This chapter introduces the basic definitions of a glacier and of the glaciosystem (a term coined by the author which refers to the glacier ecosystem). It describes glaciers, and through interactive links, shows the reader glaciers that can be viewed on a smart phone or computer. The chapter also describes the origin and formation of glaciers and their various functions. It introduces the life cycle of a glacier and also explains past and likely future ice ages (or glacial periods) as well as dynamics that may deepen global warming and impede the natural glacial age cycles, including the orbit of the Earth around the sun and its tilt and its relative influence on ice ages.

This chapter focuses on the impacts of glacier melt on our oceans and related sea level rise. It discusses past and present sea levels and the relative influence of the ice age cycles. The chapter also reviews risks posed now to life on Earth due to glacier melt and related sea level rise, considering these in relation to ongoing and new flooding impacting coastal areas. It goes on to discuss the theories of Hot House Earth and Snowball Earth, the likelihood of these scenarios being realized, and the impact of high levels of CO2 concentrations on the likelihood of either eventuality.

<p>Purpose - Globalization has increased competition to an international level. However, limited market experience causes uncertainty, affecting how firms strategize their entry. Institutional distance can be a dominant cause of such environmental uncertainty. The institutional environment incorporates three institutional pillars; the regulatory pillar, the normative pillar and the cognitive pillar. Institutions are shaped by culture and desires to protect domestic business, meaning institutions differ between countries. This is known as institutional distance. There is, however, a research gap concerning the relative influence of institutional pillars on cross-border acquisition ownership, when institutional distance is present. This thesis seeks to research the influential effect of all three institutional pillars on acquisition ownership, when firms are faced with institutional distance.  Theory - Institutional theory was the fundamental theory used in this research, applying the sociology perspective of Scott (1995). Firstly, investigations were conducted on individual pillars to see how each pillar influenced acquisition ownership. Secondly, individual pillar findings were then combined and compared, to illustrate their relative influence on acquisition ownership. Such simultaneous acknowledgement of all three institutional pillars, provided new insight on the relative effects of institutions on acquisition ownership.  Methodology - This study implemented a single method approach, using quantitative analysis. Archival data was gathered focusing on firms from three industries in eleven selected countries who conduct cross-border acquisitions (CBAs). CBAs were chosen due to their popular use as a research construct in imitation research. Cognitive distance, normative distance and regulatory distance were then used to measure institutional distance. Cognitive distance effects were measured using frequency based imitation. Normative distance was measured using two of Hofstede’s (1980) cultural value dimensions: uncertainty avoidance and collectivism. Regulatory distance was measured using World Bank Governance Indicators. Thus, it was important to strategically choose home countries to ensure a variety of dimension and indicator values with which to conduct a reliable study. Logistic regression, conducted with STATA, was then used to analyze relationships between institutions and acquisition ownership.  Key Findings – The findings illustrate that all three institutional pillars have an influential effect on acquisition ownership decisions. This reinforces the emerging belief, that studies must include all three institutional pillars in research. This finding adds to this scant research. Analyzing the comprehensive institutional environment produces more reliable results.  The findings suggest that institutional pillars form an institutional hierarchy when institutional distance exists between the home and host countries. Regulatory distance have the strongest influence on acquisition ownership. Severe regulatory sanctions threaten illegitimate behaviours, forcing foreign entrants to prioritize compliance to regulatory institutions. Normative distance has the second strongest impact on acquisition ownership. Its tacit nature camouflages dysfunctional cultural complexities that disrupt strategy implementation, which can cause a firm to relocate. Lastly, cognitive distance has the third strongest influence on acquisition ownership. Its lack of severe repercussions facilitates the prioritization of the previous two pillars. However, cognitive distance acknowledgement is important as it illustrates how host participants interpret stimuli from their environment, which informs foreign entrants of appropriate cross-national responsive behaviour.  Contributions - This study contributes to international business research by illustrating the hierarchical formation of the influence of institutional pillars on cross-border acquisition ownership, where institutional distance is present. This contribution has managerial implications. Managers are strongly encouraged to consider all of regulatory pillar, normative pillar and cognitive pillar when venturing abroad. Further, managers must acknowledge the institutional pillar hierarchy and prioritize responses accordingly, to avoid crippling outcomes that could lead to poor acquisition outcomes. Lastly, this thesis contributes to literature by highlighting the need to include collectivism as a research construct in ownership studies. Prior studies have narrowly focused on uncertainty avoidance and power distance. However, collectivism has been observed to influence ownership, likely due to the recent rise of Asia in international business.</p>

The present paper explored the fate of previously formed response-outcome associations when the relation between R and O was disrupted by arranging for O to occur independently of R. In each of three experiments response independent outcome delivery selectively reduced the R earning that O. Nevertheless, in Experiments 1 and 2, the R continued to show sensitivity to outcome devaluation, suggesting that the strength of the R-O association was undiminished by this treatment. These experiments used a two-lever, two-outcome design introducing the possibility that devaluation reflected the influence of specific Pavlovian lever-outcome associations. In an attempt to nullify these incidental Pavlovian cues, Experiment 3 used a single bidirectional vertical lever that rats could press left or right for different outcomes. Again, response-independent outcome presentation selectively depressed the performance of the R that delivered the response-independent O. However, in this situation, the response independent O also reduced the sensitivity of R to outcome devaluation; whereas the non-degraded R was sensitive to devaluation, the degraded R was not. We conclude that selective degradation of the instrumental contingency can weaken a specific R-O association while leaving other R-O associations intact. Furthermore, the use of a bidirectional vertical lever in Experiment 3 revealed that instrumental manipulanda, such as levers or chains, produce Pavlovian cues capable of forming incidental associations with the instrumental outcome, obscuring the relative influence of R-O associations after various manipulations.

Background: Over the past decade, research has attempted to elucidate the cause of throwing-related injuries in the baseball athlete. However, when considering the entire kinetic chain, full body mechanics, and pitching cycle sequencing, there are hundreds of variables that could influence throwing arm health, and there is a lack of quality investigations evaluating the relationship and influence of multiple variables on arm stress. Purpose: To identify which variables have the most influence on elbow valgus torque and shoulder distraction force using a statistical model and a machine learning approach. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A retrospective review was performed on baseball pitchers who underwent biomechanical evaluation at the university biomechanics laboratory. Regression models and 4 machine learning models were created for both elbow valgus torque and shoulder distraction force. All models utilized the same predictor variables, which included pitch velocity and 17 pitching mechanics. Results: The analysis included a total of 168 high school and collegiate pitchers with a mean age of 16.7 years (SD, 3.2 years) and BMI of 24.4 (SD, 1.2). For both elbow valgus torque and shoulder distraction force, the gradient boosting machine models demonstrated the smallest root mean square errors and the most precise calibrations compared with all other models. The gradient boosting model for elbow valgus torque reported the highest influence for pitch velocity (relative influence, 28.4), with 5 mechanical variables also having significant influence. The gradient boosting model for shoulder distraction force reported the highest influence for pitch velocity (relative influence, 20.4), with 6 mechanical variables also having significant influence. Conclusion: The gradient boosting machine learning model demonstrated the best overall predictive performance for both elbow valgus torque and shoulder distraction force. Pitch velocity was the most influential variable in both models. However, both models also revealed that pitching mechanics, including maximum humeral rotation velocity, shoulder abduction at foot strike, and maximum shoulder external rotation, significantly influenced both elbow and shoulder stress. Clinical Relevance: The results of this study can be used to inform players, coaches, and clinicians on specific mechanical variables that may be optimized to mitigate elbow or shoulder stress that could lead to throwing-related injury.

Abstract The assembly processes that underlie the composition and connectivity of free-living (FL) and particle-associated (PA) bacterial communities from surface to deep waters remain little understood. Here, using phylogenetic null modeling, we quantify the relative influence of selective and stochastic mechanisms that assemble FL and PA bacterial communities throughout the water column in a high Arctic fjord. We demonstrate that assembly processes acting on FL and PA are similar in surface waters, but become increasingly distinct in deep waters. As depth increases, the relative influence of homogeneous selection increases for FL but decreases for PA communities. In addition, dispersal limitation and variable selection increases with depth for PA, but not for FL communities, indicating increased residence time of taxa on particles and less frequent decolonization. As a consequence, beta-diversity of PA communities is greater in bottom than in surface waters. The limited connectivity between FL and PA communities with increasing depth leads to highly distinct FL and PA communities in bottom waters. Finally, depth-related trends for FL and PA beta diversity and connectivity in this study are consistent with previous observations in the open ocean, suggesting that assembly processes for FL and PA may also be distinct in other aquatic environments.
