The late Professor Michael Evenari was a leader and agreat scientist with a very wide view and varied interests. Throughout the 26 years that I studied desert plants with Professor Evenari in the deserts of Israel and the Sinai Peninsula, he liked to summarize the seasonal field observations of seedling emergence with the words, “this particular year is a very special year.” What are the reasons for such species' diversity, and what are the survival strategies of desert annuals'? Some species are common and others emerge only once in several years under unpredictable seasonal precipitation and massive seed consumption by ants. Escape dispersal strategies after maturation of the tiny, long-living seeds, and partial “opportunistic” germination strategies after only 10 mm of rain, are found in some common annuals such as Schismus arabicus and Spergularia diandra. Day lengthing seed maturation, and light and temperatures during seed wetting and germination, also affect their germinability. In S. diandra, nine types of seeds have been found (3 genotypes and 3 color phenotypes), which differ in coat structure, color, and germinability, and in Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum a position effect was found (3 groups of seeds in a capsule). The more opportunities for a small portion of seeds from the seed bank to germinate after several rainfalls, the greater the chances to germinate at suitable rain distribution. This enables these plants to develop and produce large numbers of seeds, even after a number of small rainfalls.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of the order in which a set of cities are visited to ascertain the effects of position on group tourists’ recall and evaluations. Design/methodology/approach Using a questionnaire, the views of highly experienced tour guides were analysed to provide preliminary insights about the likely occurrence of position effects. The topic was studied in Iran where a natural variation in the order of visiting cities on guided tours exists. Findings Credible and consistent evidence was found for the perceived effects of recency when considering tourists’ recall and evaluations. In particular, the influence was seen as clearly enhancing the recall and positive evaluation for the most high profile cities in the set of visited locations. Research limitations/implications Replications of the position effect in other countries and for other kinds of tourism cities needs to be pursued, desirably by direct assessments of tourist’ views to buttress the present views held by guides. Practical implications Designing itineraries by making imaginative use of the effects of order on the tourists’ sequence of city visits should facilitate the memorability of destinations for tourists and benefit businesses. Originality/value Empirical evidence about order effects in multi-city tour itineraries has never been established. The study provides foundation evidence for such influences through a non-reactive and naturalistic assessment by tour guides who are in contact with varied itineraries and who regularly consider the experiences of diverse and large numbers of tourists.

Abstract Many studies have been done on the relationship between variation in morphology, dispersal ability and degree of dormancy of heterocarpic species with dimorphic diaspores. However, there are far fewer such studies on species that produce trimorphic diaspores. Our aim was to compare dormancy and germination of achenes from peripheral, intermediate and central positions in the capitulum of the diaspore-trimorphic cold desert annual Asteraceae species Heteracia szovitsii, an important component of plant communities in the cold deserts of NW China. Dormancy breaking/germination responses of the three achene morphs and of seeds isolated from the pericarp were tested in the laboratory using standard procedures, and seedling emergence phenology of the achene morphs was monitored under natural cold desert temperature conditions in an experimental garden with and without supplemental watering. Depth of dormancy of the three achene morphs was peripheral > intermediate > central. Seedlings from the three morphs emerged in spring and in autumn. Cumulative seedling emergence percentage from achenes during 47 months of burial was central > intermediate > peripheral. Central achene morphs emerged over a period of ~12 months after sowing, while intermediate and peripheral achene morphs did so for ~40 and 47 months, respectively. Thus, H. szovitsii exhibits a temporal dispersal strategy. No viable central or intermediate achene morphs were present after 16 and 40 months, respectively, but ~60 % of the non-emerged peripheral achenes morphs were viable after 47 months. Based on our results on diaspore dormancy and those of a previous study of diaspore spatial dispersal of H. szovitsii, we conclude that this species has a high–intermediate–low risk diaspore dispersal/dormancy strategy that likely increases the chances for population persistence over time and space.

Seedling emergence and survival to flowering are critical processes in the life history of annual plants. We evaluated the importance of year and habitat on seedling emergence and the effects of year, habitat, timing of seedling emergence, and seedling density on survival of Warea carteri Small, an annual mustard endemic to Florida scrub. We tagged 1329 seedlings in 78 permanent 0.25 m2 quadrats in two habitats (scrub and disturbed) between 1999 and 2002 and followed seedlings monthly. Most (>80%) seedling emergence occurred between September and December. Emergence peaked 2 months earlier and was more variable in disturbed sites than in scrub. Seedling survival among years ranged from 3.5% to 12.0%. Seedling density varied from 1 to 75 per 0.25 m2 quadrat, with an overall median of 6.0. Survival was not density dependent. Median age at flowering ranged from 11.7 to 15.2 months, with late season recruits most likely to survive to flowering. Warea carteri recruits like a winter annual but flowers like a summer annual. Its delayed germination and a 12–15 month life span contribute to population cycling. Complete reproductive failure in unfavorable years, high seed production in favorable years, low rates of seed germination, and a persistent seed bank are consistent with predictions for an annual species in a variable habitat.
