Abstract The retirement landscape is transformed by the shifting of risk and responsibility to individuals, who are increasingly responsible for their retirement security. Many factors lead to indebted and overleveraged American households. Specifically, nearly 40% of Americans approaching retirement are heavily indebted. Understanding the role of secured and unsecured debt in retirement planning becomes an urgent concern because debt is highly related to well-being in retirement among a growing number of older Americans. We focus on pre-retirees because these individuals have time to earn an income and plan ahead before they commit to a fully retired lifestyle. Utilizing data from the 2015 National Financial Capability Study, we identified the secured and unsecured debt that influences retirement planning among a national sample of pre-retirees, aged 51 to 61 years. Regression and mediation analyses were used to examine the relationship between debt and retirement planning and to identify the mediating effect of having a retirement account on the relationship between unsecured and secured debt and retirement planning. Our results indicated that mortgage debt and credit card debt were negatively associated with retirement planning. Having a retirement account is positively associated with retirement planning and it also mediates the relationship between credit card debt, specifically, and retirement planning. In conclusion, we urge individuals and financial planning executives to take time during the pre-retirement years to assess various forms of debt and determine how it is affecting their retirement planning objectives. And policy-makers should address the challenges faced by indebted pre-retirees.

Abstract The effects of gender and marital status on accrued debt in retirement planning becomes an urgent concern because unmarried women face greater financial challenges in retirement than their counterparts. This study used data from the National Financial Capability Study (NFCS), designed by FINRA. We identified debt that influences retirement planning among a sample of pre-retirees, aged 51 to 61 years, and consider the associations of gender, marital status, debt, and retirement planning. Our results indicated that mortgage debt and credit card debt were negatively associated with retirement planning for women. Having a retirement account is positively associated with retirement planning and it also mediates the relationship between credit card debt and retirement planning. We urge women and financial planning executives to take time during the pre-retirement years to assess their various forms of debt and determine how it affects retirement planning objectives given current marital status.

This study was conducted to evaluate the competency to consent to the treatment of psychiatric outpatients and to confirm the role of empowerment and emotional variables in the relationship between competency to consent to treatment and psychological well-being. The study participants consisted of 191 psychiatric outpatients who voluntarily consented to the study among psychiatric outpatients. As a result of competency to consent to treatment evaluation, the score of the psychiatric outpatient’s consent to treatment was higher than the cut-off point for both the overall and sub-factors, confirming that they were overall good. In addition, the effect of the ability of application on psychological well-being among competency to consent to treatment was verified using PROCESS Macro, and the double mediation effect using empowerment and emotional variables was verified to provide an expanded understanding of this. As a result of the analysis, empowerment completely mediated the relation between the ability of application and psychological well-being, and the relation between the ability of application and psychological well-being was sequentially mediated by empowerment and emotion-related variables. Based on these findings, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

An employee’s off-work activities are known to contribute positively to recovering their energy levels depleted by daily work. Despite this view and understanding, the effect of employees’ weekend activities on their psychological well-being has not attracted sufficient research interest. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between employees’ weekend activities and their psychological well-being, and the mediating role of job stress in the above relationship. We also investigated the moderating role of the recovery experiences in the relationship between employees’ weekend activities and job stress. Furthermore, we examined the moderated mediating effect of recovery experiences on the relationship among employees’ weekend activity, job stress, and psychological well-being. The survey data was obtained from 294 employees working in 15 manufacturing companies in South Korea. The participants were 71.1% men and 28.9% women, 49.7% were university graduates, followed by 26.2% college graduates, 12.6% high school graduates, 10.2% post-graduates, and 1.4% Ph.D. holders. In terms of age composition, 50% participants were in their thirties, followed by 19.7% in their forties. The empirical analysis revealed that weekend activities are positively associated with employees’ psychological well-being. Moreover, job stress was found to mediate the relationship between weekend activities and psychological well-being. We also found that the recovery experiences positively moderated the relationship between weekend activities and job stress. Further, the study revealed that the higher the level of recovery experience, the greater the effect of weekend activities on psychological well-being affected by job stress. The paper also discusses the theoretical and practical implications of the study.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social connectedness outside of work and job satisfaction in Mexican teleworkers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research method was correlational, non-experimental, and cross-sectional. Employing an online, self-administered survey, the data were collected in a non-probabilistic sample of 214 individuals. The results suggest that the relationship between social connectedness outside of work and job satisfaction is positive and mediated by positive affective well-being. The mediating effect of positive affective well-being is not moderated by optimistic attributional style. Social connectedness outside of work is important to keep job satisfaction high. Therefore, organizations should facilitate a frequent interaction of their teleworkers with others outside the work domain.

Engaging employees and being supportive in enhancing their well-being in an organization is very paramount. Past studies show that these practices and policies are beneficial to the commitment level of the employer and the employee in the attainment of employee performance. This study was then conceptualized to examine the moderating effect of perceived organizational support on the relationships between organizational climate and organizational commitment and organizational commitment and employee performance. Also, the mediating effect of organizational commitment in the relationship between organizational climate and employee performance. Drawing on employees from the power generation companies in Ghana, a systematic sampling method was employed in choosing 371 respondents for the study. Hierarchical regression in SPSS software (version 23) was employed to analyze the hypotheses. It was observed that organizational commitment partially mediated the relationship between organizational climate and employee performance. However, perceived organizational support had no moderation effect on the relationship between organizational climate and organizational commitment. Furthermore, perceived organizational support had no moderation effect on the relationship between organizational commitment and employee performance. These results suggest that with an effective organizational climate, organizational support does little to strengthen or weaken employee performance. The practical implication is also discussed.

Credit card use has gained popularity throughout the world.  Banks introduce the credit card service as a way of improving their revenue streams. However, in Kenya, the rate of growth in usage has rather been slow. This research surveyed credit card holders in Nairobi, Kenya with a view to investigate the effect of marketing practices on credit usage and whether consumer attitudes had a mediating effect between the two factors.   A cross-sectional survey was conducted by administering a structured questionnaire to 380 respondents. The study established that marketing practices affect credit card usage and that consumer attitudes did not significantly mediate the relationship between marketing practices and credit card usage. This paper makes a valuable contribution to managerial practice by showing how the elements of the extended marketing mix affect credit card usage. Thus it serves to inform the implementation of marketing strategy in banks by guiding on which aspects of marketing should be emphasised so as to increase credit card usage.

Psychological capital (PsyCap) is a state-like concept with roots in positive psychology. This study investigated the potential role of PsyCap, as a personal resource, in increasing the level of employees’ health (mental and physical) and performance. Based on the Job Demand-Resources theory, the mediating effect of burnout was examined using self-report data. The models were tested on 304 Romanian employees (51% women) from Information Technology & Communications (IT&C) companies, using structural equation modeling. The analysis found that burnout partially mediates the relationship between PsyCap and health (mental and physical) as well as the relationship between PsyCap and performance (task and contextual). The results highlight the role of PsyCap, as a personal resource, in health, and performance. These results are useful for implementing an evidence-based intervention to improve the level of PsyCap in IT&C employees. An improvement in PsyCap would reduce burnout and enhance well-being and performance. This study highlights the mediating role of burnout in the relationship between psychological capital and two distinct outcomes: health and performance. Thus, this research helps identify further mediators of the relation between PsyCap and health and performance.

This study aimed to determine the mediating effect of self-awareness on the relationship between burnout and psychological well-being of private school teachers. A descriptive-correlational study was employed to tertiary private school teachers in Region XI, Philippines. The researcher employed purposive sampling using the Slovin’s formula. Adapted survey questionnaires were used in this study. The questionnaires were divided into 3 sets burnout, psychological well-being and self-awareness. Results revealed that there is a significant relationship between burnout, self-awareness and psychological well-being of private school teachers. Self-awareness fully mediate the relationship between burnout and psychological well-being of teachers. Based on the findings and conclusion, since the teachers experience moderate personal burnout, it is recommended that the school official may provide health and wellness programs to reduce the degree of psychological exhaustion of teachers. The moderate self-awareness of teachers shows that the teachers are not yet in full control in the aspect of rumination and reflection. With this, it is recommended that seminars that will improve self-awareness will be conducted in the schools.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mediating effect of organizational trust on the relationship between perceived corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices and firm performance. Design/methodology/approach – A total of 674 questionnaires were sent randomly to Chinese firms to obtain a total of 168 reliable responses. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted for a validity test, and structural equation modeling was employed to test the mediating effect of organizational trust. Findings – The empirical results show that perceived CSR practices of firms had significant direct effects on employee well-being and organizational performance and that organizational trust partially mediated the relationships of CSR practices to employee well-being as well as to organizational performance. Research limitations/implications – The data may not fully represent a generalized survey of all industries with CSR management. In this regard, future research should focus on a specific Chinese industry. The results suggest that firms should more actively promote the role of employees in CSR strategies to better build organizational trust. Originality/value – Previous CSR studies have generally focused on customers’ perceptions, paying little attention to employees’ viewpoints. This study provides the first empirical analysis of the relationship between CSR and firm performance from the perspective of employees in Chinese firms. In addition, the study examines the mediating role of trust in CSR, which has been rarely considered in the context of Chinese firms.

The aim of the present study was to examine the mediating effect of self-concordance on the relationship between internet altruistic behaviour (IAB) and subjective wellbeing (SWB). A total of 356 Chinese university students (159 males and 197 females) participated, using the questionnaires in the Internet Altruistic Behavior Scale (IABS), the Self-Concordance Scale (SCS) and the General Well-Being Schedule (GWBS). Correlation results indicated that IAB was positively correlated with self-concordance and SWB. The hierarchical regression analyses indicated that both IAB and self-concordance positively affect SWB. Moreover, IAB affected SWB indirectly via self-concordance, which confirmed self-concordance partially mediated the relationship between IAB and SWB. These findings extend the previous research on the association between altruism and SWB.
