A novel Gram-stain-positive, slightly halophilic, facultatively alkaliphilic, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, endospore-forming, motile, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated strain JSM 082006T, was isolated from an oyster collected from Naozhou Island in the South China Sea. The isolate grew in 0–18 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0.5–4.0 %), at pH 6.0–10.5 (optimum, pH 8.0) and at 15–45 °C (optimum, 30 °C). meso-Diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and C16 : 0. Strain JSM 082006T contained MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine as the major polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 40.2 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain JSM 082006T should be assigned to the genus Bacillus and that it was most closely related to the type strains of Bacillus barbaricus (sequence similarity 99.1 %) and Bacillus arsenicus (97.5 %), followed by those of Bacillus rigui (96.6 %) and Bacillus solisalsi (96.1 %). Phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA relatedness values, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic data support the view that strain JSM 082006T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus nanhaiensis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is JSM 082006T ( = DSM 23009T  = KCTC 13712T).

Strain BZ30T was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. The Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium was psychrophilic and able to grow at temperatures ranging from 1 to 30 °C. The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain BZ30T were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) (37.4 %), C18 : 1 ω7c (19.6 %), C16 : 0 (8.2 %), C14 : 0 2-OH (8.0 %) and C16 : 0 2-OH (5.0 %). The predominant ubiquinone was Q-10. Major polar lipids were sphingoglycolipids, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. Spermidine was the major polyamine. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that strain BZ30T belonged to the family Sphingomonadaceae of the α-4 group of the phylum Proteobacteria, and was related to the members of the genus Sphingopyxis, sharing the highest sequence similarities with the type strains of Sphingopyxis chilensis (98.3 %), S. witflariensis (98.2 %), S. taejonensis (97.4 %) and S. ginsengisoli (97.2 %). On the basis of the phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA relatedness data, strain BZ30T represents a novel species of the genus Sphingopyxis, for which the name Sphingopyxis bauzanensis is proposed. The type strain is BZ30T (=DSM 22271T =CGMCC 1.8959T =CIP 110136T).

The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. Strain JSM 081004T contained MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone, and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain JSM 081004T was 40.1 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain JSM 081004T should be assigned to the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to the type strains of Bacillus lehensis (sequence similarity 97.8 %), Bacillus oshimensis (97.8 %) and Bacillus patagoniensis (97.3 %). Phylogenetic analysis, DNA–DNA relatedness values, phenotypic characteristics and chemotaxonomic data all support the proposal of strain JSM 081004T as a representative of a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus xiaoxiensis sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is JSM 081004T ( = CCTCC AA 208057T  = DSM 21943T).

A Gram-stain-variable, rod-shaped, non-motile and endospore-forming bacterium, designated strain HZ1T, was isolated from a sample of bank side soil from Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province, PR China. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain HZ1T was closely related to members of the genus Paenibacillus, sharing the highest levels of sequence similarity with Paenibacillus agarexedens DSM 1327T (94.4 %), Paenibacillus sputi KIT00200-70066-1T (94.4 %). Growth occurred at 15–42 °C (optimum 30–37 °C), pH 5.0–9.5 (optimum pH 7.0–8.0) and NaCl concentrations of up to 6.0 % (w/v) were tolerated (optimum 0.5 %). The dominant respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the DNA G+C content was 40.1 mol%. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The major polar lipids of strain HZ1T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and several unknown lipids. The diagnostic diamino acid found in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Based on its phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic data, strain HZ1T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus ripae sp. nov. (type strain HZ1T = CCTCC AB 2014276T = LMG 28639T) is proposed.

Two novel Gram-stain-positive bacteria, designated HR08-7T and HR08-43T, were isolated from a sea sediment sample from Rishiri Island, Hokkaido, Japan, and their taxonomic positions were investigated by a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T and the members of the genus Demequina formed a monophyletic cluster with similarity range of 95.5–99.0 %. The peptidoglycan type of strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T was A4β. The predominant menaquinone of both strains was demethylmenaquinone DMK-9(H4) and the major fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C contents of strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T were 64.5 and 62.4 mol%, respectively. The results of phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization, along with differences of strains HR08-7T and HR08-43T from the recognized Demequina species in phenotypic characteristics, indicate that the two strains merit classification as representatives of two novel species of the genus Demequina , for which the names Demequina flava sp. nov. and Demequina sediminicola sp. nov. are proposed; the type strains are HR08-7T ( = NBRC 105854T = DSM 24865T) and HR08-43T ( = NBRC 105855T = DSM 24867T), respectively.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, motile bacterium, designated strain AK21T, was isolated from coastal surface sea water at Visakhapatnam, India. The strain was positive for oxidase, catalase, lipase, l-proline arylamidase and tyrosine arylamidase activities. The predominant fatty acids were C12:0, C12:0 3-OH, C16:0, C16:1ω9c, C18:1ω9c and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c and/or iso-C15:0 2-OH). The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified aminophospholipid, two unidentified phospholipids and one unidentified lipid. Q-10 was the predominant respiratory quinone. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 54.6 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain AK21T was a member of the genus Marinobacter and was closely related to Marinobacter xestospongiae, with pairwise sequence similarity of 97.2 % to the type strain, with similarity to other members of the genus of 94.0–96.8 %. The mean DNA–DNA relatedness of strain AK21T with M. xestospongiae JCM 17469T was 34.5 %, and relatedness with Marinobacter mobilis JCM 15154T was 40.5 %. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain AK21T clustered with the type strains of M. xestospongiae and M. mobilis at distances of 2.9 and 2.8 % (97.1 and 97.2 % similarity), respectively. Based on the phenotypic characteristics and on phylogenetic inference, it appears that strain AK21T represents a novel species of the genus Marinobacter, for which the name Marinobacter nitratireducens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Marinobacter nitratireducens is AK21T ( = MTCC 11704T = JCM 18428T).

A novel actinomycete, designated strain VN05A0561T, was isolated from plant litter collected at Ba Be National Park, Vietnam. The substrate mycelia and spore chains fragmented in a manner similar to nocardioform actinomycetes; the spores had smooth surfaces and were rod-shaped. Strain VN05A0561T had the following chemotaxonomic characteristics: meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan, arabinose and galactose as characteristic sugars, MK-8(H4) as the major isoprenoid quinone, phosphatidylcholine as the diagnostic phospholipid and iso-C16 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acid. Strain VN05A0561T shared low levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (<97 %) with the type strains of recognized species of the genus Pseudonocardia and could be differentiated from its closest phylogenetic relatives based on phenotypic characteristics. These results suggested that strain VN05A0561T represents a novel species of the genus Pseudonocardia, for which the name Pseudonocardia babensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is VN05A0561T (=VTCC-A-1757T=NBRC 105793T).

Three novel Gram-stain-positive bacteria, designated IY07-20T, IY07-56T and IY07-113, were isolated from soil samples from Iriomote Island, Okinawa, Japan, and their taxonomic positions were investigated by a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that the three isolates were closely related to the members of the genus Agromyces , with similarity range of 95.6–98.7 %. The isolates contained l-2,4-diaminobutylic acid, d-alanine, d-glutamic acid and glycine in their peptidoglycans. The predominant menaquinone was MK-12 and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The DNA G+C contents were 70.9–72.9 mol%. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of the isolates matched those described for members of the genus Agromyces . The results of phylogenetic analysis and DNA–DNA hybridization, along with differences in phenotypic characteristics between strains IY07-20T, IY07-56T and IY07-113 and the species of the genus Agromyces with validly published names, indicate that the three isolates merit classification as representatives of two novel species of the genus Agromyces , for which the names Agromyces iriomotensis sp. nov. and Agromyces subtropica sp. nov. are proposed; the type strains are IY07-20T ( = NBRC 106452T = DSM 26155T) and IY07-56T ( = NBRC 106454T = DSM 26153T), respectively.

A novel Gram-stain-positive, motile, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated YIM 93174T, was isolated from a salt field in Korea. Cells of this strain were rod-shaped and formed pale tangerine colonies and grew at pH 6.0–8.0 (optimal growth at pH 7.0), at 15–45 °C (optimum 28–37 °C) and at salinities of 0–10 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0–2 % NaCl). Some phenotypic characters allowed differentiation of strain YIM 93174T from its nearest phylogenetic relatives. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain YIM 93174T belongs to the genus Bacillus, exhibiting the highest level of sequence similarity with the type strain of Bacillus humi (95.7 %), followed by those of Bacillus alkalitelluris (94.9 %) and Bacillus litoralis (94.5 %). The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of the A1γ type, containing meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 36.9 mol% and the predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. The major polar lipids of strain YIM 93174T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannoside and two unknown phospholipids. On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, strain YIM 93174T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus luteolus sp. nov. is proposed, with YIM 93174T ( = DSM 22388T  = KCTC 13210T  = CCTCC AA 208068T) as the type strain.

A Gram-positive, rod- or coccoid-shaped bacterial strain, DS-17T, was isolated from a soil in Dokdo, Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain DS-17T grew optimally at around pH 8.0 and 30 °C in the presence of 0.5–1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain DS-17T belonged to the genus Nocardioides. The chemotaxonomic properties of strain DS-17T were consistent with those of the genus Nocardioides: the cell-wall peptidoglycan type was based on ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid, MK-8(H4) was the predominant menaquinone and iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1 ω8c and C17 : 0 were the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content was 71.5 mol%. Strain DS-17T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 94.5–96.9 % to the type strains of recognized Nocardioides species. Strain DS-17T could be distinguished from recognized Nocardioides species by differences in phenotypic characteristics. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain DS-17T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DS-17T (=KCTC 19217T=JCM 14582T).

A Gram-reaction-positive, facultatively anaerobic, motile, endospore-forming, rod-shaped strain, designated SgZ-7T, was isolated from a windrow compost pile and was characterized by means of a polyphasic approach. Growth occurred with 0–3 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1 %), at pH 6.0–10.0 (optimum pH 7.2) and at 40–60 °C (optimum 50 °C). The main respiratory quinone was MK-7. The predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 46.6 mol%. The phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed that strain SgZ-7T should be assigned to the genus Bacillus and was related most closely to Bacillus drentensis LMG 21831T (sequence similarity 97.2 %). The result of the DNA–DNA hybridization experiment revealed a low relatedness (27.2 %) between the isolate and B. drentensis LMG 21831T. The results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic analyses clearly indicated that strain SgZ-7T represents a novel species, for which the name Bacillus thermocopriae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SgZ-7T ( = CCTCC AB 2012030T = KACC 16700T).
