The effect of color shading-nets (red net, blue net and silver net) and ordinary black net on plant growth and nutrient uptake of flowering Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis var. utilis Tsen et Lee) were studied, with no net shading as the control. The results indicated that, compared with the control, red net covering increased plant height, leaf area and stem diameter of flowering Chinese cabbage. Red and blue nets covering enhanced the above ground fresh weight, while the silver and black nets covering decreased the above ground fresh weight. Shading net covering significantly improved the nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) content of flowering Chinese cabbage, while it had no significant effect on the phosphorus (P) content. Red and blue nets covering enhanced mineral nutrients uptake, while it was decreased under silver and black nets covering. Red and blue nets covering promoted plant growth and nutrients uptake of flowering Chinese cabbage and could be widely applied in leaf vegetable production.

Intensity and spectral quality of the radiation can be manipulated with the use of neutral or color shading screens in growing plants, and it can promote physiological and morphological changes. Therefore, the purpose was evaluating the effects of different shading levels, screens spectral quality, and spacing in the development of cv. Jungle King and cv. Jungle Queen gingers. Rhizomes were planted in 5 cultivation environments (full sun, black screen 50%, black screen 30%, blue screen 50% and red screen 50% shading) and 2 spacing (0.8 x 1.0 m and 0.8 x 1.5 m). The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial 5x2x2x7, with 5 environments of cultivation, 2 cultivars, 2 spacing between plants and 7 times of evaluation (55, 120, 200, 255, 285, 335 e 370 days after planting (DAP)). The evaluations were shooting index, number of shoots per plant, shoot height and number of leaves per shoot. Shooting of cv. Jungle Queen was earlier compared to cv. Jungle King. Spacing did not influence in the initial development of plants. Screens with 50% shading, in blue or red colors, enhanced alpinia development.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate various cues on a background display format that depicted attitude information. A combined head-down display format was evaluated where the central rectangular area focused on tactical information and the background border presented attitude information. The attitude information, in essence, framed the tactical display format. A comparison was conducted among variations of the original background attitude indicator (BAI) created by General Dynamics personnel. Three types of cues were investigated: color shading, color patterns, and pitch lines with numbers. These cues were tested individually and in combination with one another. Results showed that in terms of initial input time, the combination of color shading and color patterns performed the best.

In this paper, we describe a special purpose hardware called ESEU (Expandable Shading Engine Unit) for fast rendering of 3-D scenes using Gouraud shading model. Each ESEU has three major functional blocks: linear interpolator, multipliers and Edge Painting Tree. Linear interpolator with coupled binary tree structure yields the functional values at all pixels within each zone (zone denotes the smallest interval which encompasses the given span and consists of 2n successive pixels in the x-direction, where n is some integer) by interpolating the functional values, such as z-depth values or color intensities, at the left and right end points of the zone which are calculated by the multipliers. Mask pattern for the removal of data for the pixels outside the original span but within the corresponding zone is generated by the Edge Painting Tree. Since there are no interconnections among ESEU’s, graphics system with any screen size can be easily built using a multitude of the prototype ESEU’s. A prototype ESEU in this work handles 64 pixels; therefore, 16 ESEU’s are required for screens having a 1024-pixel width. The bit-serial nature of the prototype ESEU is suitable for its VLSI implementation at a reasonable cost.
