Three seamoth specimens (45.5–56.9 mm standard length; SL) (Syngnathiformes: Pegasidae), originally identified as Pegasus laternarius Cuvier, 1829, but now recognized as representing P. nanhaiensis Zhang, Wang et Lin, 2020, a species recently described from the northern South China Sea off Yangjiang and Beihai, China, were obtained at a local fish market in Maha Chai, Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand on 6 July 2012, having been caught in the northern Gulf of Thailand. In addition, single specimens, reported as P. laternarius or Spinipegasus laternarius from Bidong Island, South China Sea off the Malay Peninsula (46.1 mm SL) and from Ko Kradat, Trat Province, eastern Gulf of Thailand (66.1 mm SL), were re-identified here as P. nanhaiensis. Thai specimens and Malaysian record represent the first records of P. nanhaiensis from Thailand and Malaysia, respectively, and from outside Chinese coastal waters. Additionally, the Bidong specimen is the southernmost record for the species. The fresh coloration of P. nanhaiensis is described for the first time.

The use of a multi-functional autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) as a platform for making turbulence measurements in the ocean is developed. The layout optimization of the turbulence package and platform motion performance are limitation problems in turbulent AUV design. In this study, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method has been used to determine the optimized layout position and distance of the shear probe integrated into an AUV. When placed 0.8 D ahead of the AUV nose along the axis, the shear probe is not influenced by flow distortion and can contact the water body first. To analyze the motion of the turbulence AUV, the dynamic model of turbulence AUV for planar flight is obtained. Then, the mathematical equations of speed and angle of attack under steady-state motion have also been obtained. By calculating the hydrodynamic coefficients of the turbulence AUV and given system parameters, the simulation analysis has been conducted. The simulation results demonstrated that the speed of turbulent AUV is 0.5–1 m/s, and the maximum angle of attack is less than 6.5°, which meets the observation requirements of the shear probe. In addition, turbulence AUV conducted a series of sea-trials in the northern South China Sea to illustrate the validity of the design and measurement. Two continuous profiles (1000 m) with a horizontal distance of 10 km were completed, and numerous high-quality spatiotemporal turbulence data were obtained. These profiles demonstrate the superior flight performance of turbulence AUV. Analysis shows that the measured data are of high quality, with the shear spectra being in very good agreement with the Nasmyth spectrum. Dissipation rates are consistent with background shear. When shear velocity is weak, the measurement of dissipation rate is 10−10 W Kg−1. All indications are that the turbulence AUV is suitable for long-term, contiguous ocean microstructure measurements, which will provide data needed to understand the temporal and spatial variability of the turbulent processes in the oceans.

The Dongsha Island (DS) is located in the mid-northern South China Sea continental margin. The waters around it are underlain by the Chaoshan Depression, a relict Mesozoic sedimentary basin, blanketed by thin Cenozoic sediments but populated with numerous submarine hills with yet less-known nature. A large hill, H110, 300 m high, 10 km wide, appearing in the southeast to the Dongsha Island, is crossed by an ocean bottom seismic and multiple channel seismic surveying lines. The first arrival tomography, using ocean bottom seismic data, showed two obvious phenomena below it: (1) a low-velocity (3.3 to 4 km/s) zone, with size of 20 × 3 km2, centering at ~4.5 km depth and (2) an underlying high-velocity (5.5 to 6.3 km/s) zone of comparable size at ~7 km depth. MCS profiles show much-fragmented Cenozoic sequences, covering a wide chaotic reflection zone within the Mesozoic strata below hill H110. The low-velocity zone corresponds to the chaotic reflection zone and can be interpreted as of highly-fractured and fluid-rich Mesozoic layers. Samples dredged from H110 comprised of illite-bearing authigenic carbonate nodules and rich, deep-water organisms are indicative of hydrocarbon seepage from deep source. Therefore, H110 can be inferred as a mud volcano. The high-velocity zone is interpreted as of magma intrusion, considering that young magmatism was found enhanced over the southern CSD. Furthermore, the origin of H110 can be speculated as thermodynamically driven, i.e., magma from the depths intrudes into the thick Mesozoic strata and promotes petroleum generation, thus, driving mud volcanism. Mud volcanism at H110 and the occurrence of a low-velocity zone below it likely indicates the existence of Mesozoic hydrocarbon reservoir, which is in favor of the petroleum exploration.
