The structural evolution of the Ti40Zr10Cu34Pd14Sn2 bulk metallic glass (BMG) upon was investigated by means of in situ high-energy x-ray diffraction. The position, width, and intensity of the first peak in diffraction patterns are fitted through Voigt function below 800 K. All the peak position, width, and intensity values show a nearly linear increase with the increasing temperature to the onset temperature of structural relaxation, Tr = 510 K. However, these values start to deviate from the linear behavior between Tr and Tg (the glass transition temperature). The changes in free volume and the coefficient of volume thermal expansion prove that the aforementioned phenomenon is closely related to the structural relaxation releasing excess free volume arrested during rapid quenching of the BMG. Above 800 K, three crystallization events are detected and the first exothermic event is due to the formation of metastable nanocrystals.

AbstractEnergy dispersive X-ray diffraction was used to study the structural evolution of a bulk metallic glass (BMG) alloy and its composite with W particles under hydrostatic pressure. The diffraction data, especially the pair distribution function (PDF) of the BMG allowed the direct measurement of its elastic strain. The results suggest that PDF patterns of BMGs can be used to deducetheir strain evolution in composites as well as in monolithic form. Although the PDF method of strain measurement in amorphous alloys offers lower resolution compared to the analysis of Bragg reflections from crystalline materials, the PDF techique yields valuable information about the deformation of BMGs.

Copper segregation in a subsurface layer during annealing of Cu60Zr30Ti10 bulk metallic glass at 773 K under oxygen atmosphere has been investigated by x-ray diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The formation of metallic copper is strongly dependent on the annealing environment. Various oxides with metallic copper are formed after annealing in oxygen atmosphere, but only crystalline intermetallic phases are found under vacuum annealing. Besides, surface characterization results show that the sample annealed in oxygen and vacuum result in enrichment and depletion of Cu on the surface region, respectively.
