Approximately 7 million people in the United States are in jail, in prison, or on probation or parole, many as a result of drug-related offenses. Individuals who use opiates account for a significant minority of this population. Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) of opiate addiction is highly effective in reducing drug use, drugrelated criminal activity, and risk of human immunodeficiency virus transmission. Recently released inmates are at particularly high risk for overdose and disease transmission. Project MOD (Managing Opioid Dependency) provides services to eliminate logistical and financial barriers to MMT entry immediately on release from incarceration. Such programs provide a promising opportunity to facilitate reentry into the community, combat disease transmission, and reduce recidivism.

Abstract Background Anxiety, an important factor that affects the therapeutic effect and preservation rate of methadone maintenance treatment, has a high prevalence among MMT patients. This study aims to investigate the effects of treatment status and life quality on anxiety in MMT patients. Methods One hundred and Seventy-seven methadone maintenance treatment users in Guangzhou, China were evaluated. The socio-demographic, duration and MMT-related characteristics were documented. Anxiety level and quality of life were evaluated by Beck Anxiety inventory (BAI) and the Quality of Life-Drug Addiction (QOL-DA) respectively. The correlation between different factors and BAI score was also analyzed. Results The BAI total score and the QOL-DA score were 7.1±8.2, 163.5±21.4 respectively. 30.5% of the subjects showed mild to severe anxiety. Treatment interruption and QOL-DA score had strong correlations with the score of BAI, with correlation coefficients of 0.17 and − 0.08 respectively. Conclusions Anxiety symptoms were commonly presented in MMT patients. Treatment interruption and quality of life are two major factors affecting anxiety of MMT patients.

Online training needs of Methadone Maintenance Treatment clinics in southern Vietnam

Introduction: Continuing Medical Education (CME) significantly improves the competency of healthcare workers in Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) clinics. However, CME courses are very costly, and a few participants fully attended a course. Online training is an alternative approach to efficiently improve training outcomes. The study assessed needs and possibility of online training courses of MMT clinics in southern Vietnam. Methods: A google form was designed to collect characteristics, man-powers, facilities, online activities and training needs of MMT clinics. E-mails were sent to all MMT clinics in southern Vietnam to ask for their participants. A representative of MMT clinics who satisfied the inclusion invited to complete the form. Result: 93 MMT clinics completed the survey. The response rate was 62% (93/150). One MMT clinic had 3 doctors/assistant doctors, 3 pharmacists/drug dispensers, 2 consultants and 3 other professionals on average. The number of clients visiting the clinic in the last month was 150. About 94% (93/95) of MMT clinics provide other additional services. On average, 385 clients came to MMT for other services. All clinics had adequate devices for online and blended training. Conclusion: MMT clinics had high training needs and were willing to attend online and blended training courses. Online and blended training were possible in MMT clinics.
