Life history models of parental care predict that parents should adjust their level of defense to reflect the increasing value of current offspring relative to their own expected future reproduction. This field study examined the effects of the developmental stage of offspring on patterns of brood defense in parental male smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui). Conspecific models of equal length (±1 cm) were used to elicit two defense behaviours: bite and jaw display (a threat display). Parental defense increased as offspring progressed from egg to wriggler (hatched embryos) stages, and peaked before fry "swim-up" from the nest. Parental defense decreased after swim-up. This pattern of brood defense conforms with the life history model of parental care through a brood cycle. Four alternative hypotheses to the life history model are discussed (habituation to the model, nest conspicuousness, food value of offspring, and repeated success in nest defense); each is inadequate in accounting for the observed patterns in defense over the brood cycle.

AbstractThe life history of Chrysomela crotchi, a univoltine species commonly found on trembling aspen, was studied in northwestern Ontario from 1959 to 1962. The most striking feature of its life history was the longevity of adults, which were capable of overwintering two successive years. Overwintered adults became active and began feeding in late May, and oviposition occurred from early June to late July. The incubation period was approximately 10 days and the three larval instars required approximately one month for development to the adult stage.Females laid more eggs during their second season and the highest number laid was 326. The number of eggs in an egg mass averaged 37.6, and the average interval between the deposition of egg masses was 4 days. Males and females mated more than once, but only one mating was necessary for a female to produce viable eggs throughout the season. Males were capable of fertilizing more than one female and remained potent for more than one season.Parasitism was low, and only two species of larval parasites were reared. Several predator species were observed preying on the immature stages. Predation and overwintering mortality appeared to be the most important control factors.

Models of potential brood predators placed near the nest were used to elicit defence behaviour in male smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) in the field. The three predator models represented a conspecific, a species found in the lake (yellow perch, Perca flavescens), and a species not present in the lake (brown bullhead, Ictalurus nebulosus). Aggressive behaviour increased with brood age and with decreasing distance between model and nest. Brood-guarding smallmouth bass exhibited a generalized response to the three predator models and did not discriminate between them by altering levels of aggression.

White perch (Morone americana), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), and smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) were acclimated to 5 and 20 °C. There was an increase in ventricle mass relative to body mass in smallmouth bass only following acclimation to 5° C. Maximal in vitro activities of hexokinase, citrate synthase, carnitine acyl CoA transferase (with palmitoyl CoA, palmitoleoyl CoA, and oleoyl CoA as substrates), and total ATPase were assessed in crude heart homogenates. Tissues removed from warm-acclimated animals were tested at 20 and 5 °C; tissues removed from cold-acclimated animals were assessed at 5 °C. Acute temperature transitions were associated with decreases in the activities of hexokinase (Q10 ≈ 1.8), citrate synthase (Q10 ≈ 1.4), and ATPase (Q10 ≈ 1.7). The impact of temperature on carnitine acyl CoA transferases was generally less severe. This suggests that maximal fatty acid oxidation is conserved better than glucose oxidation during a warm to cold transition. Maximal enzyme activities were generally unaffected by the acclimation regime, with the exception of that of carnitine acyl CoA transferase in white perch heart. The substantial increase in carnitine acyl CoA transferase activity when unsaturated CoA derivatives were provided as substrate suggests an increased capacity to oxidize unsaturated fatty acids at low temperature following an acclimation period. Attempts to sustantiate this contention by offering labelled oleic acid to ventricle sheets were thwarted by a high rate of incorporation into the total lipid pool.

Creel survey and independent assessment data on the lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) populations of Lake Opeongo were evaluated. Annual estimates of total mortality, fishing mortality, and abundance were generated for each population over the period 1936–83. Large variations in survey efficiency, angler efficiency, fishing mortality, and abundance were identified over this period. We argue that a creel survey, which is expected to provide reliable information on fish population dynamics, requires an overall study design which includes collection of data on the number and relative efficiency of different kinds of anglers and periodic assessment studies aimed at providing independent checks on both survey effectiveness and population behaviour.
