Important keys to effective communication are language competences, which can be supported by using digital language resources. These usually assist the acquisition of a second language, despite their potential for improving one’s native language. Our study was, thus, aimed at raising awareness about the possibilities of improving the native language of an adult population by using digital language resources for the Slovenian language. We conducted workshops, a survey and, partly, semi-structured interviews with 124 participants. We examined whether the perceived usefulness and ease of using digital language resources depends on age, education, self-assessed language proficiency, and experience with language training. The analysis revealed that self-initiative use of analogue language resources is related positively to using digital ones for seeking information, improving language use, as well as for study or work. Moreover, self-assessed proficiency in language was found to affect the perceived ease of using digital language resources. These findings may help language professionals support developing language skills by using digital language resources and preserving language in an adult population.

Phishing is a form of social engineering attack that can be used to steal sensitive and vital information and details from unsuspecting entities which could either be organizations or individuals. This paper gives a review on how phishing attacks are carried out and the protection techniques involved in defending against such attacks and how to raise awareness about such attacks in Bournemouth University using the MINDSPACE framework. The protection techniques would be classified into three layers namely; automated tools, training and knowledge, and multifactor authentication. The awareness would be raised using the MINDSPACE framework and it revealed that about 50% of the students approached were ignorant of the phishing attack and the tactics used to carry the attack out.

Melioidosis is a tropical infectious disease caused by the soil-dwelling bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei with a mortality of up to 50% in low resource settings. Only a few cases have been reported from African countries. However, studies on the global burden of melioidosis showed that Africa holds a significant unrecognized disease burden, with Nigeria being at the top of the list. The first World Health Organization African Melioidosis Workshop was organized in Lagos, Nigeria, with representatives of health authorities, microbiology laboratories, and clinical centers from across the continent. Dedicated hands-on training was given on laboratory diagnostics of B. pseudomallei. This meeting report summarizes the objectives discussed, such as raising awareness on melioidosis and building capacity for the detection, diagnosis, biosafety, treatment, and prevention of this dreadful neglected disease across Africa by bringing together regional and international experts to share best practices. It is important to join forces with the African Centers for Disease Control, WHO, African Sepsis Alliance, and Antimicrobial Resistance action plans.

Beirut, Lebanon, has been a nexus for the east and west, has undergone episodes of conflict including the civil war between 1975 and 1989, and still witnesses instability to the present. This status has affected its everyday life practices, particularly as manifested in its public spaces. Over time, Beirut’s population has reflected the ability to adapt to living with different states of public spaces; these include embracing new public space models, adjusting to living in the war-time period with annihilated public spaces, and establishing a reconnaissance with post-war reintroduced, securitized, or temporary public spaces. Lefebvre’s space production triad serves to distinguish among spaces introduced through planning tools, from spaces appropriated through immaterial space-markers, or spaces established through social practices. This article provides an overview of the evolution of Beirut’s public spaces, starting with the medieval city and through into the 19th century, before examining the impact of instability and the conditions leading to the emergence of social spaces in the post-war period. It particularly highlights public spaces after 2005—when civic activism played an important role in raising awareness on the right to inclusive public space—by referring to literature, conducting interviews with public space protagonists, and addressing a questionnaire survey to inhabitants. The cases of Martyrs Square, Damascus Road, and the Pine Forest are presented, among other spaces in and around Beirut. The article reflects on the ability of some public spaces to serve as tools for social integration in a society that was segregated in the bouts of Beirut’s instability.

AbstractIn recent years, risk assessments for violent extremism have attracted great interest from both scholars and practitioners, and many assessment tools have been developed. After a critical review of this development, the paper examines differences and similarities between the indicators of various violent extremist risk assessment tools and checklists. Based on an interview study with 34 experts in the field of Counter Violent Extremism and 24 (formerly) radicalized persons from the right-wing radical and Salafi-Jihadist spectrum, risk factors were identified and the findings merged and compared with already existing risk assessment tools. The paper will present results especially regarding the risk signals’ occurrence and applicability in the German context. One key finding is that existing assessment tools insufficiently take into account personal contacts in the radicalization process. Thus, the paper—based on the results of a social network analysis—draws attention to the potential and importance of networks. The paper concludes by outlining the potential of risk assessment, suggesting improvements, and raising awareness of the limits and deficits of these tools. The paper thus scientifically addresses the challenge of more security through efficient risk assessment and management. It offers a list of radicalization process characteristics (ARISNA: Assessment of Radicalized Individuals including Social Network Analysis), which is designed to help users analyze the risk of radicalization based on concrete traits of a person and their environment.

Promoting health and preventing ill health are key standards of proficiency for pre-registration nursing education in the UK. The knowledge and skills required to fulfil this role is dependent on students developing a clear understanding of population health during their educational experience. The websites of the 60 undergraduate adult nursing programmes in England that lead to registration were explored, to see how the population health agenda is presented in the information for future candidates. It was found that only 26% of universities promote a population health agenda in the general description of the adult nursing programme, emphasising clinical skills teaching and partnerships with hospital trusts for placement provision. To embrace the breadth of 21st century nursing practice, universities should be marketing nursing proficiencies and raising awareness of the wider context in which care is delivered during recruitment. This approach to branding has the potential to challenge stereotypes and widen participation.

Every year, the Federation of Islamic Medical Association (FIMA) conducts a basic life support (BLS) course for the public, not just in one, but in several countries. It is held in mosques as a method of raising awareness on the importance of BLS among the public, apart from highlighting the function of a mosque as a place of obtaining knowledge. Traditionally, it was conducted as face-to-face training. However, with the 2019 novel coronavirus pandemic, the training was changed to a hybrid method to balance between the needs to teach BLS skills to the public and the necessity of avoiding the spread of infection. This article discussed the Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (IMAM)’s experience in organizing a mass BLS course for public in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic while utilising a small mosque as a hub of learning.International Journal of Human and Health Sciences Vol. 06 No. 01 January’22 Page: 6-10

Sustainable consumption practices help to reduce environmental impacts and fosters responsible consumers. Researchers have explored the positive drivers and negative barriers of fashion-conscious consumer (FCC) purchasing intention on fashion clothing. The study also examined the motives and outcomes of the phenomenon, such as rental landscape and frugality. Using the qualitative phenomenological method, researchers conducted 21 in-depth semi-structured interviews in India to tap into FCC's buying intention and experience. From the results of qualitative analysis, researchers identified “emotion” as a new parameter reflecting consumer passion and interpersonal relationships. Different themes emerged, such as selection of the style, attention-seeking, status value, cost factor (uncontrollable), and psychological value, which are the commonly identified motivators. Conceptual framework is developed to understand the perception towards green environment and sustainability. The implications are to improve the sustainable practices in the fashion sector through rental options and frugality.
