Introduction: The average incidence of perioperative stroke during major non-cardiac surgery is less than 1%, suggesting that it is rarely a major problem for the vast majority of patients. Methods: In our paper we present a 46-year-old patient undergoing acute right hemicolectomy who developed right-sided hemiparesis in the perioperative setting. Immediate CTAg examination showed an ischemic stroke in the left hemisphere as a result of left internal carotid thrombosis. A surgical procedure to recanalize the left carotid artery was performed 14 hours from the onset of neurological symptomatology and the neurological deficit gradually recovered fully. Conclusion: Our case report supports studies showing that a thorough diagnostic assessment allows the selection of patients who may benefit from urgent revascularization of acute internal carotid occlusion during the phase of acute brain ischemia.

The article analyzes the use of polymer materials for solving problems of theoretical and practical medicine. The effectiveness of the use of polymers in reconstructive cardiac surgery, radiation therapy, etc. has been shown. The basic requirements set for polymers and composites for medical devices have been identified. The most important criterion for the selection of polymers is the safety of their use in clinical practice and their ability to biodegrade when they enter a living organism along the usual metabolic pathways in the absence of inflammatory and allergic reactions of surrounding tissues during longterm followup care.

This chapter summarizes the pharmacological interventions that can be used in the prevention of acute kidney injury (AKI). These following interventions are discussed: the use and selection of vasopressors; the administration of loop diuretics and mannitol; vasodilating drugs including dopamine, atrial natriuretic peptide, nesiritide, fenoldopam, and adenosine antagonists. The role of N-acetylcysteine in the prevention of contrast-induced AKI and cardiac surgery is discussed. The chapter concludes with a summary of the potential role of insulin-like growth factor and erythropoietin in the prevention of AKI.

Patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery, especially open cardiac procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass, are exposed to several alterations in primary and secondary hemostasis. These derangements are associated with increased microvascular bleeding that is refractory to conventional surgical maneuvers aimed at achieving hemostasis. This poses a technical problem for the surgeon and exposes the patient to increased morbidity from uncontrolled bleeding and any associated transfusion of blood products. Use of biosurgical hemostatic agents, specifically in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, have been shown to be safe and effective in reducing time to hemostasis, decreasing transfusion of blood products, and improving patient outcomes. Despite their merits, selection of a topical hemostat is frequently based on anecdotal experience and limited knowledge of the available agents. The prepared surgeon is familiar with these agents and can anticipate opportunities for their deployment in the setting of coagulopathy.

Technical University of Lodz in cooperation with the Foundation for Cardiac Surgery Development conducts research on the design and control method of Polish Robin Heart cardiosurgical robots family. One of the major problems in telemanipulation is intuitiveness of control. One of the methods to ensure it is using systems that duplicate master displacement to manipulator displacement. The selection of the proper method when it is not possible to predict what will be the position of the camera observing the work area in relation to the position of the manipulator arm is especially important. Transformations between different coordinate systems must be taken into consideration. Four methods of position copying system implementation tested on RobIn Heart cardiosurgical telemanipulator will be presented in this article. Detailed algorithms will be described and the results of tests determining the duration of certain tasks will be presented.
