Abstract In this paper, we address the system evaluation issue for commercial term extraction tools from the users’ perspective. We first revisit the gold standard approach commonly practised among researchers, and discuss the challenges it may pose on end users, taking translators as a typical example. Considering the very different motivations and needs of users and researchers, a user-driven approach is proposed as a variation and alternative to the gold standard approach to allow users to assess and understand the performance of commercial tools more objectively. Its feasibility and usefulness are demonstrated by deploying a benchmarking dataset of English-Chinese financial terms, produced by multiple annotators, in a case study with SDL MultiTerm Extract. The results also provide insight for future development of term extractors designed for translators, which will hopefully generate more accurate candidates, offer more customised features, enable better user experience, and enjoy wider popularity as a computer-aided translation tool.

This chapter investigates the potential for new forms of social and civic interaction to be enabled when the notion of the public good is economically and philosophically applied to locative media. It also explores the possible forms that interactive digital technologies might take when embedded within shared public spaces. This is achieved using a multisited ethnographic approach to a case study of Quartier des Spectacles, a digital urban infrastructure in Montreal Canada. The authors argue that insofar as Quartier des Spectacles has successfully prioritized social over private returns, it provides a useful model for the future development of digital public infrastructures, which both closes the gap between top-down and bottom up approaches to interactive technology design, and more effectively meets the needs of end users.

AbstractWhile the construction of knowledge hubs has gained recent traction, little is known on how networked actors perceive their collective culture. Authors looked at the topic through a single case study, the Design Factory Global Network, a network of 24 autonomous yet connected hubs for passion-based co- creation in an educational setting. Data was collected via questionnaires, asking 1) to describe their Design Factory in three distinct, words, 2) explicate these with exemplary stories, and 3) express future development wishes. 98 stories and future wishes were shared by representatives from 15 Design Factories. Excerpts reflecting cultural levels (attitudes, norms, manifestations) were identified and made sense of by looking at which level of stakeholder relationship (internal, host, network, wider environment) they targeted. 78 attitudes, 114 norms and 95 manifestations were mentioned, mostly targeting the internal community and the host levels. Authors draw some practical implications for each of the identified level or relationship, contributing to the knowledge of the creation and development of such innovation hubs. In addition, further research directions are proposed.

In this paper we review the current state of automated MEMS synthesis with a focus on generative methods. We use the design of a MEMS resonator as a case study and explore the role that geometric constraints and human interaction play in a computer-aided MEMS design system based on genetic algorithms.
