AbstractWe present a study of HST/STIS optical spectra of a sample of ten Seyfert galaxies aimed at analyzing the structure and physical properties of the coronal line region. The high spatial resolution provided by STIS (about 7 pc for the closest objects) allowed us to resolve the coronal line region and obtain key information about the kinematics of the coronal-line gas, measure directly its spatial scale, and study the mechanisms that drive the high-ionization lines.

AbstractWe used the integral field TIGER to map the intensity ratios of emission lines and the velocity field over the narrow emission line of a few nearby Seyfert galaxies. Our aim is to study the impact of nuclear activity on galaxies, which will hopefully help us to probe the central engine. We present here some results for two objects: M 51 and NGC 5929.

The preliminary results of a high-resolution study of narrow emission-line profiles in bright Seyfert galaxies are reported. Profile substructures such as secondary peaks and shoulders are observed in nearly all the objects. The results of profile comparisons in Mrk 359, Mrk 533, and Mrk 1066 are briefly discussed.

A prediction of the current paradigm of the hierarchical assembly of galaxies is the presence of supermassive dual black holes at separations of a few kpc or less. In this context, we report the detection of a narrow-line emitter within the extended Lyα nebula (~120 kpc diameter) of the luminous radio-quiet quasi-stellar object (QSO) LBQS 0302–0019 at z = 3.286. We identify several high-ionization narrow emission lines (He II, C IV, C III) associated with this point-like source, which we have named “Jil”, which is only ~20 kpc (2.̋9) away from the QSO in projection. Emission-line diagnostics confirm that the source is likely powered by photoionization of an obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) three orders of magnitude fainter than the QSO. The system represents the tightest unobscured/obscured dual AGN currently known at z > 3, highlighting the power of MUSE to detect these elusive systems.

ABSTRACT Using a sample of ≃144 000 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14, we investigate the outflow properties, evident in both absorption and emission, of high-ionization broad absorption line (BAL) and non-BAL quasars with redshifts 1.6 ≲ $z$ ≤ 3.5 and luminosities 45.3 erg s−1 < log10(Lbol) < 48.2 erg s−1. Key to the investigation is a continuum and emission-line reconstruction scheme, based on mean-field independent component analysis, that allows the kinematic properties of the C iv λ1550 emission line to be compared directly for both non-BAL and BAL quasars. C iv emission blueshift and equivalent width (EW) measurements are thus available for both populations. Comparisons of the emission-line and BAL trough properties reveal strong systematic correlations between the emission and absorption properties. The dependence of quantitative outflow indicators on physical properties such as quasar luminosity and luminosity relative to Eddington luminosity is also shown to be essentially identical for the BAL and non-BAL populations. There is an absence of BALs in quasars with the hardest spectral energy distributions (SEDs), revealed by the presence of strong He ii λ1640 emission, large C iv λ1550 emission EW, and no measurable blueshift. In the remainder of the C iv emission blueshift versus EW space, BAL and non-BAL quasars are present at all locations; for every BAL quasar, it is possible to identify non-BAL quasars with the same emission-line outflow properties and SED hardness. The co-location of BAL and non-BAL quasars as a function of emission-line outflow and physical properties is the key result of our investigation, demonstrating that (high-ionization) BALs and non-BALs represent different views of the same underlying quasar population.

New observations of the radio nucleus of the nearby bright spiral galaxy M81 (NGC 3031) show that the structure of the nucleus is considerably more complex than previously thought. The radio nucleus has a slightly inverted, variable spectrum (de Bruyn et al. 1976; Crane, Guffrida, and Carlson 1976). The variability and VLBI observations (Kellermann et al. 1976; Jones, Sramek, and Terzian 1981) both indicate a linear dimension of ~1500 AU. The recent VLBI observations of Bartel et al. (1982) determined that nearly 100% of the emission originates in an elongated region with linear dimensions of 1000–4000 AU. Peimbert and Torres-Peimbert (1981) have classified the optical nucleus of M81 as Seyfert type 1.5 (the weakest known) with the narrow-emission-line region extending over ~5″ (Münch 1959).
