The article is devoted to the description of the creation of a computer model of the movement of a railway freight car along the section of the track adjacent to the rail joint. The model takes into account the elastic characteristics and ballast subsidence in the joint zone. The results of computer simulation are further used to solve the contact problem in the wheel-rail system. The study varied a number of parameters affecting this process of wheel movement. For the operating speeds of the freight car, the range of values of the dynamic forces arising between the wheel and the rail during the passage of the joint is determined.

To investigate the effect of elasto-damper coupled wheelset (EDCW), on the lateral stability behavior of freight cars, a railway freight truck model with two EDCW and pseudo-car body has been developed. The results of linearized stability analysis showed, that for small values of wheelset coupler stiffness, damping has significant influence on the stability behavior of wheelset relative spin as well as wheelset and truck lateral modes. The results further showed that, by utilizing an optimal EDCW coupler parameter, the critical speeds corresponding to truck hunting and wheelset lateral mode can be made equal. In doing so, the truck hunting critical speed on tangent track can be improved by over 100 percent in comparison to truck model with conventional rigid axle wheelsets.

In this paper, we combine the characteristics of acoustic emission detection with the present condition of truck rolling bearing’s fault detection ,adopting the acoustic emission technique to examine railway freight car ’s journal bearing inner ring looseness .We put forward the method which wavelet packet analyze and withdraw bearing acoustic emission signal’s feature vector. Through the energy distribution comparison of inner ring’s non-looseness and looseness, we extract the ratio between high frequency’s internal energy and total energy as the characteristic parameter , which can recognize the inner ring’s loose fault effectively. Acoustic emission technique is a dynamic detection method, which can get materials’ important information, fatigue crack propagation, under the dynamic loading conditions. In comparison with the traditional vibration detection, it has the characteristics of the early prediction of bearing fault.

The structural strength during static loadings for a carbody of railway container freight car was evaluated to verify the structural strength of newly manufactured carbody. The carbody of freight car was designed with SM490YA steel and stainless steel for the general railway transportation. Prior to the assessment of structural strength, finite element method (FEM) characterization was used for the stress and structural analyses on stress distribution in a carbody of container freight car. The strain gages were attached on the carbody based on the FEM results in order to measure structural strength during static loadings such as vertical and compression loadings. The actual vertical loading test and horizontal compression loading test were conducted, and the results were compared with the previous FEM results. In this investigation, the evaluation method for the structural strength in a structural component has been introduced using several engineering techniques, and experimental and theoretical results were compared.
