Tasks devised to assess theory of mind abilities are considered. The findings from neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies are discussed as evidence for localization of theory of mind processes in frontal subregions. Evidence for the influence of healthy adult aging on theory of mind is also described.

Tests assessing emotional processing are described and evidence for localization of emotional processes within frontal subregions is discussed. The evidence comes from studies of patients with frontal lobe lesions and neuroimaging data. The influence of healthy adult aging on emotional processing is also considered.

Tests to assess social decision-making are discussed in relation to localization of social decision-making processes within frontal subregions. The findings from patient and lesion studies and from neuroimaging studies are considered. In addition, studies examining the effects of healthy adult aging on performance on these social decision-making tests are reviewed.

Frontal tests devised to tap working memory processes are described. Evidence from studies involving patient and neuroimaging data for localization of working memory processes within the various frontal subregions is considered. The effects of healthy adult aging on performance of these tasks tapping working memory is also discussed.

The frontal tests available in the literature for assessment of abstraction abilities are discussed. For each test, the evidence for localization of abstraction processes within the various frontal subregions is considered, including the findings from patient and lesion studies as well as neuroimaging studies. The effects of healthy adult aging on tests tapping abstraction abilities are also discussed.

Abstract The argument against innatism at the heart of Cognitive Gadgets is provocative but premature, and is vitiated by dichotomous thinking, interpretive double standards, and evidence cherry-picking. I illustrate my criticism by addressing the heritability of imitation and mindreading, the relevance of twin studies, and the meaning of cross-cultural differences in theory of mind development. Reaching an integrative understanding of genetic inheritance, plasticity, and learning is a formidable task that demands a more nuanced evolutionary approach.
