The growing applications of iron/copper bimetallic composites in various industries are increasing. The relationship between the properties of these materials and manufacturing parameters should be well understood. This paper represents an experimental study to evaluate the effect of reinforcement (steel rod) preheating temperature on the mechanical properties (bond strength, microhardness, and wear resistance) of copper matrix composites (QMMC). In preparing the QMMC samples, the melted copper was poured on a steel rod that had been preheated to various temperatures, namely, room temperature, 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1200 °C. Properties of the QMMC (interface microstructure, interfacial bonding strength, microhardness, and wear) were investigated. The experimental results revealed that the best bond between the copper matrix and steel rod formed only in the composites prepared by preheating the steel rods with temperatures lower than the recrystallization temperature of steel (723 °C). This is because the oxide layer and shrinkage voids (due to the difference in shrinkage between the two metals) at the interface hinder atom diffusion and bond formation at higher temperatures. The microhardness test showed that preheating steel rod to 600 °C gives the highest value among all the samples. Furthermore, the QMMC’s wear behavior confirmed that the optimization of preheating temperature is 600 °C.

Ultrasonic vibration-composited electrolysis/electro-discharge machining technology (UE/DM) is effective for machining particulate-reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs). However, the vibration of the tool or workpiece suitable for holes limits the application of UE/DM. To improve the generating machining efficiency and quality of flat and curved surfaces, in this study, we implemented two-dimensional ultrasonic vibration into UE/DM and constructed a novel method named two-dimensional ultrasonic vibration-composited electrolysis/electro-discharge machining (2UE/DM). The influence of vibration on the performance of 2UE/DM compared to other process technologies was studied, and an orthogonal experiment was designed to optimize the parameters. The results indicated that the materiel remove rate (MRR) mainly increased via voltage and tool vibration. The change current was responsible for the MRR in the process. Spindle speed and workpiece vibration were not dominant factors affecting the MRR; the spindle speed and tool and workpiece vibration, which reduced the height difference between a ridge and crater caused by abrasive grinding, were responsible for surface roughness (Ra) and form precision (δ). Additionally, the optimized parameters of 1000 rpm, 3 V, and 5 um were conducted on MMCs of 40 SiCp/Al and achieved the maximum MRR and minimum Ra and δ of 0.76 mm3/min, 3.35 um, and 5.84%, respectively. This study’s findings provide valuable process parameters for improving machining efficiency and quality for MMCs of 2UE/DM.

Because of the dilemma that the current industrial Cu enhancement methods lead to a significant decline in conductivity and ductility, Cu matrix composites reinforced by oriented multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared through sintering, hot extrusion, and cold drawing. Before sintering, Ni, Cu, and Ni&Cu coatings were electroless plated on MWCNTs as the intermediate transition layer, and then they were mixed with Cu powder through a nitrogen bubbling assisted ultrasonic process. By analyzing the composition, microstructure, and formation mechanism of the interface between MWCNTs and the matrix, the influence and mechanism of the interface on the mechanical properties, conductivity, and ductility of the composites were explored. The results indicated that MWCNTs maintained a highly dispersed and highly consistent orientation in the Cu matrix. The coating on Ni@CNT was the densest, continuous, and complete. The Ni@CNTs/Cu composite had the greatest effect, while the Cu composite reinforced by MWCNT without coating had the smallest reduction in elongation and conductivity. The comprehensive performance of the Cu@CNTs/Cu composite was the most balanced, with an ultimate tensile strength that reached 373 MPa, while the ductility and conductivity were not excessively reduced. The axial electrical and thermal conductivity were 79.9 IACS % (International Annealed Copper Standard) and 376 W/mK, respectively.

AbstractOxidation behaviors of carbon fiber reinforced SiC matrix composites (C/SiC) are one of the most noteworthy properties. For C/SiC, the oxidation behavior was controlled by matrix microcracks caused by the mismatch of coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) and elastic modulus between carbon fiber and SiC matrix. In order to improve the oxidation resistance, multilayer SiC-Si3N4 matrices were fabricated by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) to alleviate the above two kinds of mismatch and change the local stress distribution. For the oxidation of C/SiC with multilayer matrices, matrix microcracks would be deflected at the transition layer between different layers of multilayer SiC-Si3N4 matrix to lengthen the oxygen diffusion channels, thereby improving the oxidation resistance of C/SiC, especially at 800 and 1000 °C. The strength retention ratio was increased from 61.9% (C/SiC-SiC/SiC) to 75.7% (C/SiC-Si3N4/SiC/SiC) and 67.8% (C/SiC-SiC/Si3N4/SiC) after oxidation at 800 °C for 10 h.

AbstractSince the 1960s, a new class of Si-based advanced ceramics called polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) has been widely reported because of their unique capabilities to produce various ceramic materials (e.g., ceramic fibers, ceramic matrix composites, foams, films, and coatings) and their versatile applications. Particularly, due to their promising structural and functional properties for energy conversion and storage, the applications of PDCs in these fields have attracted much attention in recent years. This review highlights the recent progress in the PDC field with the focus on energy conversion and storage applications. Firstly, a brief introduction of the Si-based polymer-derived ceramics in terms of synthesis, processing, and microstructure characterization is provided, followed by a summary of PDCs used in energy conversion systems (mainly in gas turbine engines), including fundamentals and material issues, ceramic matrix composites, ceramic fibers, thermal and environmental barrier coatings, as well as high-temperature sensors. Subsequently, applications of PDCs in the field of energy storage are reviewed with a strong focus on anode materials for lithium and sodium ion batteries. The possible applications of the PDCs in Li-S batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells are discussed as well. Finally, a summary of the reported applications and perspectives for future research with PDCs are presented.
