A Topography of Data Commons: From Regulation to Private Dynamism

Abstract Knowledge is subject to enclosure through digital technology and legal rules. Data collected, stored and pooled by the Internet of Things (IoT) or Artificial Intelligence (AI) are no exception to this. Operators acting in the markets related to the algorithmic society may have a quite diversified range of intellectual property rights (IPRs) to protect the information they produce and manage. This is exploited through algorithmic processing techniques, aggregating collected data for the generation of new ones, thus creating additional information and knowledge. This paper studies whether and when data, information and knowledge, presented within the Big Data, IoT and AI structures, may be considered and exploited as commons. The analysis is not aimed at stating that commons should be the general solution for the algorithmic society. Nor does it endorse legal interpretations unilaterally favoring openness and limiting IPR protection and privacy rules (though this could be the case under certain circumstances). The question is to establish whether a certain level of commons should be provided by regulation or left to spontaneous private initiatives. In this regard, two different meanings of data commons are used in this work. The first one refers to the open access systems provided by regulation, equivalent to a public domain protection, and opposed to exclusivity mechanisms. The second refers to data commons which are privately ‘constructed’ on top of background regulation and manage resources for a limited set of claimants.

New technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, machine intelligence, and the Internet of Things are seeing repetitive tasks move away from humans to machines. Humans cannot become machines, but machines can become more human-like. The traditional model of educating workers for the workforce is fast becoming irrelevant. There is a massive need for the retooling of human workers. Humans need to be trained to remain focused in a society which is constantly getting bombarded with information. The two basic elements of physical and mental capacity are slowly being taken over by machines and artificial intelligence. This changes the fundamental role of the global workforce.

This article provides an overview of the decision to improve the field storage of sugar beet. The purpose of development is to preserve the crop. Methods of monitoring volumes of piles and microclimate inside them are considered. The method for obtaining data on volumes of piles and the further use thereof for optimizing the storage process is described.

Edge data processing represents the new evolution of the Internet and Cloud computing. Its application to the Internet of Things (IoT) is a step towards faster processing of information from sensors for better performance. In automated systems, we have a large number of sensors, whose information needs to be processed in the shortest possible time and acted upon. The paper describes the possibility of applying Artificial Intelligence on Edge devices using the example of finding a parking space for a vehicle, and directing it based on the segment the vehicle belongs to. Algorithm of Machine Learning is used for vehicle classification, which is based on vehicle dimensions.

There is a paradigm shift in the financial services industry. Combined with ever-changing customer expectations and preferences, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, the internet of things (IoT), and blockchain are redefining how financial institutions deliver services. It is an enormous task to remain competitive in this ever-changing environment. Financial institutions see FinTech as a major part of the digital future, and as proof of this, since 2015, financial institutions have invested over US$ 27 billion in FinTech and digital innovation. This chapter is an introductory chapter that explores FinTech in the literature. It focuses on how FinTech is reshaping the financial industry by describing FinTech phases and development process. The financial products and services using FinTech are also described with a highlight on Islamic FinTech. The chapter finally concludes by describing the future of FinTech.

The introduction of Industry 4.0 has increased the focus on a number of technologies. These technologies also help realize the vision for intelligent cities. Furthermore, there are already discussions of Industry 5.0. One emerging aspect of Industry 5.0 is human-robot co-working. With the help of artificial intelligence, the internet of things paradigm, Industry 4.0, and Industry 5.0 visions, there will be two predominant types of systems interfacing with people in intelligent cities. These are robotic and ambient intelligence systems. The increasing deployment of these will help make cities even smarter. However, we need to see advancements in a number of relevant key technologies, including power and networking technologies. In this chapter, first, the authors briefly discuss Industry 4.0, Industry 5.0, and intelligent cities paradigm, as well as robotic and ambient intelligence systems. Then, they focus on developing trends in power and networking technologies.
