Contemporary Monasticism

This chapter surveys the unprecedented change experienced by monks and nuns following the Rule of Benedict from 1960 to the present. It describes the monastic world as it stood in 1960, how it changed as a result of the Second Vatican Council, and how it grapples with declining numbers of members, ageing communities, and new technologies, among other things. It concludes by suggesting areas that will need to be dealt with in the future if the institution of monasticism is to continue: the need for consistent and creative leadership, the strengthening of the mystical dimension of monasticism, the formulation of a new asceticism, and appropriate adaptation.

AbstractThis article examines the origins and development of bilateral theological dialogue between Methodists and Roman Catholics at a world level since it commenced in 1967 as a result of the Second Vatican Council. In taking stock of the dialogue, consideration is given to what has been achieved in successive phases during the past fifty years. A number of theological issues are identified as requiring further dialogue. The article concludes by outlining the present agenda of the international Methodist–Roman Catholic dialogue commission and briefly considering the future prospects for theological dialogue at a world level in the context of contemporary ecumenism.

After noting convergences regarding the Eucharist between the teaching of the Second Vatican Council and the views of the 1963 Faith and Order conference, this chapter surveys a wide range of bilateral and multilateral ecumenical agreed statements on the Eucharist achieved in recent decades. It finds broad progress in them regarding three specific aspects of the Eucharist, namely, the links between the Eucharist and the Church, the Eucharist and the Holy Spirit, and the Eucharist and the future (or eschatology), respectively. It identifies outstanding issues, especially regarding the Eucharist as sacrament and sacrifice, and suggests how the progress provides a new context for tackling those issues. The relationship between baptismal and eucharistic ecclesiologies is then considered, and also ways in which the Eucharist has been recognized in ecumenical dialogue as influencing the structure of the Church. Attention is finally given to ecological implications of the Eucharist.

Jubileu RCC. Vaticano II.Abstract: The hypothesis of this reflection is the Catholic Charismatic Renovation (RCC) as a post-conciliar movement. But is the council which renewed the Church only a remote reference for the Charismatic movement, or is it, in fact, also a compass of orientation for its course? In the light of more than 50 years passed since the closing of the council and of the celebration of the golden jubilee of the movement, the article proposes, in the first place, to recall the three big phases of RCC, principally in Brazil: genesis, evolution and consolidation. In a second part, the article shows the general appreciation of the movement as well by the ecclesiastic hierarchy as by theologians during these 50 years of its existence. In the third place, the author proposes a judgement in the form of a balance, reflecting the contributions of the RCC and the principal questionings of the movement. Lastly, as a conclusion, Pedro Rubens again takes up his hypothesis on the basis of the orientations of the council, and principally remembering the last appeals of Pope Francis to the RCC, thus indicating an appointment book open to the future, which has the Second Vatican Council as reference and compass, as it should be regarded by all Catholics. Keywords: Catholic Charismatic Renovation.
