Background. Solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas is a rare neoplasm, accounting for only 1–2 % of all pancreatic neoplasms and having a tendency to affect mainly young women.Material and methods. We report a case of a solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas in a 28-year-old man treated with laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy in Moscow Botkin Hospital.Results. The tumor was discovered incidentally by routine survey ultrasound or computed tomography of the abdomen. The patient underwent distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy. The immunohistochemical study showed a pronounced positive nuclear staining for β-catenin and progesterone and a negative staining for chromogranin A and synaptophysin, thus confirming the presence of solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas.Conclusion. In case of pancreatic tumor, even in male patients, a solid pseudopapillary tumor must be considered in the differential diagnosis. Surgical strategies should be based on the location, size of the tumor and the involvement of adjacent organs, because R0-resection with a solid pseudopapillary tumor leads to a good 5-year survival.

A solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas is a very rare tumor of unclear histogenesis. Its frequency is 1–2% of the total number of exocrine tumors and about 5% of cystic tumors of the pancreas. Only 130 mainly publications related to separate clinical observations of this pathology are available in medical literature. We found no works describing the complicated course of a solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas in children. The article describes a clinical case with a probable complicated, life threatening course of a solid pseudopapillary pancreatic tumor in children due to peptic erosion of tissues and vessels with capsular rapture.

Solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas (SPTP) is a rare disease of young females that does not usually recur after resection. Here we report a case of an elderly female with history of SPTP ten years ago who presented with anorexia and a palpable left lower quadrant abdominal mass. Imaging revealed metastatic disease and US-guided biopsy of the liver confirmed the diagnosis of SPTP. Due to her advanced age and comorbidities, she elected to undergo hospice care. The objective of this case report is to increase awareness of this tumor and its possibility of recurrence, necessitating further guidelines for follow-up.

The clinical case of a rare pancreatic tumor in a 8-year-old child with hypoglycemia (decrease in blood sugar to 1,5 mmol/l) is presented. A sonographic picture of the solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas is shown. The capability of ultrasound investigation in differential diagnostics of small-size neoplasms at early stages is pointed out. The role of the Doppler’s effect with color mapping in visualization of the pancreatic vascular pattern normality and at the verification of pancreatic pathological mass is described. Histological examination which identifies the cellular structure forms solid and pseudopapillary images.
