Increasing enrollment into clinical trials is a top priority across the field of oncology. Because the vast majority of those afflicted with cancer receive their care in the community, creating strong clinical research programs in the community-based setting is important. This article comprehensively outlines the most important elements of creating and sustaining a successful community-based research program. Establishing a clear mission and defining the scope of the research program in collaboration with key physicians and administrative leadership are critical to success. Standard operating procedures should detail operational processes. Ensuring sound financial planning and protected physician time are crucial for a healthy program. Providing mentorship opportunities to investigators and other team members will provide necessary guidance for junior investigators and long-term program stability. Prioritizing provider and patient volunteer engagement through education and awareness will potentially improve enrollment and research ownership. Incorporating administrative and clinical research staff and health care providers, including physicians, advanced practice providers, and pharmacists, will result in a multidisciplinary and unified approach and may also promote research as a routine part of patient care. Regular safety and scientific meetings will reduce regulatory complications and, most importantly, improve patient care. Other keys to a successful program include establishing a diverse trial portfolio, collaboration between different institutions, and ensuring appropriate technological infrastructure. Serial programmatic review provides opportunities to refine suboptimal practices and recognize successful strategies. Community-based research programs are critical to improve access to optimal cancer care. Implementation of successful programs is possible with a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach.

Background. Knowledge translation (KT) models that represent an individual’s perspective are a sign of effective KT. Some common challenges in KT include participant engagement, organization of the team, and time demands of the participants. We implemented a unique tripartite KT program to (1) share current research, (2) inform persons living with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) about the clinical research process, and (3) invite pwMS to immediately participate in clinical research. The primary aim was to determine participants’ perspectives on the value and acceptability of an experiential research program offered at a patient and family educational conference. Methods. A team of researchers identified factors that would impact the logistics of hosting an experiential research program at a conference and designed a unique tripartite KT program. The local multiple sclerosis (MS) society was engaged to select an appropriate location and invite stakeholders to the conference. A survey to determine participants’ perspectives on the value and acceptability of the experiential research program was developed and analyzed. Results. 65 pwMS attended the conference, and 44 (67.7%) participated in the on-site experiential research program. 72.7% of the participants completed the survey, of which 93.8% stated that they strongly agree or agree with the following statements: “Did you feel like participating in research today was a valuable experience to you?” and “Did you feel like you were contributing to MS research?” 100% of the participants agreed or strongly agreed when asked “would you like to see more research activities taking place at these kinds of events?” Conclusions. This paper describes the logistics and challenges of conducting an experiential KT program, which proved to be rewarding for pwMS. The majority of pwMS attending the conference agreed to participate in the on-site experiential research program and an overwhelming majority of participants felt the experience was valuable.

ABSTRACT The role of physicians in the U.S. Armed Forces is diverse, encompassing a wide array of skills and responsibilities to provide superior healthcare to their patients and to advance military medicine. In addition to healthcare delivery and medical education, military physicians are engaged in public health, operational medicine, and cutting-edge medical research. Thus, clinical research is a crucial component of Graduate Medical Education (GME) and supports critical thinking (knowledge, skills, and abilities) and the development of leadership skills among U.S. military physicians. The Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) education mission was established in 2005 with the overall goal of supporting the development and training of the next generation of clinical researchers in infectious diseases and related public health disciplines in the Armed Forces using several strategies, including didactic learning, mentored research, and research engagement. Through involvement in the IDCRP, infectious disease fellows, residents (e.g., surgical, internal medicine, and pediatrics), and Master of Public Health (MPH) students have continued their education and gained valuable skills related to clinical research. Trainees either conduct research with IDCRP mentors or participate in IDCRP-led practicum experiences, with research projects ranging from epidemiologic studies to microbiological assessments. Consistent with the needs of the Military Health System (MHS), and in accordance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education goals, the IDCRP provides opportunities for medical and graduate students, residents, and infectious disease fellows to conduct mentored research within the MHS, as well as gain important leadership skills in the conduct of clinical research. Overall, IDCRP continues to further infectious disease research through the support and education of the next generation of active-duty infectious disease researchers in the MHS.
