Composition of plankton communities in two ponds at African Regional Agriculture Centre (ARAC) Aluu, Port Harcourt was undertaken between May and June 2004, to assess the composition, relative abundance and distribution of plankton. The diversity of plankton was poor. Twenty-eight taxa representing four (4) families were recorded for phytoplankton while seventeen taxa representing four families were identified for zooplankton. Chlorophyta and Cladocera were the most dominant classes in phytoplankton and zooplankton in terms of abundance, constitute 13.0% and 17.1% respectively. The water quality of the ponds is evident by high temperature (28.80C), depth (57.5cm), transparency (42), dissolved oxygen (4.9mg/l) and low BOD of (1.4mg/l). The lower density of organisms could be partly attributed due to heavy rainfall which destabilize the surface water and substrate. Hence, extensive studies of the ponds where aquatic organisms are kept should be carried out to maintain proper utilization of ponds.KEYWORDS: Plankton, composition, communities richness, abundance.

AbstractOligochaeta samples were collected from seven lakes (2 natural and 5 non-natural) of Ceyhan River basin during the summer and autumn seasons of 2014. The Ceyhan River basin is located in the south-eastern Anatolia region in Turkey. Lakes Gölbaşı and Azaplı are located in a protected area. Some physico-chemical parameters of surface water were measured in situ. Sampling for oligochaetes was conducted by using both hand-nets and an Ekman Birge grab sampler, with samples obtained from different depths. Oligochaetes represented the dominant group of the total benthic macroinvertebrates in samples, with the exception of samples collected from Ayvalı Dam lake. A total of 11,293 oligochaete specimens were sorted from samples collected from these lakes, from which 14 species belonging to 2 subfamilies (Naidinae and Tubificinae) were identified.

AbstractThe physico-chemical parameters, plankton and macro-benthic invertebrates of the Lagos Lagoon (Badore, Ajah), Lagos State, Nigeria were studied between February and July 2018 at four sampling stations in a disparate range of human activities and impact. The result of phytoplankton analysis indicated a total of 56 genera with 40 genera within Bacillariophyta, accounting for 72% of the abundance. Zooplankton comprised 26 genera with 82% of the abundance of crustacea. The benthic macroinvertebrates were composed of mollusca, arthropoda and annelida. Results also indicated that the main drivers affecting the abundance and distribution of planktonic and benthic invertebrates were water temperature, pH, TDS and EC. The monthly variations of physico-chemical parameters in the Lagoon could be the result of human activities associated with transportation, fishing and domestic sewage disposal from the surrounding settlements. Therefore, it is necessary that relevant authorities keep in check some of these activities around the Lagoon as well as educate the population on the necessity for the conservation of these water resources.

Research results define basis for specific monitoring programs of gro-undwater quality in wetland eco-systems in Serbia and Croatia. The main pur-pose of the research was to determine the impact of nonpoint diffuse source pollution on the groundwater quality, as well as seasonal variations on the con-centration levels of selected physico-chemical parameters. Statistical analyses, PCA, HCA, ANOVA and t-test, encompass 18 monitored parameters in ground-water. Statistical data indicated that protected area in Serbia has a significantly higher load of pollution from agricultural activities compared to Wetlands Tompojevci. The highest load in groundwater was detected from total nitrogen, ammonia and nitrogen anions, indicating contamination of groundwater by nitrogen-based fertilizers. The results obtained within the two-year seasonal monitoring program, from 2018 to 2020, are highly essential for achieving a comprehensive database that could be used as platform for high-quality groundwater management in selected protected areas with the aim of minimizing environmental pollution.
