinei (Hustache, 1932), comb. n. (ex Procas); T. fastidiosus (Pic, 1904b), comb. n. (ex Procas).        The relationships of the taxa are shown in a simple dendrogram, together with their habitats which vary from very wet to very dry.

Nomenclatural changes are made in three previously described genera in the planthopper tribe Hemisphaeriini (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Issidae: Issinae), viz Gergithus Stål, 1870, Mongoliana Distant, 1909 and Hemisphaeroides Melichar, 1903. In addition, a new genus, Gnezdilovius gen. nov., with Gergithus lineatus Kato, 1933 as its type species, is described for 40 species formerly included in Gergithus, and the generic characteristics of the latter genus is revised. One new species, Gergithus frontilongus sp. nov. from China (Yunnan), is described and illustrated. One additional Gergithus species, previously misidentified as G. signatifrons Melichar, 1906 from Siberut Island, is mentioned and illustrated. Gergithus contusus Walker, 1851 is transferred to Mongoliana and Hemisphaerius atromaculatus Distant, 1916 and H. fuscoclypeatus Distant, 1916 are transferred to Hemisphaeroides. Checklists for all four genera are provided detailing the nomenclatural changes and a key to the 19 genera of Hemisphaeriini is provided. Morphological diversity and distribution of the genera are briefly discussed.

Twenty-one collections of larvae and pupae from Bromeliads, growing in trees or on the ground, were made in São Salvador, the capital of the State of Bahia, Brazil. Four species of Microculex and one Sabethine were bred out. Of these, one new species and certain new forms are described. The new species is called Culex (Microculex) davisi in honour of Dr. Nelson C. Davis, at whose suggestion this study was first undertaken. Since no Aëdes (Stegomyia) aegypti were found, it would appear that Bromeliad breeding is probably of no importance from the standpoint of a yellow fever control campaign in this region.

As a result of study of 18 samples, collected in Lake Teletskoye and inflowing rivers in 1992–1995, 34 diatom species of the genus Navicula Bory were found. Among them 21 taxa are new for the studied region, 7 species (Navicula arkona, N. hangaica, N. cf. pseudoreinhardtii, N. ricardae, N. scaniae, N. schweigeri, N. suecicarum) are recorded for the first time in Russia. One new species (N. pseudoharmoniae sp. nov.) is described. It is compared with N. harmoniae and N. digitoconvergens.

The results of floristic classification of technogenic vegetation (alliance Chamerio angustifolii–Matricarion hookeri A. Ishbirdin et al. 1996, order Chamerio–Betuletalia nanae Khusainov et al. in Sumina 2012, class Matricario–Poetea arcticae A. Ishbirdin in Sumina 2012) conducted by the Braun-Blanquet method (Braun-Blanquet, 1964; Mirkin, Naumova, 1998) are given. 98 geobotanical relevés, made in 1981–2013 on areas of oil fields and suburbs of the Usinsk city (Komi Republic) (56–60о N, 67–66о E), were involved into analysis (Fig. 1). The ecological parameters like moisture (F) and mineral nitrogen soil enrichment (N) were assessed using the Ellenberg ecological scales (Ellenberg, 1974).

The genus Abaxitrella Gorochov, 2002 is recorded from China for the first time. Abaxitrella uncinata sp. nov. is discovered in the Chinese province Fujian; its description and illustrations as well as a key to Abaxitrella species are given.
