Three Gram-staining-negative, strictly aerobic, non-pigmented, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strains, SP32T ( = SLM-1T), SR68 ( = SLM-3) and SP95 ( = SLM-2), were isolated from two water samples of a cold-water lake in Xinjiang province, China. Growth was observed at 4–25 °C and pH 6.0–9.0, and optimum growth occurred at 18–20 °C and at pH 7.0–7.5. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that these isolates belonged to the family Rhodobacteraceae , but formed an evolutionary lineage distinct from other species of this family with validly published names. Strain SP32T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (96.7 %) to Rhodobacter veldkampii ATCC 35703T, and the similarity to members of the genera Defluviimonas , Haematobacter and Pseudorhodobacter was respectively 95.8–96.4, 96.0–96.1 and 95.3–96.1 %. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain SP32T was 67.6 mol%. The major fatty acids (>5 %) were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c) and11-methyl C18 : 1ω7c. Phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, one unidentified glycolipid and one unidentified polar lipid were the main polar lipids. Ubiquinone 10 (Q-10) was the sole respiratory quinone. Strain SP32T did not produce photosynthetic pigments and did not contain the gene pufM, by which it differed from the phototrophic species of the family Rhodobacteraceae . Based on its distinct phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic properties, strain SP32T represents a novel species in a novel genus within the family Rhodobacteraceae , for which we propose the name Frigidibacter albus gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Frigidibacter albus is strain SP32T ( = SLM-1T = CGMCC 1.13995T = NBRC 109671T).

A novel bacterium, designated strain F051-1T, isolated from a seawater sample collected from the coast at Damupo beach in Pohang, Korea, was investigated in a polyphasic taxonomic study. Cells were yellow-pigmented, strictly aerobic, Gram-staining-negative and rod-shaped. The temperature, pH and NaCl ranges for growth were 4–30 °C, pH 6.0–9.0 and 1.0–6.0 % (w/v), respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain F051-1T belongs to the genus Psychroserpens in the family Flavobacteriaceae . Its closest relatives were Psychroserpens burtonensis ACAM 188T (96.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Psychroserpens mesophilus KOPRI 13649T (95.7 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and anteiso-C15 : 0. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, one unidentified phospholipid and eight unidentified lipids. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 and the genomic DNA G+C content of the strain was 33.5 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic data, strain F051-1T represents a novel species within the genus Psychroserpens , for which the name Psychroserpens damuponensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is F051-1T ( = KCTC 23539T  = JCM 17632T).

A marine bacterium, designated SCSIO 03483T, was isolated from a marine sediment sample collected from the Nansha Islands in the South China Sea. The strain produced roundish colonies with diffusible yellow-coloured pigment on nutrient agar medium or marine agar 2216. Optimal growth occurred in the presence of 0–4 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH 7.0 and a temperature range of 28–37 °C. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the isolate belonged to the family Flavobacteriaceae and showed relatively high sequence similarity with Imtechella halotolerans K1T (92.7 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate shared a lineage with members of the genera Imtechella , Joostella and Zhouia . Phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and three unknown polar lipids. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6 and the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c/C16 : 1ω7c). The DNA G+C content of strain SCSIO 03483T was 38.4 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular data, strain SCSIO 03483T represents a novel species in a new genus in the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Sinomicrobium oceani gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Sinobacterium oceani is SCSIO 03483T ( = KCTC 23994T = CGMCC 1.12145T).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped motile bacterium with peritrichous flagella, designated strain LZB041T, was isolated from offshore surface seawater of the East China Sea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain LZB041T formed a lineage within the family ‘ Aurantimonadaceae ’ that was distinct from the most closely related genera Aurantimonas (96.0–96.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Aureimonas (94.5–96.0 %). Optimal growth occurred in the presence of 1–7 % (w/v) NaCl, at pH 7.0–8.0 and at 28–37 °C. Ubiquinone-10 was the predominant respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids (>10 % of total fatty acids) were C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c (summed feature 8) and cyclo-C19 : 0ω8c. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, one unknown aminolipid, one unknown phospholipid and one unknown polar lipid. The DNA G+C content of strain LZB041T was 71.3 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic analysis, strain LZB041T is considered to represent a novel species of a new genus in the class Alphaproteobacteria , for which the name Jiella aquimaris gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is LZB041T ( = JCM 30119T = MCCC 1K00255T).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, orange-pigmented, slightly halophilic, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain JAMH 0132T, was isolated from the trophosome of a tubeworm in Kagoshima Bay, Japan, and its taxonomic position was investigated using a polyphasic approach. The novel strain grew optimally at 28–30 °C and with about 2.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Chemotaxonomic analysis showed that Q-10 was the predominant respiratory quinone and that C18 : 1ω7c, C16 : 0 2-OH and C16 : 0 were the major fatty acids. Sphingoglycolipid, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylcholine were the major polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 60.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain JAMH 0132T belonged to the family Sphingomonadaceae , within the class Alphaproteobacteria . The novel strain appeared most closely related to Sphingopyxis baekryungensis SW-150T (95.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and showed less sequence similarity with representatives of the genera Blastomonas , Sphingomonas , Sphingosinicella and Novosphingobium (<94.8 %). In having no detectable polyamine, strain JAMH 0132T differed from members of all genera currently in the family Sphingomonadaceae . On the basis of its phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain JAMH 0132T represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Sphingomonadaceae for which the name Parasphingopyxis lamellibrachiae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Parasphingopyxis lamellibrachiae gen. nov., sp. nov. is JAMH 0132T ( = JCM 15549T  = NCIMB 14486T).

A novel Gram-negative, vibrio-shaped, motile bacterium, designated strain AK4T, was isolated from a sediment sample collected from a solar saltern at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India. Strain AK4T was positive for oxidase, urease and DNase activities but negative for gelatinase, catalase, ornithine decarboxylase, lysine decarboxylase, nitrate reduction, aesculin, indole and lipase activities. The fatty acids were dominated by unsaturated components, with a high abundance of summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c) and C17 : 1ω6c. Strain AK4T contained Q-10 as the major respiratory quinone and phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine as major polar lipids. The DNA G+C content of strain AK4T was 71.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain AK4T was most closely related to the type strain of Caenispirillum bisanense of the family Rhodospirillaceae (phylum ‘ Proteobacteria ’) (96.6 % sequence similarity). It shared <93.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with other members of the family. Based on phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic inference, strain AK4T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Caenispirillum , for which the name Caenispirillum salinarum sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is AK4T ( = MTCC 10963T = JCM 17360T).

A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-flagellated, non-gliding, oxidase- and catalase-positive, yellow-pigmented rod, designated A11T, was isolated from a marine sponge, Halichondria oshoro, collected on the coastline of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain A11T was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae . Its closest relatives were members of the genera Muricauda , Flagellimonas and Croceitalea (94.4–94.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The only polar lipid detected in strain A11T was phosphatidylethanolamine. The dominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (30.4 %), iso-C15 : 1 G (26.7 %), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (12.4 %) and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH (7.3 %). The DNA G+C content of strain A11T was 41.7 mol% and its major respiratory quinone was MK-6. On the basis of combined data from phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses, strain A11T represents a novel genus and species within the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Spongiibacterium flavum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is A11T ( = KCTC 22665T = DSM 22638T). Emended descriptions of the genera Croceitalea and Flagellimonas are also given.

A strictly aerobic, Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, yellow-pigmented bacterial strain, designated BX12T, was isolated from soil collected from the peak area of Wudang Mountain in the city of Shiyan, Hubei province, China. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BX12T was most closely related to Flavobacterium subsaxonicum WB 4.1-42T (95.9 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity), followed by Flavobacterium beibuense F44-8T (95.6 %) and Flavobacterium rivuli WB 3.3-2T (94.1 %). The major fatty acids (≥5 %) of strain BX12T were summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c), iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, and C16 : 0 3-OH. The major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine, and the major respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6. The genomic DNA G+C content was 43.9 mol%. On the basis of a high number of phenotypic differentiating properties and phylogenetic uniqueness, strain BX12T represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium for which the name Flavobacterium hauense sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BX12T ( = CCTCC AB 2012197T = KCTC 32147T). Emended descriptions of Flavobacterium subsaxonicum , Flavobacterium beibuense and Flavobacterium rivuli are also proposed.

A novel acidobacterial strain, Sakura1T, was isolated from pieces of cherry bark. Cells of strain Sakura1T were non-motile, rod-shaped and stained Gram-negative. This strictly aerobic isolate was mesophilic but was able to grow at temperatures as low as 10 °C. Colonies were pink due to production of carotenoids, and its pigmentation was more pronounced in cells grown at lower temperature. This strain had endoglucanase activity. The main respiratory quinone was menaquinone-8, and major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c and C16 : 0. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the strain was closely related to species of the genus Granulicella in subdivision 1 of the phylum Acidobacteria . The closest relative was Granulicella paludicola OB1010T (97.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). While common characteristics were found among the isolate and species of the genus Granulicella, there were obvious differences between them such as their cell morphology, cellulolytic activity, and tolerance to low temperature and NaCl concentration. Based on phylogenetic and phenotypic findings, a novel species is proposed in the genus Granulicella with the name Granulicella cerasi sp. nov. The type strain is Sakura1T ( = NBRC 107139T = DSM 23641T).

Two Gram-stain-negative, yellow-pigmented and strictly aerobic bacteria, designated strains SE-s27T and SE-s28T, were isolated from forest soil. Both strains were non-motile rods that were catalase-positive and oxidase-negative and grew optimally at 25–30 °C, pH 8.0 and with 0 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain SE-s28T produced flexirubin-type pigments, but strain SE-s27T did not produce them. Both strains contained menaquinone-6 as the sole respiratory quinone and phosphatidylethanolamine as a major polar lipid. As the major cellular fatty acids (>10 %), SE-s27T contained iso-C15 : 1 and iso-C15 : 1G, whereas SE-s28T contained iso-C15 : 0 and summed feature 3 comprising C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH. The DNA G+C contents of strains SE-s27T and SE-s28T were 33.1 and 44.3 mol%, respectively. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that SE-s27T and SE-s28T formed respective distinct phylogenetic lineages within the genus Flavobacterium . Strains SE-s27T and SE-s28T were most closely related to Flavobacterium macrobrachii an-8T and Flavobacterium piscinae ICH-30T with 98.0 and 94.5 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, respectively. In conclusion, strains SE-s27T and SE-s28T represent novel species of the genus Flavobacterium , for which the names Flavobacterium solisilvae sp. nov. and Flavobacterium silvaticum sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains of F. solisilvae and F. silvaticum are SE-s27T (=KACC 18802T=JCM 31544T) and SE-s28T (=KACC 18803T=JCM 31545T), respectively.

A Gram-staining-negative, non-flagellated, non-gliding and pleomorphic bacterial strain, designated DPG-25T, was isolated from seawater in a seaweed farm in the South Sea in Korea and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DPG-25T grew optimally at 25 °C, at pH 7.0–7.5 and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. Flexirubin-type pigments were not produced. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DPG-25T formed a cluster with the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and Lutimonas vermicola . Strain DPG-25T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 95.3, 93.1 and 93.6 % to the type strains of Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola , respectively. Strain DPG-25T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids detected in strain DPG-25T were phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content was 39.9 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties and the phylogenetic distinctiveness of strain DPG-25T demonstrated that this strain is distinguishable from Actibacter sediminis , Aestuariicola saemankumensis and L. vermicola . On the basis of the data presented here, strain DPG-25T represents a novel species in a novel genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Namhaeicola litoreus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Namhaeicola litoreus is DPG-25T ( = KCTC 23702T  = CCUG 61485T).
