A significant opportunity for reducing the weight of composite aircraft is through the development of an economically efficient method to detect barely visible or invisible impact damage sustained in service. In this paper, a structurally integrated, inert, wireless system for rapid, large-area impact damage detection in composite is demonstrated. Large-area inspection from single sensors using ultrasonic-guided waves is achieved with a baseline-subtraction technique. The wireless interface uses electromagnetic coupling between coils in the embedded sensor and inspection wand. Compact encapsulated sensor units are built and successfully embedded into composite panels at manufacture. Chirp-based excitation is used to enable single-shot measurements with high signal-to-random-noise ratio to be obtained. Signal processing to compensate for variability in inspection wand alignment is developed and shown to be necessary to obtain adequate baseline subtraction performance for damage detection. Results from sensors embedded in both glass fibre and carbon fibre-reinforced composite panels are presented. Successful detection of a 10 J impact damage in the former is demonstrated at a range of 125 mm. Quantitative extrapolation of this result suggests that the same level of impact damage would be detectable at a range of up to 1000 mm with an inspection wand alignment tolerance of 4 mm.

The sensitivity of the electromechanical impedance to structural damage under varying temperature is investigated in this paper. An approach based on maximizing cross-correlation coefficients is used to compensate temperature effects. The experiments are carried out on an air plane conform carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) panel (500mm x 500mm x 5mm) instrumented with 26 piezoelectric transducers of two different sizes. In a first step, the panel is stepwise subjected to temperatures between-50 °C and 100 °C. The influence of varying temperatures on the measured impedances and the capability of the temperature compensation approach are analyzed. Next, the sensitivity to a 200 J impact damage is analyzed and it is set in relation to the influence of a temperature change. It becomes apparent the impact of the transducer size and location on the quality of the damage detection. The results further indicate a significant influence of temperature on the measured spectra. However, applying the temperature compensation algorithm can reduce the temperature effect at the same time increasing the transducer sensitivity within its measuring area. The paper concludes with a discussion about the trade-off between the sensing area, where damage should be detected, and the temperature range, in which damage within this area can reliably be detected.

A novel high-voltage powerline inspection system is investigated, which consists of the cooperated ground vehicle and drone. The ground vehicle acts as a mobile platform that can launch and recycle the drone, while the drone can fly over the powerline for inspection within limited endurance. This inspection system enables the drone to inspect powerline networks in a very large area. Both vehicle’ route in the road network and drone’s routes along the powerline network have to be optimized for improving the inspection efficiency, which generates a new two-layer point-arc routing problem. Two constructive heuristics are designed based on “Cluster First, Rank Second” and “Rank First, Split Second”. Then local search strategies are developed to further improve the quality of the solution. To test the performance of the proposed algorithms, practical cases with different-scale are designed based on the road network and powerline network of Ji’an, China. Sensitivity analysis on the parameters related with the drone’s inspection speed and battery capacity is conducted. Computational results indicate that technical improvement on the inspection sensor is more important for the cooperated ground vehicle and drone system.
