Abstract The system of two coupled optical dual-mode waveguides is considered. The coupling of the system is studied to find a circuit for building a control switch for two qubit gates. The classical coupled mode theory is applied and the exact expressions for coupling coefficients are derived. The parameters of the system for performing the desired operations are numerically computed and analysed. The system describing the influence of intermodal interactions is solved numerically. The distortions are analysed.

A new coupled-mode formulation based on scalar modes is developed for the anisotropic optical waveguide. In the new formulation, the birefringence property of the material is represented as additional coupling to the coupling due to the refractive-index perturbations. The theory is applied to the direction coupler made of parallel slab waveguides. The numerical results show that the numerical value of the birefringence coupling correction is around 10% as much as that of the refractive-index perturbation coupling for the special case.

Coupled-mode theory is employed to obtain the threshold gains for oscillation on hybrid modes of a passive-core corrugated-waveguide laser pumped in a central portion of its length. Methods are developed for calculating intermode coupling coefficients and loss coefficients resulting from diffraction into any order of waveguide corrugations of arbitrary shape. Experimental observations that have been reported in the literature are compared with the hybrid-mode threshold gains computed from coupled-mode theory. It is shown that the oscillation frequencies for such a laser are determined by the length of the corrugated structure, the proportion that is pumped, and the effects of coupling into leaky modes.
