Strain KIT 00200-70066-1T was isolated from the sputum of a patient with pulmonary disease. Cells of the strain were Gram-variable, facultatively anaerobic, motile, spore-forming rods and formed colourless to white colonies on tryptic soy agar at 30 °C and pH 7. The pathogenicity of the strain is not known. The strain contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and several unknown lipids in the polar lipid profile. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate belongs to the genus Paenibacillus, sharing the highest levels of sequence similarity with Paenibacillus nanensis MX2-3T, Paenibacillus agaridevorans DSM 1355T and Paenibacillus alkaliterrae KSL-134T (95.4, 95.2 and 94.8 %, respectively), and that it occupied a distinct position within this genus. Combined phylogenetic and phenotypic data supported the conclusion that strain KIT 00200-70066-1T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus sputi sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is KIT 00200-70066-1T (=KCTC 13252T =DSM 22699T).

A novel actinobacterium, designated strain C4-31T, was isolated from soil collected from a cave. Cells were aerobic, Gram-reaction-positive, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and non-motile cocci. Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism occupied a distinct phylogenetic position within the suborder Frankineae, with sequence similarity values of less than 93.2 % to members of this suborder. The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside, an unknown aminophospholipid and an unknown phospholipid. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω6c and C16 : 0. The G+C content of the DNA was 62.8 mol%. On the basis of morphological and chemotaxonomic data as well as phylogenetic evidence, strain C4-31T ( = KCTC 39556T = DSM 100065T) is considered to represent the type strain of a novel species of a new genus in the suborder Frankineae, for which the name Antricoccus suffuscus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed.

A Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, short-rod-shaped, non-motile and non-spore-forming bacterial strain, designated ABP-4T, was isolated from a freshwater spring in Taiwan and was characterized using the polyphasic taxonomy approach. Growth occurred at 20–40 °C (optimum, 30–37 °C), at pH 7.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 7.0–9.0) and with 0–3 % NaCl (optimum, 0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ABP-4T, together with Aquabacterium fontiphilum CS-6T (96.4 % sequence similarity), Aquabacterium commune B8T (96.1 %), Aquabacterium citratiphilum B4T (95.5 %) and Aquabacterium parvum B6T (94.7 %), formed a deep line within the order Burkholderiales. Strain ABP-4T contained summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c), C18 : 1 ω7c and C16 : 0 as predominant fatty acids. The major cellular hydroxy fatty acid was C10 : 0 3-OH. The major isoprenoid quinone was Q-8 and the DNA G+C content was 68.6 mol%. The polar lipid profile consisted of a mixture of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylserine, diphosphatidylglycerol and several uncharacterized phospholipids. The DNA–DNA relatedness of strain ABP-4T with respect to recognized species of the genus Aquabacterium was less than 70 %. On the basis of the genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data, strain ABP-4T represents a novel species in the genus Aquabacterium, for which the name Aquabacterium limnoticum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ABP-4T ( = BCRC 80167T = KCTC 23306T).

A novel actinomycete strain, designated CS5-AC15T, was isolated from a soil sample collected from a cliff on Mara Island, Jeju, Republic of Korea, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic analysis. The isolate produced well-developed, yellow substrate mycelium and white aerial mycelium that differentiated into straight or flexuous chains of smooth-surfaced spores. 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that the organism belonged to the family Thermomonosporaceae and formed a tight cluster with the type strain of Actinomadura oligospora (97.4 % sequence similarity). Chemotaxonomic characteristics were consistent with its assignment to the genus Actinomadura in that the isolate had meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell wall, madurose as the characteristic sugar, N-acetyl type of murein in the peptidoglycan, MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8) as major menaquinones and a polar lipid profile containing diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and unknown phospholipids. Mycolic acids were not detected. The predominant fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c and iso-C16 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 70.9 mol%. DNA relatedness of strain CS5-AC15T and A. oligospora JCM 10648T was 37.9±0.7 %. On the basis of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA–DNA hybridization data, strain CS5-AC15T is assigned to a novel species of the genus Actinomadura, for which the name Actinomadura rupiterrae sp. nov. is proposed (type strain CS5-AC15T  = KCTC 19559T  = DSM 45251T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain OU-40T, was isolated from farm soil collected from the Hyderabad region of Andhra Pradesh, southern India. The strain was found to have morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics typical of species of the genus Streptomyces. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain OU-40T belonged to the genus Streptomyces, and was related most closely to Streptomyces pactum NBRC 13433T (99.0 % sequence similarity), Streptomyces olivaceus NBRC 12805T (99.0 %) and Streptomyces parvulus NBRC 13193T (98.8 %). Strain OU-40T could be distinguished from the type strains of its closest phylogenetic relatives based on levels of DNA–DNA relatedness and comparison of morphological and phenotypic data. It is therefore concluded that strain OU-40T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces hyderabadensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is OU-40T (=CCTCC AA 209024T =PCM 2692T).

Two xylan-degrading bacteria, strains MX15-2T and MX21-2T, were isolated from soils collected in Nan province, Thailand. Cells were Gram-reaction-positive, facultatively anaerobic, spore-forming and rod-shaped. They contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The major menaquinone was MK-7. iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0 were the predominant cellular fatty acids. Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and lysyl-phosphatidylglycerol were the major polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains MX15-2T and MX21-2T were 63.0 and 65.1 mol%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains MX15-2T and MX21-2T were affiliated with the genus Cohnella and were closely related to Cohnella thermotolerans CCUG 47242T, with 96.5 and 95.6 % sequence similarity, respectively. The strains could be clearly distinguished from each other and from all known species of the genus Cohnella based on their physiological and biochemical characteristics as well as their phylogenetic positions and levels of DNA–DNA hybridization. Therefore, these two strains represent novel species of the genus Cohnella, for which the names Cohnella xylanilytica sp. nov. (type strain MX15-2T =KCTC 22294T =PCU 309T =TISTR 1891T) and Cohnella terrae sp. nov. (type strain MX21-2T =KCTC 22295T =PCU 310T =TISTR 1892T) are proposed.

A novel strain of the genus Paenibacillus, KFC91T, was isolated from the Kafni glacier of the Himalayas. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KFC91T clustered with Paenibacillus antarcticus LMG 22078T (98.9 %) and Paenibacillus macquariensis LMG 6935T (98.7 %). The cell wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid, anteiso-C15 : 0 as the predominant fatty acid and MK-7 as the major isoprenoid quinone. Based on the phylogenetic analysis, chemotaxonomic characteristics and other phenotypic traits, strain KFC91T was assigned to the genus Paenibacillus. DNA–DNA hybridization experiments of KFC91T with P. antarcticus and P. macquariensis showed reassociation values of 39 and 52 %, respectively. Thus, it is proposed that strain KFC91T should be assigned the status of a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus and the name proposed is Paenibacillus glacialis sp. nov., with KFC91T (=NCCB 100252T =DSM 22343T) as the type strain.

A yellow-coloured, marine actinobacterium, designated SST-45T, was isolated from sandy sediment under the surface of a beach and taxonomically characterized by physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic methods. The cells of the isolate were Gram-positive, aerobic, non-sporulating, non-motile, spherical cells that occurred singly, in pairs, in clusters or as short chains. The isolate grew at 10–37 °C, an initial pH 5.1–12.1 and in the presence of 5 % (w/v) NaCl. The organism possessed ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid in the cell wall, MK-8(H4) as the major menaquinone, a polar lipid profile including diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and an unknown phospholipid, C18 : 1 and C16 : 0 as the major fatty acids, and a DNA G+C content of 72.4 mol%. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the organism was related to members of the genera Marmoricola and Nocardioides. The closest neighbours were Marmoricola aurantiacus DSM 12652T (97.0 % sequence similarity) and Nocardioides jensenii KCTC 9134T (96.7 %). The combination of morphological and chemotaxonomic characters supported the assignment of the isolate to the genus Marmoricola. However, the organism is clearly distinguished phenotypically from the single described species of this genus, Marmoricola aurantiacus. Based on the data obtained, the organism has been assigned as a novel species, for which the name Marmoricola aequoreus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is strain SST-45T (=JCM 13812T=NRRL B-24464T).

A bacterial strain designated 11N27T was isolated from an agricultural soil sample. Cells of this strain were Gram-reaction-variable, facultatively anaerobic, endospore-forming, white-pigmented, peritrichously flagellated and hydrolysed xanthine. The major fatty acids of strain 11N27T were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and C16 : 0. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two unknown phospholipids, two unknown aminolipids, one unknown aminophospholipid and two unknown polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain 11N27T was 50.3 mol%. MK-7 was the predominant respiratory quinone. meso-Diaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic diamino acid in the peptidoglycan. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain 11N27T was phylogenetically related to Paenibacillus mendelii C/2T (96.2  % sequence similarity) and Paenibacillus sepulcri CMM 7311T (96.0  %). The genotypic and phenotypic data showed that strain 11N27T could be distinguished from phylogenetically related species and that this strain represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus. The name Paenibacillus xanthinilyticus sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain 11N27T( = KACC 17935T = NBRC 109108T).

Bacterial strain TM-1T was isolated from the gut of a wood-feeding termite, Reticulitermes chinensis Snyder. Cells of strain TM-1T were Gram-negative, spherical (1.0–2.0 µm in diameter), non-motile, non-sporulating and red-pigmented. Strain TM-1T was resistant to UV radiation, showing 34 % survival after exposure to UV light at a dose of 100 J m−2. Growth occurred at 20–40 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum, pH 6.0–7.0), and in the presence of 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0–0.4 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain TM-1T was related to members of the genus Deinococcus, with sequence similarities ranging from 87.0 to 94.0 %. The peptidoglycan of strain TM-1T contained ornithine, alanine, glycine and glutamic acid. The most abundant cellular fatty acids of strain TM-1T were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c; 22.3 %) and C16 : 0 (37.5 %). MK-8 was the predominant quinone. The polar lipid profile contained three glycophospholipids, six glycolipids, one aminolipid and three unknown lipids. DNA of the type strain had a G+C content of 65.6 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data presented, strain TM-1T represents a novel species of the genus Deinococcus, for which the name Deinococcus reticulitermitis sp. nov. is proposed, with TM-1T ( = CGMCC 1.10218T = NBRC 106334T) as the type strain.

Abstract A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile actinobacterium, designated strain YIM 93776T, was isolated from a saline sediment sample collected from Aiding Lake in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Northwest China. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain YIM 93776T was affiliated to the genus Glycomyces, and was closely related to Glycomyces albus TRM 49136T (97.6 % sequence similarity), Glycomyces lacisalsi XHU 5089T (97.0 %) and Glycomyces anabasis EGI 6500139T (96.2 %). The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid and the whole-cell hydrolysates sugars were galactose, mannose, arabinase, glucose and ribose. The predominant menaquinones were MK-9 (H4) and MK-10 (H4). Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, two phosphatidylglyceride, two unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified polar lipids were detected in the polar lipid extracts. Major fatty acids were anteiso-C17:0, iso-C15:0, iso-C16:0, anteiso-C15:0 and anteiso C17:1 A. The draft genome sequence of strain YIM 93776T was 5.37 Mbp in size with 69.5 mol% DNA G+C content. On the basis of morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidence, strain YIM 93776T therefore represents a novel species, for which the name Glycomyces salinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 93776T (= KCTC 49430T = CGMCC 4.7685T).
