Abstract With the development of smart grid and energy internet, energy storage will play an important role in maintaining the power balance and providing frequency regulation in future power system. Consequently, energy storage faces a trade-off problem between the energy market and frequency regulation market. In this work, an operation model and strategy of energy storage to provide frequency regulation is proposed. Taking lithium battery as an example of energy storage, its technical feasibility to provide frequency regulation is firstly discussed. Then, a day-ahead energy market model in the power system is constructed to calculate the revenue of lithium battery. Finally, the operation strategy of lithium battery to provide secondary frequency regulation (namely AGC) is proposed based on the model of opportunity cost. Case study is conducted on a modified IEEE 6-bus system. It shows that the reduced marginal revenue of lithium battery in the energy market increases with the growth of its declared capacity for frequency regulation. Consequently, the optimal declared frequency regulation capacity for lithium battery is the amount, at which the reduced marginal revenue in the energy market is equal to the compensation price of frequency regulation.

This paper applies grounded theory to explore the formation of platform leadership and its reputation through a single case study analysis of a Chinese energy internet platform enterprise CZB (Che Zhu Bang). Initially, CZB was a follower in China’s internet energy market. After clarifying and acquiring the entrepreneurial resources and the complementary assets it needed, CZB quickly established an energy internet platform and its platform leadership in two years. The research shows the mechanism by which the entrepreneurial resources and complementary assets affect the evolution of the platform leadership, the interaction between platform leadership and its reputation, and in the end, how platform reputation influences platform sustainability.

With high levels of wind energy penetration, the frequency response of isolated power systems is more likely to be affected in the event of a sudden frequency disturbance or fluctuating wind conditions. In order to minimize excessive frequency deviations, several techniques and control strategies involving Variable Speed Wind Turbines (VSWTs) have been investigated in isolated power systems. In this paper, the main benefits and disadvantages of introducing VSWTs—both their inertial contribution and primary frequency regulation—in an exclusively renewable isolated power system have been analyzed. Special attention has been paid to the influence of the delays of control signals in the wind farm when VSWTs provide primary regulation as well as to the wind power reserve value which is needed. To achieve this objective, a methodology has been proposed and applied to a case study: El Hierro power system. A mathematical dynamic model of the isolated power system, including exclusively renewable technologies, has been described. Representative generation schedules and wind speed signals have been fixed according to the observed system. Finally, in order to obtain conclusions, realistic system events such as fluctuations in wind speed and the outage of the generation unit with the higher assigned power in the power system have been simulated.
